Title: [UDG] - Unusual Dither Graphics
Post by: combatking0 on January 11, 2013
Just a quick one - it took me a few days, but I think this meets the criteria.

Hopefully you will enjoy this one, and it may inspire those who have yet to decide how to present their UDG entries.

View online version (http://fx.barcodebattler.co.uk/UDG.htm) (music may not kick in until it has buffered)
Download (http://fx.barcodebattler.co.uk/UDG-UDG.zip) (music starts instantly)
 :bully: :bred:
Requires IE9+ or a recent version of FireFox or Chrome, or any HTML5 compliant browser.

Woooooaaaaahhhhh .... this simply rocks !!! Very well done ...

One question though - the screenshot look like an interference circle scene - I see a nice startfield, scroller and rotating cube though ?

Is there a hidden part?

Lots of things to like about this, really nice little entry and a good example of how to present your entry for the comp with the 2 tile sets shown :)

Thanks Nick, hopefully this will be an example to someone who's unfamiliar with the technique.

Watch the text scroller to the end, and the evil will reveal itself  :D

When I use winRAR to open the .zip it says: "unexpected end of archive" and when I try to extract it, it follows with: "the archive is either in unkown format or damaged". :(

Screenshot looks really nice though! :)
Can you put it online somewhere?

It's now up at http://fx.barcodebattler.co.uk/UDG.htm but the music takes a while to start, depending on your download speed.

Wow, that was really awesome! I'm impressed with the speed with which you made this too!  :o

Cool browser goodness and ran really smooth too.
Will be interesting to figure out how you did this, K++ for the inherent open souce nature of your demo!

Nice!! Works nicely on my iPad

I tried it on my iPod2 - it runs very slowly. iOS has come a long way since v2.

I can describe how it works in detail if you want, but it may be easier to understand if I annotate the code and re-upload it. The functionality shouldn't change.

Code comments and/or an explanation would be most excellent good sir!

I'll have a thoroughly annotated (and cleaned up) source ready tomorrow.

Great demo! I was impressed that it ran reasonably well in Firefox 3.6.18 despite the fact that my computer has really been chugging along with 50 tabs open for over a week.

On my Laptop - it run well in good Speed

Ipad 2 - It run so slow due dual core speed

Nexus 7- It run so well due to Quad core cpu :)

Nice one Combat King

Thanks everyone. I have annotated and optimised the code. It still draws the same graphics, but it should be a tiny bit faster and easier to understand for anyone wanting to know how it works.

If there's something I haven't annotated clearly, please let me know and I'll explain it here.

I tested the preivous version on my Samsung Galaxy Tab10.1 N. It ran a bit slow there - but this is normal for that device. I liked the fact that it ran at all!

Just viewed the new version on my laptop - and it seems to run a bit slower now (Chrome) - Will try it on my other PC later again.

The 4kb of comments may be getting in the way. I have now put them into a .txt file in the zip archive, and cleaned all comments out of the .htm file, so the 12kb of code can be interpreted faster by the browser (in theory).

Hmmm ... I tested it with Chrome. The javascript engine should be smart enough to skip comments IMHO. But to be sure - I will test the new version with my same laptop this evening.

Best,
benny!

That's very nice, cute soothing music, tileset that reminds me of green monitor on old XT computer with Hercules graphics card :)

Thanks Optimus. I was going for an old style, and I think the scan-lines add to the effect.

K++ for adding the comments! :)
I'm quite busy atm but in a week or so I'll be free again and able to leisurely inspect your the code and meaby work a bit on my own entry too.

Wow, really good! I like how each tile has a gradient to make it look like scanlines!
Title: Re: [UDG] - Unusual Dither Graphics
Post by: combatking0 on January 21, 2013
Cheers guys - the scan lines were a simple but hopefully effective touch which added some much needed detail to what would have otherwise been a basic dithering effect.

Worked fine on Opera, the music fit well with the cube and "that effect that i don't remember the name but it's commonly used on oldskool demos" :)

"that effect that i don't remember the name but it's commonly used on oldskool demos" :)

The subliminal message at the end? It could be a circular interference pattern.

Just saw online version Combatking0 : very amazing and nostalgic. I'm new here, if only I could find how to give you good karma points.

Hi Baudsurfer (great name btw - Is it because of the 300Baud akkustikkoppler /BBS scene?) ...  anyway - you need some posts before giving karma as far as I know. Maybe Shocky can tell the exact precondition for giving karma.

Anyway - welcome to the forums!

Hi Benny. Thank you for information about karma condition giving.

Also thanks for pseudo compliment. when I was a teenager, and first modems (hence BBS) came out in North America (before US Robotics gave them 2400 HST), I envisionned moDEM DEModulation as analog circular function signal wave, and as a semi-pro skateboarder then, I could see (with help of substances)  myself gliding on that wave as a surfer would. I don't know when or where "surfing the net" came from but that is the origins of my pseudo.

We've got a US Robotics modem at work. I'm not sure which year it's from though, but we don't use it any more.

They made some interesting noises - I wonder how long it would take to download a typical demo - or even a Windows service pack through one of these devices?

Cool one ck0! Your entries are getting better and better. Keep it up! I also liked the green about it, reminded me of the times I played Cauldron on an Amstrad CPC at a friends house. Good old times. <3
