This one is especially for shocky - one of his fav oldschool prods.

It's not one of my favourite prods at all! It is my all time favourite prod.
Some time ago, after begging Stormbringer to remake this one, he told me that he had started on this remake, he even sent me some previews and when RR went to remake number 500 the plan was to release this intro.

Sadly that didn't happen and I honestly thought that I would need to wait until remake 1,000 to see it.

But anyway, this intro was the very first thing I ever saw on an Amiga... At that time I had a Sinclair Spectrum. Believe it or not I had sold my C64 for a BMX, then missed a computer and ended up with a Spectrum, don't know why, I always regretted selling that C64.

I was learning to use Z80 at the time and I remember being very proud that I had learned to write a routine that merged some garbage with the screen that made it dissolve.

I showed my mate Ansel this routine and he humoured me, later that week he invited me around to his place to see his new computer that he had spent the last summer digging ditches to afford. It was the Amiga.

He was in touch with some guy called Darren H, who was in touch with the prolific mail trader Cosy. This boluders demo was on a compilation disk he had from Cosy.

Ansel showed me this demo first and I simply could not believe it.. I had heard that the Amiga was a powerful computer but actually seeing it and hearing it was a revalation, it was so far ahead of anything I had ever seen.

Because this was the very first demo I had seen on the Amiga it is very very special to me.. It's the whole reason I got involved with the demoscene, it started my love affair with 16 bit computers and indirectly it is the reason that this forum is here, it all goes back to this demo.

If I hadn't seen it I doubt I'd have got an Amiga that year for Christmas.

Because this intro is just so special to me I will give you a karma boost from my own karma :)

My only thought was that I wish this remake was in 800 * 600 because some of the words scroll off the screen when the text pauses, but you've made a wish of mine come true here nzo.

In fact when I set up retro-remakes.net this was the demo I had most hoped to see remade.

Thank you thank you thank you!

Yea, I noticed that the extra screen space would have come in handy.
It's funny how the early nostalgic stuff affects you when you see it again - pretty much everything I remade (both here and the DHTML stuff) was for personal memories (or other peoples - hehe)

Glad you enjoyed!

I really love that one. As Shocky says - it brings back good old memories.
In addition, reading that great scrolly also brings back other good memories
(like thinking of Thrust's Ottifanten-Demo).

Thanks a lot for this remake!

I really enjoyed it, I think it deserves to be put into 800X600 mode though and there are about 4 scroll effects missing.

The 1 pixel copperwobble, scroll height double (2 different effects) and there are two bounce speeds for the scroll.

The font doesn't look quite right too, the bottoms of the letters seem to be cut off, the colours look different to the original and the rip of the font doesn't look perfect, see the letter E for example, there are extra pixels on the font.

I would really love to see this remade 1:1, at the moment it is great but the devil is in the detail. I am probably more picky than most because I love this intro so much.

Welldone NZO dude :)

I've never seen this one before, and I love the wittyness of the scroller.

I updated this intro.
Because it's shocky's fav and I am a bit embaressed about cutting corners. :)
[edit]
Actually, I just compared to the original again and I noticed that I still miss the old 3 pixel modulo triangle effect. I can't reproduce this with the sin routine I use for the scroller fx, I would have to add another fx using a static table especially for that. Maybe a job for another evening :)
Main problem with this is that I originally developed a transit routine that morphs 1 sin effect into another, so adding a static based effect would be more difficult in this context.

It's definately better in 800*600 though nzo, thanks for going back to it :) I will of course love to see all the effects added when you have time, but in the meantime I want to upload it to RR as it is (I can always update the archive if you work some more on it), would that be ok? :)

For reference, here is the original amiga exe and also a clean rip of the font without the corrupted pixels :)

I already fixed the clipped font issue. as far as I can see, I just need to add one more sin effect to the font?

in the original the font has a different colour palette to the one in the remake, the font in the remake is not the same font as the original either, the letter e for example, look at the middle bit, there are extra pixels. The font from the actual demo is above.

There are some other details, such as when the tristar logo comes on the reflective bit is faded away, in the beginning the tristar logo becomes visible before the coloured in scroller, in the credits the text rises up and then sinks down (it doesnt scroll off), there are two fld effects missing where the scroller doubles in height, the spacing of letters is tighter in the original too, there are not so many pixels around the letter I for example.

Im a pain in the arse I know and I am sorry!

Of course - you know this demo inside out :)

It takes ages to keep referring back to the original and how long it takes for things to appear etc. Hopefully, I'll get some more stuff added soon..
