Game Builders' Club Games
« on: December 10, 2008 »
Here is the first child-built Game Builders' Club game:

Jed In Space

Please have a go and tell me what you think. 5 more games are in the works. When they are all ready I'll open a poll to find the best game.

Jed in space is not bad, the graphics are erm... Loud.

Quite a good challenge though.
On my second gaame, something went wrong and the "car" fell through the scenery.

The graphics were some of the parts designed by the children.

Is the falling bug something you can do again? A screenshot could reveal something I've missed.

Whoops! Sorry if I offended the kids Tony :)

Up to my ears in baby debris atm, I'll try and get it to bug out again as soon as I can.

Thanks guys.

I've been working on 3 more:
Freaky Shooutout
Can you defeat the freaky alien zombies?

Shopping Rush
Life from the perspective of a lady - perhaps?

Jump!
The building is on fire - can you jump over the flames?

There's just 2 left to go...

I think it's great that you can write these flash games, what I don't like about them is the style of gameplay.

They look really rushed, the colour schemes are all garish and the control systems are not intuitive.

I'd really like to see what you could do with some better graphics (find some on the net!) and spending a proper amount of time on a game to make sure it's fun to play with no bugs..

I know you have the talent Tony, the tanks game I played was the most promising that I had seen, but even that had some bad bugs that needed fixing.

The YABASIC version of tanks had better AI and collision detection. When I get time I'll port the code over.

The kids only had 15 hours in total to complete their games, and some of them couldn't spell. I've made changes to some of the control systems over the requests of their designers where I felt it appropriate. Which is why they've come out looking so bad.

The point of it all was to show the kids what is involved in making a game - time, effort, and vision, all three of which were lacking in this case.

The club will probably run again - if I get some of the same teams back I'll let them create better graphics, sounds and control systems, but the people paying me to run it will probably want a new group of kids in, which will have the same results :(

Asteroid Dodger will be polished to near perfection if I ever get round to it.

(update)
Zombie Mania, the final game, was so complicated on paper I have had to abandon development in order to meet the deadline for getting the polls open.

(update 2)
Just hit the Play Again button on Jed In Space - there's something which isn't being re-initialised properly when the game restarts, which is causing the fall through.
