Yacube running
« on: May 29, 2009 »
OK Shockwave, I was off work with a virus this week so I typed Yacube

A lot of typing and a lot of debugging later...

Parabellum was out to beat you allright!

Looks like I`m running out of Yabasic to type.  Oh well, I might try writing something then.  Don`t expect much though.

Wenlock.

Parabellum made a really nice demo there, I couldn't believe it when I saw it :)

Shortly after that demo we decided to learn a new language and we both got into Blitz basic for a while, looking back at it I am still really impressed. I wonder how he is these days, I haven't heard from him for over a year.

There's no time like the present :)

Still a few to go, just did all of Parabillums Static demos.  Cool.

There's quite a few games to go, but some of them are huge...

Apart from a lot of tinkering with BASIC, I did get an old Visual BASIC for DOS at one stage.  I made a program to ZIP/ARJ/ARC (whatever) a number of files individually.  Another was a DOS command that emulates the DISPLAY command in OS9.
display 80 80 80 results in aaa on the screen, it's a way  of sending ANSI to the screen in hex.   OS9 users used it to send control codes to remote terminals.  Colour codes to a VT220 for example.

What I've got now wouldn't leave much room out of 4 memory cards!

I have to admire your patience typing those listings in :)

I used to give those away for competition prizes a long time ago ;)

Really,!   Did they come with YABASIC ?

Back in the days of 8 bit micros I would type listings from magazines just to get some programs.   That was when I wasn't modifying them.  Those were the days!

Just finished HELICOPT and now typing dotcube.

BASIC is so much fun..

Wenlock ;)

If you were lucky, your ps2 memory card prize would turn up with all the programs already on it ;)

Cool!

Got Cobradem and Con done now too,

That's over 75% done.

I've backed all the demos up on a 512MB SD card in case the PS3 HD fails.

Now, theres probably only a few demos left, the rest are mostly games.

Great to see people still taking an interest in these great codes. If I haven't welcomed you already, welcome Wenlock :D

I might buy another PS2 just to play Jetpac again.

Hi Yaloopy,

Seen your name in quite a few of the greets in demos!

Yeah, takes me back to the days of typing code into my Tandy Colour Computer 3.

Maybe I better type some games in, I've almost run out of demos!

Shame Sony wasn't pushed to improve YABASIC ..

C Ya.

Shame Sony wasn't pushed to improve YABASIC ..

There were quite a lot of people who wanted this to happen, namely to fix the memory leaks, include some kind of sound support and file handling and other bugs but this never happened.

The thing to remember about it was that Yabasic was only ever bundled on the demo disk to grant it exemption from a console import tax by classifying the console as a programmable computer.

We all thought that Sony was a cool company back then and there were always rumours that these bugs would be fixed.. Sony had even registered some domain names for Yabasic and stuck some comments about the language on there.

As much as we all hoped though, nothing was ever released to patch the language which really sucks.

These days I think there is even more potential for console makers to get a homebrew community going.. Think about it, online play is commonplace now and consoles come with large storage devices, be that memory cards or internal hard drives.

A programmable console with a proper programming language would guarantee purchases from the demoscene, thats for sure, but I guess that the likes of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo would rather you shell out serious cash for a dev kit instead, which is a shame.. I think that there are still lots of people out there who have good original ideas but no chance of making them happen on a console... They just buy PC's instead now and make games like World of Goo.... .   .    .

Some part of Sony still wants you to program their consoles.  The PS2 and PS3 both have support for Linux and the PS3 has an OtherOS mode where it can run pretty much anything.  The technical ability barrier for entry is obviously much higher than Yabasic though, and the part of Sony that wants the console to be a set top box is winning over the part that wants Linux.
