[REMAKES] Brutal 3 - Light
« on: September 25, 2008 »
One of my favourite C64 demos.  This is just the first part of the demo, there are about 7 parts in the original.

To see the original you can download the .d64 file from http://www.c64.ch/demos/download.php?id=83

And WinVICE (C64 emulator) from http://www.viceteam.org/#download

This is my first remake, and it was harder than I thought it would be.  Trying to extract the exact fade colours was a bitch. :)

Edit: Fixed some bugs, added some greets to the end of the scrolltext, allowed windowed version, now exits as per the original on pressing space or esc exits straight away.

Edit 2: Removed ugly console window from background

New version attached in this post.

That demo is indeed very cool, you've made a really good job on this so far, identical as far as I can tell, except that it doesn't exit properly when you press space. When you press space in the original, the bar fades out and the logo drops down the screen, and that would be part one finished!

I am not sure what Stormbringer would think about having just one part of a seven part megademo? I guess that if you can just finish this part it will be ok as the other bits can be done seperatey?

We don't have any C64 things on Retro Remakes yet and it's about time we did. :) Here's hoping that you can fix the exit when the viewer presses space :)

Really great!!!

My first and only comment for now would be: "What about getting rid of the console mode and having it running as a window application?" .. I do not see the need for a console mode for such a prod.

Then... the quality is really great here and getting the other 6 parts would grant you not only high marks for accuracy but also high marks for difficulty!

@Shockwave: having C64 remakes is something that I was expecting for a long time. I'd like to release some also after the compo is finished!

@Voltage: not so easy, isn't it? Especially getting the C64 colors right... well the C64 had its colors generated in YUV color space, not RGB, thus the colors were analog, not digital and slightly different on PAL when compared to NTSC systems. Getting the right colors on a modern PC is still a challenge. Here is a nice tutorial and explanation about the C64 palette: http://www.pepto.de/projects/colorvic/

Wow, awesome work Voltage!! I like the original Light, and your version.

Unbelievable how identical you got all those logo star shinies + other parts there.

You rock!

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

New version attached in 1st post.

 - Fixed some bugs
 - Spacebar now exits as per the original
 - Esc will still exit straight away
 - Windowed or fullscreen, although the windowed version is a bit dodgey
 - Added some scroll text and greets to the end of the original scrolltext

Thanks for making the intro compliant with the rules Voltage, it's a worth one and I will add it to retro-remakes myself in a few minutes :)

Well done, good luck in the voting and congratulations for making the first C64 remake to be accepted at retro-remakes :)

And many thanks for your nice greetings list :D I'm happy to be included.

One thing, you might want to do is get rid of the black console window that hangs about in the background.

Overall really welldone Voltage dude; great work. Must of been tricky getting those stars patterns right.

one word: FANTASTIC!

but would be good if you can get rid of the "console" mode. Of course this is not taken into account for the voting, but it would look nicer ;)

Ugly console window removed from background, top post updated.

Thanks for adding to RR Shockwave!

@Clyde:  The star patterns were a little tricky, in that I have to go and find the original 6510 code and toy with it for a while till I understood how the data was stored.  But as it turns out the animation tables (for the sprite frames) and the location tables (for the sprite positions) were already sync'd.  So when I tested my routine for the first time using their data... it worked straight away.  pffft.  I thought it would be harder too. :)

Oh wow!

This takes me back a few years.  It's not just the resolution and the colours, it's the little sparkles flying across the logo and the blocked parallax. I dunno, it just reminds me soo much of those days :D
