Simple fire effect...
« on: October 15, 2009 »

Here is a little effect I thought I'd share. It is just some simple particles using lightblend mode in bmax to produce some interesting fire. I was asked to figure out the old demoscene fire effect and this is about the closest I could get...

Looks nice

You can also try some pixel buffer effect, check out this tutorial by Hugo Elias.

I would like to do this fluid fire someday :)

Just like the classic water effect, this effect is really just an animated blur filter. Theres probably alot of effects that are based on a blur filter.

That's a nice effect, Pixel_Outlaw.
You could add a bit of sine to the x-coordinates to simulate some sort of heat haze.

Looks great PO.

I just finished a fire effect for the c64 last night.  Its part of a demo due at the end of the month so I can't show you right now.  If I remember I'll post it here when the party is finito.

Great fire effect you got there, and also nice to see such clean code too.

If you want to do it pixel-wise, the Hugo-Elias link posted above explains it in a very straight-forward way :) I even did this flowfire technique in Blitz Basic myself, it was fast enough to run at only 320 * 240 in Blitz.. Bmax may well do a better job.

Your version gives a similar kind of effect actually and I really like it a lot. It does look quite like fire with little sparks drifting upwards.

Thanks for the tips!

I like to sometimes try to reinvent the wheel before looking at the answers. Just getting a feel for blending modes right now. I really wonder how the stencil mode is for bmax?
