Hi all, good to see everyone. Had a 403 problem myself just now logging in but seems ok after a couple of false starts. Thanks to Nick for keeping this place going all these years, as nino mentions above it is cool to have a more or less direct link back to the yabasic days through the peak of dbf itself. Good times!

You gotta change a var from 0 to 1 near the top to make the F1 game playable. It looks great!

Matt you are a legend. This is beyond cool.

Love the whole thing but especially that you can load up all of the files from Jim's archive.

It is 2AM right now but this is amazing and I'll be playing some of the old games (Shockwave's Tank Zone is 13 years old!) all week.

The closing date is midnight of May 15th.

Is that 00:00 on the 15th or the 16th of May?

Weather or not you win, I want you all to have fun taking part ;)

...have sun taking part, surely?

I've got buckets of work to do but hopefully if my workload clears I'll be able to chute in an entry.

That's a crazy price but I imagine it's useful for pros in certain areas.

The people in the user reviews who claim to be using it to store movies and music are just plain crazy, though.

So tonight.. I just grabbed these off the my bookshelf and am flicking through them looking for inspiration, tucking bits of paper in, and have my feet up with a record on the player in the background  ;)
That James Gleick book is a great overview of the mathematicians involved in CT.

Glad you figured out the solution. If you want to post long source code you could attach it as a .txt file with your post.

General chat / Re: Javascript processing 2.1
« on: January 19, 2014 »
Re: the thread title: I think we're all getting a bit confused with Java/script. Processing is based on Java. To quote Jim in the other thread:

Java - object oriented, compiled (to bytecode) language, which runs on the Java Virtual Machine.  Can make executable programs as well as run in a plugin in some web browsers
JavaScript/ECMAScript/js - interpreted script language implemented by most browsers, usually delivered in web pages though engines like Node.js can execute javascript on display-less servers (in the same way servers run PHP).  Unrelated except by name to Java.
JScript, JScript.NET - Microsoft's bastardisations of JavaScript
JQuery - a javascript library which provides an API which hides away browser differences. eg. document.getElementByName('id') becomes $('id') and will work on all browsers.

Crystal clear ;)

can i ask in simple terms, what's this processing thing all about? i skimmed through the links there but i am not fully understanding what its all about.
cheers
I know Hotshot has replied above, but just to add to this: I believe it's original aim was to provide a relatively simple programming language and environment with built in graphical capabilities to make coding more accessible to creative types who might not be so hot on code. I think the idea is that you can create data visualisations, etc. and create shiny visuals to go along your new arduino, etc based gizmo without worrying about too much set up.

There are lots of interesting projects on their site.

Quote from: processing.org
Processing seeks to ruin the careers of talented designers by tempting them away from their usual tools and into the world of programming and computation. Similarly, the project is designed to turn engineers and computer scientists to less gainful employment as artists and designers.

so it is possible to use intellisense
Yes, autocomplete, go to definition across multiple files etc. all work if you use VS as your editor.

I've been using VS2010 for some web stuff but some CSS(3?) commands just don't register with it. rgba(...) for example just gets lost. I've no internet connection at home so maybe I'm just missing an update.

Brackets looks great, giving it a download now.

i coded the last half of that little project with brackets and its very very good, it actually does intellisense and so far i never had any issues using it. another plus is that its really lightweight and doesn't take precious resources etc

I tried out brackets for a few hours just now. It's very good. Like you say, lightweight and fast. Brilliant program, I'll be using it a lot if I don't run in to any bugs!

Here's the link to Jim's archive of Yabasic programs, in case you missed it: http://members.iinet.net.au/~jimshaw/Yabasic/yabres/yabres.html

These were mostly posted on an old message board called Yabasic Programming, which used to be the board for ps2-yabasic.co.uk... But that's going back a bit.

You can still see the board at http://yabasicprogramming.yuku.com/ but it's been pretty much destroyed by database crashes and bad planning (not by anybody involved with the board, but by the hosts).

That board kind of morphed in to this one, more or less, and some people occasionally pop in to update us on their continuing adventures with Yabasic which is great to see.

Haiku looks nice. Is yab bundled with it or  does it need to be downloaded later? Are many people using it?
