« on: February 05, 2014 »
So I thought this might interest some of you. This week's Humble Bundle features Civ III and IV, Ace Patrol and Railroads!, plus Civ V and some DLC if you pay more than the average.

You gotta pay 1 or more for the download codes. Enjoy!

General chat / 30 years of the C64

The BBC has a video of a guy showing a Commodore 64 to a group of promary and secondary school kids.

Best bit: one of the children says it only has one button compared to multiple buttons on modern controllers, so the camera focuses on the keyboard.

General chat / Somebody robbed my postbox.

I don't understand. Why, oh why, would anybody take a postbox from a house in the middle of nowhere?

General chat / Oxfam
« on: July 29, 2009 »
I was walking past Oxfam after it closed tonight. There was about 15 black refuse sacks full of books that were left there for the binmen. I'd seen these bags before, and people going through them, but I'd always assumed they were full of broken stuff. One of them was open this week so I had a look inside and they were all books in good condition, no rubbish. So I had a look through to see if there was anything good, and if I thought of it tomorrow I was gonna go in and complain.

Then some old woman who works there started banging on the window, shooing me away. I knocked on the door to ask her why they were chucking them all but she just waved me off. Back when I had a job for a newspaper I had to take a few pics in there, and I still had the contact details from one of the guys in head office in Dublin, so I emailed him just now to see if it's official policy to landfill all the books they don't sell or what. (It appears it is/was.)

I dunno, pissed me off a little bit; why the fuck would you donate if the stuff will be thrown out anyway? The couple of bags I looked through had a set of science books for kids, a set of encyclopedias, a bone-joint disease diagnoses book set for doctors, and a load of (shit, but sellable) chic-lit tat.

Free live CD in the Sunday Times today, makes for a nice listen. I saw them last week at Oxegen. They played a seriously tight set. Well worth seeing after 27 years 'cause they mightn't be around for long.

Just saw the shuttle pass in the sky. Two very bright lights moving very fast. Amazing. :D

Here's my entry: Windows Zoom Effect Nine.
Here's the story: I've started a new computer course and since we're not allowed to download anything here I've had to make this with the programs that come preinstalled on Widnows XP. So I made my entry using a piece of clipart, which I added some circles to using Microsoft Word, then I zoomed in on it with MS Paint, and added effects using Windows Movie Maker 2.1. This probably completely disqualifies me, but this is all I can do. :P I've attached the original image, below.

General chat / Rats
« on: January 09, 2009 »
So I haven't had a cigarette all day. I can't formulate thoughts properly, anybody I talk to, I argue with and I can only complete basic actions without stress. Talking to a friend earlier on quickly turned into me snapping answers at her and a complete communications block, followed by me losing any energy I had and taking a half hour nap in her lap.

Even though I could go to sleep for the night now, (and I don't have any energy to stay awake,) I'd feel like I'd wasted a day, even though I have nothing to do. Little noises are loud, like the time there were rats... or mice...? or little children...? in the attic above me and I couldn't sleep for two whole weeks. Not because they were that loud, but the noise was insidious, like they were scrapping the floor up there to try and specifically annoy me. Paranoia.

I'm going for a fag.

(The Politico) Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) said he still doesn't know
why police Tasered a University of Florida student during the
senator's speech Monday, saying, "I could have handled the situation
without interruption."

Kerry, however, was quick not to undermine the police decision to use force.

"I don't know what transpired," Kerry said. "The police must have had
a reason to make their decision."

The senator would not comment as to whether the police used an
appropriate level of force, saying, "That is a law enforcement issue."

Kerry was speaking at the University of Florida, when Andrew Meyer, a
student, burst into the room and ran towards a microphone, attempting
to ask Kerry a question. According to university officials, Meyer was
allowed to ask several questions before his microphone was cut off and
university police stepped in.

Meyer screamed: "Don't Tase me, bro!" as officers attempted to drag
him outside the auditorium, according to the Florida Alligator

Kerry said he never felt threatened by Meyer, saying he tried to quiet
the crowd and asked police to allow Meyer to ask his question.

"I have never had a dialog interrupted like that in 37 years, at any
event," Kerry said.

Meyer was charged with disturbing the peace and resisting an officer.
