1k Music

Hi guys,
as some of you know, my HD is broken and the datas are not recoverable atm. While scanning some of my older DVDs i found an OLD test project, where i tried to found a nice way to include a nice and long tune into some bytes, to add to a 1KB intro one day.

The exe ist not crinkler packed and was coded with PB, based on API only, so the file is a bit more as 1k. The exe will possible only work on "Windows XP", due fact of a small amazing trick i tried and found out.

Its to sad, i am not introduced into 1k DX coding (generall C/CPP coding), else i would like to release a very simple 1k DX Intro with a new atomosphere tune for BP2008... The fx itself is just based on two loops (5 lines of code). Possible i would try to add the "faked" tune to the intro and seeing the amazing eyes/sceners

OK I just listened again and no way. Its impossible to generate this which means you must be playing back a stored tune- some example that comes with XP. I remember a 4k that did this once, but I never did find out the location of the music.

OK now I found it - winxp out of the box experience music.

:-) ooo that would be risky :-) you'd either kill or be killed. I'm not sure what the loops are for or what "fx" you are using.

I coded it up and its 50 bytes when crinklered in C. Va!n if you want to see a 1k with it , say so and I'll send it to you. I wont post it though incase you will go ahead and use this technique. If you decide not to, say so and I'll post the 1k here (though I wont launch it at Pouet or anywhere because I think people would kill me for it).

It's a very very cheeky way to get sound into 1kb...

Personally I do not see a different in playing
a winxp wav instead of playing 3 different
midi notes. So, this would be fine with me...

Nevertheless, the fact that this works on XP
only is a KO-criterium in my eyes.

yes, sure its a faked way i am playing the tune *grin*
but i liked the idea and esp the possible "Oha, wtf" effect when ppl see/hear it the first time

to sad M$ removed the wave from vista package... else i think this would be a nice suprise in a 1k production.  But hey, there are not only waves with the windows package... their are still some midis with each each windows you could try to add/play in your 1k prod

wenn ich mit C++ ein 1k DX erstellen könnte, dann hätte ich schon längst einen 5 zeiler (einfachen) effect gecoded und im hintergrund das wave abgespielt und released. Zu schade, dass ich mich mit C++ noch nicht so auskenne bzw mit VC-Studio nicht zurecht komme

For those who can't speak German, a rough translation of what vain said below;

If I could make a 1k DX framework with C++, then I would have already had a simple effect coded with the wave playing in the background and released it.

Too bad that I do not know how to do this in C++ / visual C studio.

This hack has been used before, the last one which use it was Rose Shank by xzm & tAAt

But it would be very interesting to see what people will say about it in 1kb

huh... and using those .wav:s doesn't count as using someone elses tune without permission? visuals aren't too impressive either imho, but thumbdown for the sound.

Thats a risky point too. Potentially you could be banned for using a 3rd party tune without permission. Looking at roseshank though, they got away with it...so, could be worth a try. I just think it would be so much more obvious at 1k. Ah well one way to find out...

It was interesting to read the comments about this on Pouet, some of them surprised me but you have succesfully split opinion with this Well done.

I feel very happy when respectable sceners get annoyed by a less known coder who finds and uses an exploit like this. Also amazingly there were people who really thought that it was a synth ffs!

Hahahaha.

And the effect was accepted in the comp too Well done again.

If it had a better effect on screen than that colour cycling pattern then it could have done better in the comp.
