[PHENOMENA] Galactic Doppler Shift
« on: October 23, 2011 »
I'm not sure if Doppler Shift is something that counts in the rules, as I find it to be a grey area, but it is an optical effect which is barely visible to the human eye.

Doppler Shift is also an every day audiable effect, so I'm hoping this entry will be accepted, since Doppler Shift is a common occurance for those working near a police station, hospital or fire station.

I hope you enjoy it, and I have explored an effect on the sine scroller which should hopefully get any Flash coders to ask how I did it :)

(UPDATE) I forgot to import the full-stop character the first time round. Other than that, nothing has changed.

Good show, interesting phenomenon as well!

So how did you achieve the text colour effect?  :D

So how did you achieve the text colour effect?  :D

I used an image with a colour gradient, from top to bottom blue to white to red. Then I applied the "multiply" blendmode to it. This makes it invisible on a black background, and visible when something white goes behind it :D

That was an interesting description of the doppler effect in the scroller.

I like the heavy metal sonic song too.  :)

That's a clever trick CK0, thanks for sharing! :)

I realised something while randomely pressing keys on my keyboard last night (hoping for Hamlet, but alas). I'm familiar with the description of this phenomenon, but shouldn't light travel at a constant speed, regardless of the speed difference with the observer? Or is this one of the mysteries of the wave-particle duality?

Also while on the subject, does light actually travel slower through water or does it take longer because it's straight path is bent?

The light travels at the same speed, regardless of the motion of the object emitting it, but the wave-fronts of the light are either pushed closer together (resulting in a shorter wave-length) or pulled further apart (resulting in a longer wave-length), shifting the light colour towards blue or red.

Light travels fastest in a vaccuum, and slightly slower in denser materials, such as air or water. Different wavelengths travel at slightly different speeds in dense materials too, which is why the component colours of light appear to split in a glass prism.

Thanks everyone.

I wasn't sure that the tune would be as popular as it is, but if anyone wants a download link, I can find it.

I think this is a really good idea for this comp held back by Flash.  Can you do one with 100x more pixels in it, where you can get closer to the fx?
