Planet Script for GIMP
« on: March 15, 2007 »
I came across a planet generation script for GIMP. I followed the tutorial and produced this one as a test. This would make good backgrounds or space game images.

Thanks guys. The pic was just a quick hack to see how to do the effect. I might try and whip up a little space scene. :)

It looks really good Rick, I haven't used GIMP before, is it any good?
I heard it was tricky to use.

It is basically an OS version of Photoshop, alhough it may not have all the capability of PS. It is a bit tricky to use, but well worth the effort to learn as it enables you to do stuff you just can't with other packages, and of course it is free. :)

I need a new paint program.. I tried to buy Photoshop online and what a nightmare that turned out to be! Corel's website is seriously bad, it seems impossible to even email them!

That's a much nicer background than you had in the first one :) I liked the first planet better though because it looked more bumpy, still I don't suppose a water planet would be bumpy would it?

Nice looking planet. I also prefer the first one so far. (SW you might want to try out paint.net, get it here: http://www.getpaint.net/index2.html )

Fairly comprehensive tutorial of how to make a planet here: http://www.solarvoyager.com/images/tutorials/planet_tutorial_large.jpg

Thanks guys.

The first planet used a bump map as a texture so that is why it is a bit bumpy. Of course bumpy water would look a bit odd, so I didn't use a bump map for Water World. :) Considering I am no artist, I thought it turned out pretty good.

I did a retouched version of the pic here.

zawran your tut link didn't work for me, but I found the tut page on the site: http://www.solarvoyager.com/tutorials.asp

Some good stuff there.
