[PLANTLIFE] Umm, a big tree type thing
« on: July 05, 2008 »
Phew!

Only just made it (and then it wouldn't upload).  I had to abandon my original idea and throw this together from the remnants of the code.  Ah well, at least I submitted something :D

Thanks for the nice comment, but to be honest, it's a very rushed effort and looks it. Although I'm pleased that the tree does at least look like a tree.  The colours are awful, I didn't put a scroller in it, or even any music, and there was so much more I was intending to do.

I wasted a few hours this evening coding up the thing I've attached to this post.  It worked fairly well, but the central line wouldn't display no matter what I did and it didn't scale well past the first blade of grass.  Ho hum.

My actual entry was thrown together in about an hour after I realised that my initial plans just wouldn't be done in time :(

Well, that's my own silly fault for not working on this beforehand :)

Although in my defence, after watching the previous entries, it was hard to think of something that wasn't copying one of those.  They are all unique and wonderful in their own right.

@xalthorn:
Yeah. Indeed, very well done - and in such a short time.
Unbelieveable. Like the growing tree a lot.

Your second entry - the waving grass - also looks very
interesting. Never saw such a thing before !!!

Okay, here's the source code.  It's still very messy, but I think I've removed the extraneous code...

Wow! You made it with only 2 minutes to spare! :)

I like the entry you entered better than the grass tbh ;) Good luck! I am assembling the poll now!

I like the entry you entered better than the grass tbh ;) Good luck! I am assembling the poll now!

Well the grass wasn't going to be a single blade of grass, it was going to be a field of grass with a flower growing in the middle.

Except I got hung up on the centre line not being drawn (I still don't know why it didn't) and it wasn't scaling (processor wise) very well.  The odd thing about that drawing is that I'm drawing the filled sections first and then the three lines (two edges and a centre line).  The edges are shown, but the centre line became just a series of dots, except when the blade bent far enough, you could see it.  If I comment out the filled sections, all three lines are visible.

Very bizarre.

(and neither of those ideas (the tree or the grass) were what I was intending to do, but I couldn't get the look right on the thing I wanted to do)

Umm, it's all 2D, no fancy 3D stuff at all.  It just fakes it :D

It's not an L-System, as it doesn't iterate, it simply makes decisions as it goes along from the thick trunk.

I like this very much, especially considering the short time, great entry.

Somehow reminds me of Scorched Earth on DOS. :)
