General coding questions / Re: Spiral Copper?

It could very well just be a non-perspective horizontal shift.  Perhaps the shifting produces a forced perspective effect.

General coding questions / Spiral Copper?
« on: August 31, 2014 »
Wondering how "spiral copper" effects are done, where it will appear that several copper bars are twining together in a double or triple helix.  There are also a lot of other effects that use this, like square columns that seem to be twisting and untwisting, that sort of thing.

Here is an example of a crazy effect using this, starts at 14:50 or so:

Obviously the individual columns of a bitmap are being shifted based on a sine wave to get the cylindrical effect, but how exactly?

Perhaps I am being foolish and it isn't really being mapped onto a cylinder...

I have been relearning 6502 assembly after 35 years.  How much harder is x86?

Apologies if you worked on one of these games or are affiliated with Team 17, I didn't consider that and in that case what I said was quite rude.

>Supreme Commander 3 is on way

Is Chris Taylor associated with it this time or will it suck like 2 did?

I'll tell you one worth playing.  Wargame.  It's AMAZING and there is a pre-order discount if you order it while it's still in beta.  For my money it's the best RTS out by a longshot.  It's like a much more realistic Generals.

I won't be buying this until I see more of it, it looks simplistic.

Anyone up for Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance?  I'd also love to play Company of Heroes or Dawn of War II.

Because it was very effective at doing certain things.  There are probably other ways of getting there now..

General coding questions / Emulating COPR?
« on: February 17, 2014 »
Has anyone thought of doing partial or complete emulation of the Copper processors?  I write 2D games and I am fascinated by late 80s glitz.

Is that an insane idea that could be better accomplished by other means?

That's still up there as one of the strangest coincidences that ever happened to me.  Even considering the mitigating factors it's still pretty strange.

Anybody else?

I would think fans of Generals would love this game.  It's much more realistic and the supply management is far different, but the primary difference is in the brittleness of the units-- even main battle tanks are meat for their counters and their expense makes them a risky investment at best.  Resource points in this game come from control of sectors by bringing a (very vulnerable) command vehicle into a sector and hiding it in a forest or gully.

The freshest breath of air in RTS since Supreme Commander.

With a lot of these games it's not the financial cost, it's the time cost.  I wouldn't play a lot of these games unless I was the one getting paid.

I will install it here and PM you my steam id.  I am not that great though I did play the first.

Working on a semi-generalized color fading and cycling library.

Strangely enough, I was talking to nzo on another forum yesterday about something totally different, under his real name.  Strange, small world.

Actually it wasn't all that different.

We were talking about colorcycling effects.  (!!!!!!)  I was jokingly making fun of him about the Robotron intermission carpets and calling out his ability with cycling code!

I guess it makes sense that very few people are interested in this stuff so they would congregate in the same places.

You are... the man.

I guess I know what I'm doing tonight.

I loved Generals and I would like for this game to be good but I have zero confidence in EA at this point.

I firmly believe that this is one of the highest points in the entire demoscene prior to good 3D hardware.  Even now it is a masterpiece of visual and music design, more so than a mere technical achievement which it may or may not have been at the time.
