I just saw this, for Shockwave: Dark Tower: the Game.
I haven't looked into the book yet, but I will.

There's nothing holding it back anymore.
So where are the big studio games, like the endless fps's that all boast destructable terrain? I can see a lot of strategic potential in a dynamic environment that retains it's volume. So wherever you dig/carve/blast/whatever, the rubble remains. I know little to nothing about the technical difficulties, but it seems as easy as emptying one cluster of voxels and filling another.

Actually, I just want to see a 3d digdug game! :)

Awesome stuff, love voxels, started a thread about them on gamedev.net a few years back, to ask why I never see them used, even though I knew some impressive voxel demos. I believe the conclusion was that it takes too much memory...?

When I think about voxels I think about Commanche (helicopter DOS game), with exceptionally cool voxel terrains. I don't see why this game isn't bested yet (to my knowledge), all hardware components have improved over the years and commanche looks good to me even today (screeny). Also Ken Silvermans voxlap ran silky smooth on my hardware at least 3 years back.

Cool post rain_storm, new exe worked for me, awesome work!
What do you say is holding voxels back?

Awesome mind blowing stuff!

I don't play as many games anymore, even though they're still my main interest. The few I do still play are smaller games with shorter gameplay sessions, mostly downloadables.

A few I really liked and remember:
World of Goo - Wii
Hydroventure - Wii
Locoroco - ps3
Pixeljunk shooter - ps3
Trial HD - xbox 360
Portal - xbox 360

There are 2 cool demo's on ps3, anybody on this site with a ps3 should really check them out, well under $5.
Linger in Shadows by Plastic <- love this one!
Detuned by farbraush

Only 2 games I'm really looking forward to:
Beyond good and evil 2 - I really hope it will see the light of day.
Half life: episode 3 - I just hope it won't use Kinect!

I love the direction the game industry is heading though, about time to look into new input interfaces. Gotta love Nintendo for the innovation they continue to bring. Interesting how Nintendo pretty much designed every aspect of gaming today (Hardware and software). :)

[EDIT] Oh, for the oldschool crowd: There's a fan made sequel to Kings Quest, free of charge available online: http://www.tsl-game.com/. The textbased original still wins though.

Thanks jim, that was awesome! :)

I mostly used it for HDR images to generate the lighting and often left the cam in there. But you can use the clone brush in photoshop to brush it over with neighbouring pixels or you can take 2 pictures from the sides at slightly different angles and copy over the pixels where the camera is.

I used this technique to make 360 reflection maps and HDRImages to light 3d scenes. A friend demonstrated this technique though, I never would have thought of this myself. Well done!

I used chinese stress balls for the reflection (nice and smooth surface), there are balls dedicated to this purpose but they can be quite expensive.

I'm a big fan of water, the most underrated drink in history! I fill up bottles with water and put them in the minibar in our living room, where I work most of the time. Friends I live with have now developed the same habit. We now got the luminous idea of scoring one of them water coolers! :)

I also blend a lot of smoothies, banana's or frozen strawberries with milk, definitely my recommendation!

As for soda pop, we're big fans of fernandes, pink mostly.

Hi Kirl, that server died long ago and the file mirror benny kindly provided has gone too.  I will see if I can fix that and attach the zip to the original demo post.  I hope I still have it!
That would be really cool, thanks! :)

Not sure about space, but meaby DBF can host all demo entries instead of only the top 3? Few things are as dissapointing as bad links in old, but interesting threads. With an average of <1Mb per entry that might be possible.

631
Yeah, I got the longest bar :)
Nice to see nobody got 0 votes this time.
Personally I would like to see Kirl's animation-entry further at the top because it was a cool and creative effect mixed with an oldschool scroller.
A realtime version had probably won...
Hey thanks, interestingly enough I looked into 2d metaballs yesterday and though it runs terribly slow, I'm excited I managed to get the effect down. A realtime 3d version isn't anywhere within my capabilites yet, but one day...  ;)

Congrats guys, well done!

Penny Traitor should have done better than 4th... What a great entry that was!
Aw, I got curious and looked up the thread but the link doesn't work anymore... :(

@ Hellfire
One day I'll make the venture into bit-twiddling as well though, right now I'm confined to Flash's capabilities. I already miss stuff like sound controll for example (beyond volume and panning). I'd really like to do something like deTuned for ps3, only with more interesting interaction.

Speaking about deTuned (by Farbrausch), Linger in shadows (by Plastic) rocked, Haujobb should really do a cool ps3 demo as well! ;)

Months of coding can save minutes of planning!  ;D

That's my aproach as well, I start with a general idea and when that's sort of working, I try various more specific fx. In the end I choose what I want to use and smooth out the rough edges.

I've only entered 3 challenges so far, 2 of which I won. So minus this last challenge my average is a perfect 1st.   8)
Still nothing compared to Hellfires track record...  :o

I'm only really active with Flash/actionscript2.0 though, which is a rather high level language and a platform focussed on graphics, so sometimes I feel I have an unfair advantage in that regard. On the other hand as it's such high level, it runs a good deal slower then lower level languages.

I really like the fact that these challenges are so open, because in the end who (but us nerds) really cares how it was made; Creativity is where it's at!

Welcome SteamCoal!  :hi:

The color you chose for the text was a bit hard to read, I had to highlight your text to be able to read it...
