Glow effect
« on: November 16, 2011 »
I've been watching a few demos and I came across Mistrace by TBC and love the glow effect.

Does anyone know what the term for this glow effect is or perhaps how it is achieved?

Here's a youtube link

Thanks,

Raizor

Looks like a Fresnel shader or some kind of inverted ambient occlusion. No idea really...  :-\

It's often called "iteration glow" but I suppose there's no "proper" name for it.. The object in question is raymarched, and with each step, some value is added to the color. Eventually, it becomes white. Simple as that :)

At the bottom of this article, you can see some more clear examples (including artifacts, hehe).

Thanks for the displayhack.org link Ferris, I just watched a few cool vids along with a bunch of amazingly interesting articles, and there seems to be tons more where that came from!

 :updance:

Absolutely fantastic resource, you got any more like that?

Just out of interest Ferris, what causes the artifacts problem with Raymarching? Is it too big a step size?

Kirl: Thanks for suggestions, not quite right it seems but I may try those as could be interesting :)

Kirl: Well, DisplayHack is easy for me to whore since I'm an author there, hehe. I don't know of many sites quite like it other than Flipcode, but that's a bit dated..
Raizor: Yeah, it's step size. In raymarching there can be quite a big difference in step size between pixels (and different parts of the ray, for that matter) so the uneven-ness produce artifacts.

Pimp it, it's a treasure trove. I just read through the making of Numb Res by CNCD/Fairlight, I unsuccesfully searched the web for exactly that a short while ago!

I saw that on Smash's blog a while back. If you have seen his site, it's worth checking out.

Thanks Raizor! You know it's good when you plan to take a quick look and next thing you know, you're putting some new ideas into code. :)
