Forum Upgrade
« on: April 08, 2011 »
For your information..

I am going to attempt to upgrade the forum software this weekend.
There will certainly be some problems, the risks are;

1: The front page will stop working and have to be taken offline.
2: That it will corrupt the database.
3: It will corrupt session cookies and may prevent you from logging in until you clear your cookies.
4: That there will be a shitload of broken links all over the place.

I've enquired with our hosts about whether they will be able to restore the site if it all goes wrong and they said yes.

Before the upgrade I will be taking a full backup of all the databases and all the files.

The forum may be offline for a few hours tomorrow if it goes quite bad.
If it goes terribly I will ask Xilo to restore it back to how it is now at this point in time.

Once we are updated to RC5, we can start re-building the site :)

In the meantime thatnks everyone for your posts and new topics!  It's nice to see life in this place again.

Thanks guys.

I am scared shitless to be honest but I've had this feeling every time I've had to do this and I've done it a few times now so I should know how to fix it if it goes wrong!

Good luck,

I'm looking forward to seeing what changes. Hopefully we'll get another 10 years out of it.

Well, the forum will stay mostly the same I think, there will be a new theme though and I am going to try and put the shout box on this page too. The front page will be what changes the most.  As for new features, there will definitely be a spell check option for posts but I doubt that I will be changing much else to be honest.

Just downloading the 12,000 + files to back up the site!

Database is huge too... 45mb!

That's going to be a right nightmare to restore if I fuck this up..

TBH I think I am going to go for the upgrade was soon as the backup is downloaded.

Good News!

We are now upgraded to RC5.

Some things have been broken during the upgrade, the ones I know about;

Youtube icon has gone from the post form, until it's fixed you can type;

[ youtube ] video id [ / youtube ] < without the spaces to post your video.

The arcade is gone (maybe I'll re-install it)
There is a bug in the moderators drop down menu
SSI.PHP is broken which is fucking up the front page
Blackrain theme fucked up

Apart from that it went well, which is good.. All the things above are minor things.
I've installed this theme for now because it looks cool and fixes a lot of other shit that blew up when I upgraded.

Thoughts on this theme?

Whatever theme we use I am going to use it as a basis for the new front end.

Cheers!

Oh, btw you can spell check your posts as well now... I have to see what else we can do :)

Great job, mate. Thanks a lot.

I somehow like the theme a lot. It feels lighter than the old one and a bit cleaner. Well it is hard to explain.  The layout of the header is nice (Top header incl. search, left header logo, right side has avatar info plus important links ...)

Loved the old one, too, though.

Hope fixing the listed bugs will not be hard - if I can help, just give a note.

Just realized, that our logo is too big for the theme (Refer to index.css, #logo, height-attribute, top-attribute).

Apart from that everything looks pretty good  :||

I've started to fix the bugs, the logo is fixed, code boxes were also broken, they are fixed, SSI.PHP is repaired now so the front page is fixed.

Hooray!

I like this theme too, it will suit the ideas that have been discussed for the new front page.

I hope everyone else likes it :)

Damn, that was pretty fast.

Yeah - theme rocks. Like it more and more ... The color-set is really eye-friendly I have to say.
After a hard work-week it still feels comfortable to look at the screen.

Thanks mate..

I spent a lot of time planning this and did a few test upgrades on my home system to minimise the risk but it was still scary!

Well there's always going to be something that does fit right with one of these upgrades but if its the odd graphic out of place thats not to bad. Losing the content would have been the worse nightmare, yeah you could restore the backup but it means more work to try and upgrade again at another time. Now your upgraded its just fixing other things

I saw the following error message on the front page:

Notice: Undefined index: mod_cache in /home/dbfinter/public_html/forum/Sources/Load.php on line 1549[/url]

Other than that, everything looks great ;D
