« on: September 26, 2009 »
I have nearly completely restored the files for the showcase, there are just eight missing files, here are the eight we need to completely restore the showcase;

Wire - Hellfire (need full version)
Ledmania - Ninogenio
Plasmagirls - Optimus
Low Strez by Praecor (Need Final version)

Led Cubes - Hellfire
Led Tronic - Vain
golden_clock - rbz
perlinraytracedsphere - optimus
time_bend - hellfire
0.17% - Low-streZ - Praecor

The sooner we have these files, the sooner the showcase can come back and we can get the challenges started again! :)

If you have any of these missing files, please reply and attach them.

Cheers.

General chat / To Hostpapa with love

RE: www.nicksimpsonx.com

Dear Hostpapa,

I really loved the idea of your brand, the idea to let Papa take care of everything, the Green energy, the 99% uptime you promised, the unlimited storage space, unlimited databases. I was so impressed with all these marvellous things that you offered me that I was happy to hand over my money and also to trust you with my precious websites which had taken several years to build up.

Sure, they were not commercial websites, they were merely communities that were free of charge for everyone where new programmers could get a helping hand, I even told the members of the sites how great, helpful, fast and reliable our spiffy new green hosting was and how the lag we had experienced before on our old server was a thing of the past.

Everyone was so grateful towards you, nobody even seemed to mind when SQL crashed so often on your site, I did point this out to you of course and you told me that it was my scripts that were maxing out 15 simultanious connections, I wondered how difficult that must be to do and I estimated that I'd probably need several hundred people browsing my forums at once to cause the problem but Papa knows best of course and who knows, maybe my complete memberlist logged on to the site whenever I turned my back on it.

Even recently after all the downtime some of my members told me to give you a last chance and I did. That was before someone on the same server as me allegedly ran a script which went haywire and completely wiped out my websites.

I would like to congratulate you on the timely manner that you answered my politely worded support tickets, it was perfectly reasonable of you to make me wait 3 days for a response to such trifling requests as "my site is offline and I can't access anything, cpanel is showing no files", why would I be concerned anyway, my communities only took years to establish, it speaks volumes of your service that the directory structure was wiped out and I could not even put up a place holder page to reassure my visitors.. In fact, several weeks later the directory structure is still wiped out.

Your online chat needs a mention too, I've been on this planet for 37 years and I have never met such an inept bunch of technicians and I just wonder if there is actually a question that they know the right answer to. They fobbed me off at every opportunity, as did the feckless idiot that I spoke to on the phone.

You should be commended that at no point has anyone in your organisation offered an apology for the dataloss, nobody has offered me any help.

So, I am left to sum things up, I know that a refund is out of the question, I have google and I've read how you treat your customers so I will tell you what you have already been told no doubt a few thousand times by your customers.

Your service is terrible, your tech support people are stupid and do not care, you couldn't care less about your customers data, your servers are oversold, slow and uptime I would say is less than 90% (and you cant argue with this point because it is my true experience).

Thankfully I have taken my business elsewhere now so I invite you to take your environmentally friendly hosting, stick it on the end of a (green) pole and shove it so far up your asshole that you can clean your teeth with it.

You can take this as a request to cancel my plan (www.nicksimpsonx.com) and take this as an assurance that myself and at least some of the 1200 members of my two communities have a great opinion of your utterly unprofessional rabble and will be writing appropriate reviews to warn other unsuspectiong people away from you.

Yours Sincerely,

Nick Simpson

General chat / Cracktros Are Back.
« on: September 17, 2009 »
As was speculated a while ago by Widowmaker and Myself, there were rumours abound that Razor 1911 and Skid Row were two teams working on cracktros.

The speculation was that one day crack intros would again become part of the exe file on the PC.

This happened today, Skid Row released a game with a built in cracktro;

http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=53849

To me this is utopia, I don't condone piracy but I do condone those lovely little intros because they formed part of my adolescence and it's good to know that some of the old guys can still remember the times of the C64 and Amiga and want to preserve old traditions.

Hats off to Skid Row.

General chat / Portal Is Partly Back
« on: September 16, 2009 »
Hey ho, well work continues on restoring the site.. I have partially restored the portal, mainly because I am sure that not having it there was hurting our page rank.

The portal was a large project, it had a content management system and many sections.
Even though the layout looks the same, it's been extensively re-written. The site as it was will not appear again.

I am deciding how best to impliment the showcase, this is quite a tricky part of the portal and then I need to make the content management system for admins to add things and administrate the shoutbox etc.

There are still a multitude of things that need fixing on this website, I am working through them, if you feel like I am ignoring your request, just keep reminding me and bully me into it.. The chances are that I have innocently forgotten your request with everything else that is going on right now.

Please put any bug reports in the bug thread, I will look at that every day.

And now, feel free to go to www.dbfinteractive.com and have a look at the new portal.

I still need to brighten the colours up a touch but what is there at the moment functions well.

I'm very sad to hear about this..

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8256260.stm

He was the only cook I used to enjoy watching on TV, the guy was a shamboilc inspiration to a lot of people.. I have fond memories of watching his programs on TV when I was a child, he was so effortlessly down to earth and typically British, a sad loss.. He died too young.

General chat / Gotcha!
« on: September 15, 2009 »
I have been puzzling over the black rain theme that we're using for the board, specifically the border around the edges.

Obviously I would liek the portal to look pretty close to the style of the board and I have been wondering how to make those nice borders because they are not image based and are not a standard border style.

I've sussed it out now.

What Crip did was to have a 1 pixel border on a containing table, making the background colour grey and having some padding.

Another table is contained inside this with the right hand and top edges only being coloured.

Nice effect.

Respect.

General chat / Sundown Party Report
« on: September 13, 2009 »
Sundown party report.

This year, the same as last year I traveled up to Sundown with Wayne, it's a decent trip from where I live, it's about 3 and a half hours drive. The waether over the weekend was glorious, the beach must have been great, although I was too drunk to go to the beach later on in the night.

On arrival the place was pretty busy. We got there on Saturday, it was impossible to arrive Friday because of family commitments, but by all accounts the atmosphere was excellent on Friday night, we set up in between Spiny of Torment and Andy and Dave from RCM, there was not a lot of room but it was ok, internet was slower than ever this year, as we have come to expect from Sundown (thats part of its charm). We'd also missed the bacon rolls this time, we arrived just a little bit too late for them.

I set about trying to code something to release at the party, I had started on something just before the forum crashed, since that time my efforts have been fully geared into repairing the site, I had my doubts that I would make something in time for the deadline, eventually I came up with a kind of grid thing, Andy from RCM was working on something and so was Littlewhite who later came to sit with us (a really nice guy and a pleasure to meet him! Thanks for greeting DBF in your demo too).

I guess that comparisons have to be drawn to last year and for some reason the comps were very delayed and there were some technological problems with stuff and only a handful of entries for each competition, down in number a lot from last year but there were some real gems in amongst them.

The main thing was the friendly spirit at the party, it is attended by a great bunch, Ruairi was as welcoming as ever and it was good to catch up with some of the people from last year.

Sleeping was an ordeal, there were freaks sleeping everywhere, on the stage, in the hall, in the foyer... Wayne and I had a rather uncomfortable night sleeping in the foyer, on waking up there was an inordinate amount of empty beer cans all over the place, it will take a long time to clean up the hall.

It doesn't sound like a brilliant appraisal, in truth it wasn't quite as much fun as last year but nevertheless it was a great little party and I shall be looking forward to the next one, I hope that Ruairi doesnt take too much criticism for the party because it's really great that someone in the UK is taking the bull by the horns and taking the financial risk and investing the time into organising the only real UK demo party around these days.

And btw, Waynet has some photos too ;)

General chat / Sponsorships.
« on: September 06, 2009 »
If anyone wants to become a sponsor of the forum, they can do so by checking the paid subscriptions tab in their profile.

It uses paypal to make the donations.
In the interests of transparrency I will note all the donations to the site here as well as our expenditure.

The budget will be used to pay for hosting and competitions.

This Years Costs (from 28/08/09):

Hosting : 95.44 GBP
Domain DBF: 6.50 GBP (Approx)
Domain RR: 6.50 GBP (Approx)
Total:     108.44

Sponsorships:

Drewpee: 30 (06/09/09)
Hellfire: 10 (06/09/09)
Moroboshisan: 10 (06/09/09)
Zawran: 30 (06/09/09)
Ninogenio: 10 (06/09/09)
Hezad: 10 (07/09/09)
Waynet: 30 (13/0909)

This is just to give people a rough idea of what's going on, I never intended to make money from the site, if anyone wants to donate anything anonymously they may do so and I'll add it into the list above.

It may take a day or so for you to show as a sponsor of the site, I have to update your title manually you see.

Thanks.

General chat / We Are Back!
« on: September 06, 2009 »
Here is a detailed synopsis of what happened to the forum... No doubt you all have questions so this will answer them hopefully and show you what you can do to help restore the site to 100%.

First of all, we were not hacked (well according to our hosts anyway), the official word from them after a lot of hassle was that someone ran a rogue script on the server that DBF and Retro-Remakes was hosted on.

The script executed its' self over 500,000 times and corrupted the server resulting in total data loss, everything was destroyed, even the directory structure of the site was wiped out which meant that I could not put a place holder page up at first. This was very frustrating.. The damage occured at a lower level than my control panel for the website, cpanel loaded with errors, I could not even access the site by ftp, it was all gone.

Hostpapa have been grossly unproffessional, uncaring and terrible to deal with, I have not recieved so much as an apology from them for the incident, all they told me was "the server is back up it should be safe for you to rebuild your site now".

Utter, Utter shit heads. Don't do business with this company.

Anyway, obviously you are looking at DBF right now so how come you can still see it if everything was destroyed?

One Word... Backups.

I am a dilligent webmaster, I back up the database every friday evening, fortunately I had just backed it up before the site crashed, we have not lost a single post as far as I can tell.

Tetra had backups of Retro-Remakes and He has totally restored that site.

As for files... Well, you must understand that there were 2.6gb of files on the server. I did not habitually download these file backups, I backed up the whole site twice every month and saved the backup to the root folder (to save costs as I have a download limit with my isp).

I would normally download a full backup to my computer each month, a HD crash earlier on in the year meant that I lost all hard copies of DBF since the end of 2008 until june but I thought I was ok because I had downloaded quite a recent one(July), for verification ask Jim, I told him that I had just taken a full backup about a month ago.

Little did I know that my FTP program was in ascii transfer mode when I downloaded it resulting in a useless 2.6gb archive.

This has a very profound effect on the site because all the post attachments that have been added since August 2008 are gone, if you click on them they will go to error 404.

The same thing is true for avatars and compo sigs awarded after this date.

I have managed to restore about 3,000 of the attachments, the rest of the restoration is going to be down to you all, I will open a thread so that you can upload new attachments for your posts and the site moderators and admins will edit them into your posts.

There will be instructions in that thread of how to go about it and I'll be issuing guidelines to the mods so that they know how to do it for you. If any of you want to voulunteer to help fix the posts, please let me know so I can give you the needed privilages on a temporary basis.

So, a list of things to be fixed;

 • Some Compo Sigs Need To Be Restored. (If you have been awarded a sig and it's not showing please DO NOT edit it out of your sig, once I replace these files it will fix automatically).
 • Some Avatar are missing (please re-upload your avatar if you are affected).
 • Missing attachments need to be replaced (with your help please).
 • New portal needs to be created to interface with the new software.
 • Googlebot and Spiders Mod needs adding.
 • Arcade Mod needs adding.
 • Any other bugs that are bound to be found.
 • A New theme is needed for the site.

As far as this happening again is concerned, I have taken the following big step.

I bought a hosting package with a new provider which has managed backups, it automatically backs everything up every day, this hosting is expensive, I can't afford it.

RR and DBF now cost about 95 per year each to have online. I don't earn as much as I used to, this is a big commitment for me.

I added an option in your profile to donate to the site, any donations will go towards the hosting, any surplus will be kept for competition prizes.

Finally, this is the third time in our history that we have been brought down to our knees and we have always come back strong... I did have a dark week when I wondered if I should put it all back online, I worked fucking hard this week to get this much back, I must say that the many messages of support I have had from members of this community have been a great help and probably convinced me to start again, I was ready to throw the towel in.

Anyway it's back, enjoy it, if you find anything that needs fixing, please let us know in this thread.

Nick.

General chat / BITS Kerfuffle
« on: August 28, 2009 »
Lots of shit is hitting the fan at the moment over the Bits competition at Sundown.

As you all know, I was planning on taking the best entries from our Bits tribute competition;

CODE A SHIT DEMO

There are several undeniable facts.

BITS have released something like 80 - 120 productions over the last 6 years, they have never improved.
They ignored all comments about thumbing up their own work, cheap file hosting and general comments about the lack of improvement of their work.
Solo posts random crap in the One Liner and made a constant nuisance of himself to the Pouet admins.
Solo submits his prods to parties and actively tries to disrupt party organisers by claiming that they refused to show his shit demo at their comp.
Solo tries to charge people 3 euros per demo.

It is the perfect behaviour of a troll, or I suspect a group of about 3 or 4 well known sceners (I have my ideas who they are) who release this crap.

Rc55 got an email of Herman Samso asking him to stop the BITS tribute comp or face legal action.

Amazingly the comp has been stopped after certain people called the comp a way of singling out and picking on a scener, conveniently ignoring the truth that this collective of people have been trolling the fuck out of the scene for the last 6 years.

The Jury is out, Is Solo really some fucked up idiot living in Gran Canaria or is he a bunch of Well known German? and Dutch? Sceners having a joke at the whole scene's expense?

I really don't know if the entries will be shown at Sundown but I will take them.

If Solo emails me and threatens me, as far as I am concerned I will see him in court.

Challenges & Competitions / BITS CHALLENGE

SUNDOWN BITS CHALLENGE

Welcome to the BITS Challenge!

[Create your very own broken demo!!!!]

If you've ever been on Pouet in the last few years you may have seen demos from a group called The Bits Club.
They are pretty bad... Professionaly bad even. Bits have released dozens of bad demos on many platforms, Pc, Gameboy, Amiga, ST, C64, not many playforms have escaped them.

Here are some examples of their work;

Bits are the perfect scene trolls, they are headed by Solo who notably ignores any criticism and advice levelled at him, posts nonsense in the oneliner but never actually breaks any rules.

Because of the variety of platforms that these "demos" are released on, it is widely suspected that Bits are a fake group comprising of several quite well known sceners, they submit demos to most scene parties but never attend any, and finally they annoyed the pouet gloperators so much that new BITS products do not even appear on Pouet any more, Solo is limited to posting in the one liner and the bbs now.

A list of past Bits demos;

http://www.pouet.net/groups.php?which=5718

Sundown embraces the lameness of BITS and the challenge here is to create your own tribute demo to them, it will be submitted to the bits competition at Sundown this year.

We will have a vote at the end and the best 8 will get submitted into the Bits competition at Sundown by me.

It's only a small challenge, so you have 2 weeks :)

There's no excuse not to enter this, it doesnt take any skill!

Here are the rules!

 • Exes only (Windows, Amiga, ST, C64, Vic 20, GBA  are fine)
 • Your Demo Must Contain Shit Coder Made "Music", Or Beeps or corrupt sound effects
 • Your Demo Must Contain Coder Made Gfx
 • Cut of date for entries is 29th August 2009 (23:39 GMT).
 • Two Entries Per Person Maximum.
 • Entries Will NOT Be displayed in our showcase! Even if they win!
 • The winner [S?] will be decided by a poll of forum users and the best 8 will go to sundown with me.
 • Late entries will not be counted for voting.
 • Please include a screenshot of your entry in your post.
 • Please only post finished work, if you update your entry the final one will be voted on.
 • You May NOT post a new version in your thread/update your entry after  the deadline for entries.
 • Please do not use cutting edge stuff like shaders, there is no need.
 • Your entry must have a random number at the end.. eg : BITS#4645.
 • Please prefix your entrioes with [BITS]
 • The rules are not open for discussion, if you see a glaring omission though, please PM me, posts questioning the rules will have to be deleted unfortunately.

There are no cash prizes, however...
