[REDUCED RES] Elements
« on: August 28, 2008 »
This demo pushes several limits. I do really like to work within limitation so I challenged myself to go even lower resolution than the maximum.

The action (lol) takes place in a 32x28 screen. The same 4 colors are used for the entire demo but I create an illusion of different hues and intensity levels though color swapping at 60 fps. There are some sounds too included so you may want your speakers on.

I wanted to pay tribute to the pixel with this demo. You have red, green and blue for each pixel and they together form something much more complex.
This demo plays on the notion of basic elements forming the world.

Here is a screen and demo. Sorry about the messyness of the files but I just ran out of time to do everything.

*THIS DEMO HAS RAPIDLY FLASHING COLORS AND PATTERNS*

If you have had a seizure or feel that you may have one do not try this please. I'd rather place dead last than cause illness.

The only problem is there is slight shearing going on here but if you were to sync to refresh rate this effect would not work so well. Its amazing just how many colours you have gotten using only red green blue and black. Best effort at extending the pallet that I have seen in the compo and not a drop of dithering needed to do it.

It's totally cool how you've made so many colours without dithering and it's ultra-ultra low res too :)

A pleasure to see this, good luck in the voting!

Thanks guys, I had some more "fancy" effects originally but they did not translate well and just cluttered the screen.  ;)

32x28 + 4 colors = nice! That's a good tribute to the pixel.

In the final scene after mixing I keep pushing my arrow-buttons because
I'd like to explore and swim more in those pixels :)

Good idea about elements + nice you made all the sounds/gfx yourself.
