The Game Scene Charts (MAY)
« on: June 18, 2009 »
Hi, as promised, here is the link to the game scene charts.

I have not posted it directly on here as the contents are related to the games scene, I guess that the articles will probably not be of interest to many of you but I would love any feedback on the actual chart engine its self.

Thanks :)

Looks very nice indeed mate, there is a scroll bar bug in the iso / dox rules part 1.
I also think you could do with using a fatter font and more colour effects on the text in articles.

Wow ...  that creates true oldschool feelings. Very well done.
I could image that coding all those GUI stuff was a hell of a work.
Buttons, Scrollerbars etc ... awesome work.

Fantastic work done here. As usual the largest chunk of the workis not seen here, i.e. the tools to actually "compile" the articles and also the text parser. Congratulations and of course I just love the intro.

BTW, after I released a couple of C64 intros I noticed that a lot of text effects never really reached the Amiga or the PC. Especially for letter writers that were so popular on the C64. So I have a little wish list for the future, if possible of course:

1) apparently color can be changed for chunks of text.. what about having some moving rasters in them as well? that could be nice

2) I'd love a more old-school font for the articles. There are dozens that have the necessary ASCII symbols...

3) also it would be nice if some characters were animated like in those old-school C64 letter writers. Check also some old intros from Ikari, etc ... for example the "*" character is rotating..or the "!" is jumping... etc

4) don't stop coding this. I read the full charts last night and noticed that such productions are a bit lonely when people can simply use forums etc. Nevertheless, the experience you provide here is really great. A forum will never be so entertaining (graphics, music, effects, text)

Great work. Dunno how to K++ you, but you deserve it!

Shockwave is Widowmaker? muahahahaha!!!! Everyone knows your secret identity is Bruce Wayne and at night you jump from roof to roof dressed in a dark blue outfit. BTW, I'd appreciate if after your late adventures, you do not always ring at my door at 4am asking for a drink, which is just an excuse for you to start explaining me your sad life of a never-understood super hero! That sucks really. Get a serious dressing and come over this week-end for the BBQ. There will be nice girls and good fresh beers. I'll try to get you a serious job in the demo-making industry, I have some good contacts. Really! I know people who code nice message boxes using only a single Win32 API call and they make good money.

Yes I noticed that too, it is not a bug with the engine, it's just that the editor of the charts forgot to properly terminate that article with an "<end>" tag, this make the charts engine thinks that there is 5,000 lines inside the article, so it became possible to scroll past the end.

I also think you could do with using a fatter font and more colour effects on the text in articles.

When you say colour effects do you mean that there should be more colours or do you mean that there should be some effects on the texts? Please tell me, I am interested in improving them... As for the colours that gets used, this is a personal choice of the man who edits the articles, I provide the tool to colour the text, it is up to him how much colours he uses and where to use them.

Pointing at the fatter font, game ansiis are all 80 characters wide, all the groups nfo files follow that format and so does the charts, it would not be practical to make the font wider sorry, for the skins would need to be redrawn and it is hard to find a good reliable artist to draw them.

Really cool oldschool feel :)

Hehe, you are certainly correct, the hardest job was making the tools for the editor to compile and format this mag without needing to learn any programming.

Fantastic work done here. As usual the largest chunk of the workis not seen here, i.e. the tools to actually "compile" the articles and also the text parser. Congratulations and of course I just love the intro.

You are damned right Stormbringer, these tools was the most work of all. The front end is easy by comparison.

1) apparently color can be changed for chunks of text.. what about having some moving rasters in them as well? that could be nice

Each and every letter may have its own colour and format, I will look into this :)

2) I'd love a more old-school font for the articles. There are dozens that have the necessary ASCII symbols...

I guess that it is easy to add more fonts :) I will look at that one.

3) also it would be nice if some characters were animated like in those old-school C64 letter writers. Check also some old intros from Ikari, etc ... for example the "*" character is rotating..or the "!" is jumping... etc

Yes, this is cool, it may screw with the ansii logos, but maybe I can have some special characters that the editor can drop in here and there to make it more interesting.

4) don't stop coding this. I read the full charts last night and noticed that such productions are a bit lonely when people can simply use forums etc. Nevertheless, the experience you provide here is really great. A forum will never be so entertaining (graphics, music, effects, text)

I am sure that you would give a very interesting interview if you wanted to contribute one? ;)

Great work. Dunno how to K++ you, but you deserve it!

You deserve the karmas for your remakes.

@Widowmaker: an interview?? wooooaw I feel famous now. Why not if I can bring something to the charts, I'd be happy to say something.

on a complete different subject, I really like how ridiculous it is to use these nicknames, handles and pseudos. Yeah! We're all frustrated super heros... sort of digital version of the Watchmen. I sent some pictures of some copy parties to a girl friend today. She always wanted to know what the super-geek-heros look like. She laughed so much!!! She asked me if it was true that the real scene legends looked like retarded schoolboys. I was so embarrassed when I answered yes and said that one of them on the picture was me :D

I feel "normal" these days hehe. But back then we were in the late 80's hehe, different story. If you go to Facebook and check the pictures on the group Alcatraz, you'll notice that Hardrider was a huge fan of The Cure and back then he had a funny Rober Smith-like hair cut. Now he looks like a sexy playboy and successful nightclubber :D :D :D

BTW, just saw a picture of Omega Supreme / The Shadows (C64). So funny... he barely was a teenager and I'm quite sure he did not play the smart ass in the school yard... but when you read his scrolltexts, he was so arrogant for his age,.. anyway, I really like how the scene was back then... meaningless but so beautiful and coloured ;)

the mighty Bringer of Storms, covered a bit more on my colour question. Some more copper colours would be pretty cool, if it doesnt distract the reader.

With regards to a fatter font, I dont mean a wider width in the sense of the individual size, I meant something of filling out the letters, eg where you have 1 pixel make it 2 pixels; but if it's a true type font then that wont work. As you've stated the font used is prefered / default one used by many and for many a year.

bit off topic, for those that can remember early DBF, I was once accussed of being Parabellum. And Im buggered if I can remember exact details, I can just remember the moment! :D
