DBF Challenges Stats
« on: June 01, 2011 »
...or in my case: Proof Of Fail - It's seems like I am trying hard enough (because I fail...)

Here is an overview of my entries to DBF challenges so far...

DBF challenges stats

- Ranked 15th: WIP - ActionScript 3.0
- Ranked 4th: PV3D experimental clock - ActionScript3.0
- Ranked 5th: LowRes - ActionScript3.0
- Ranked 2nd: GrassVeins - Java
- Ranked 5th: p1nkP0ng - C++
- Ranked 3th: In 20 seconds... - PureBasic
- Ranked 6th: Blurred Pumpin - C++
- Ranked 1st: PieDraw - JavaScript
- Ranked 5th: Bouncing Circle Scroll - Java
- Ranked 5th: Sync'd Sine Scroll - PureBasic

This makes an average rank of ~5 rank :skint: FAIL

Should have added the total ranks to put this in a relation - too much work for now ;-)

What are your stats?

That's much more impressive than I've been lately, I haven't placed in the top three for a couple of years :)  I'll collate my stats soon and post them.

These days it's fucking hard to win a place in the top 3!!!  I really have tried hard in the last two but it looks like I'll have to up my game some more to stand a shadow of a chance..

I think it is a sign that the community of coders is getting more healthy.
Each time somebody blows the competition away it only strengthens the determined!

"If you punch me in the head with a superior product I will arise more powerful than you can possibly imagine"  sort of mentality.
Another big factor is simply time, real life often cuts down on the time we have to code and therefore the quality. Some people have days, others have an hour here and there.
Perhaps the best thing for the community has been an openess about how people created their effects after the demo is out. I've been glad to see people actively answering questions about how effects were created! Sure it is nice to keep a few trade secrets to yourself but really this community is about building and creating together more than blowing away the competition.

It is a great feeling to place in the top 3 but it is an even better feeling to know that you have educated your fellow coders!
The competitions are just meant to keep new people comming in and draw attention to the site and community which is the real "meat" here.

I've only entered 3 challenges so far, 2 of which I won. So minus this last challenge my average is a perfect 1st.   8)
Still nothing compared to Hellfires track record...  :o

I'm only really active with Flash/actionscript2.0 though, which is a rather high level language and a platform focussed on graphics, so sometimes I feel I have an unfair advantage in that regard. On the other hand as it's such high level, it runs a good deal slower then lower level languages.

I really like the fact that these challenges are so open, because in the end who (but us nerds) really cares how it was made; Creativity is where it's at!

Yup that's true. The overall quality is really good. Especially when you keep in mind that we have several challenges
a year. So we are no demoparty which is held only annually and which is visited by 1000s of ppl.

I don't think that the language itself is an advantage - after all everybody's free to use another language.
But you have graphical talent (which actually is an advantage) and naturally choose a tool which emphasises the creative process instead of a lowlevel bit-twiddling language.
Both approaches have their charm, though.

@ Hellfire
One day I'll make the venture into bit-twiddling as well though, right now I'm confined to Flash's capabilities. I already miss stuff like sound controll for example (beyond volume and panning). I'd really like to do something like deTuned for ps3, only with more interesting interaction.

Speaking about deTuned (by Farbrausch), Linger in shadows (by Plastic) rocked, Haujobb should really do a cool ps3 demo as well! ;)

Ok let's see:

BITS compo --- BITS#6969 - 20090828

A potential winner.  ;D Fuckings to Hostpapa for screwing up the servers during that time.

Halloween compo --- The Morgue Yard 1st/4

Luckily there weren't many entries, which was good for me.  ;)

Liquid compo --- Hippotro 2nd/18

Kirl beat me in the vote-off.  I hate you. :whack: Well, no, not really. Umm, maybe a little... J/k ;)

Destruction compo --- Bobfield Surfer 4th/10

4th places suck even more than landing an epic fail.  ::)

Wireframe compo --- Shortwired / Cardiac Arrythmias ? ? ?/15

Errr, since hope dies last, probably a blazing success again...  ^-^

Conclusion: Anywho, I'm on a downhill slope. I'm getting too old for coding. I'll stop now and start listening to Jazz instead.
Yeah. You wish. Wait for the next challenges to get your asses whooped again!!   O0

Hi Kirl, that server died long ago and the file mirror benny kindly provided has gone too.  I will see if I can fix that and attach the zip to the original demo post.  I hope I still have it!

That would be really cool, thanks! :)

Not sure about space, but meaby DBF can host all demo entries instead of only the top 3? Few things are as dissapointing as bad links in old, but interesting threads. With an average of <1Mb per entry that might be possible.

It is definitely possible and the upload limit per post is much more than 1mb, in fact at the moment it is just a little bit under 10mb.

Up to the user if they post thier file as a post attachment but that's exactly what I prefer where possible.

Some attachments were lost when the site crashed a couple of years ago too..  This site is automatically backed up by our hosts though and a full backup is usually taken just after the close of each comp.
