Game Competition?
« on: January 12, 2012 »
Anyone interested in a retro (or anything) game competition?

Really I am selfish, I just want new games to play.

Have you tried the ones from the two-button competition?

A retro / low res / limited control game competition would be cool.

I wouldn't be able to participate until February though.

There's some classics in the two-button competition.

The only reservation I have is that last time we ran the game competition somebody asked me if I thought that I was diluting the demoscene focus of the forum, I didn't happen to agree with that because games are released by sceners, even some comps have game categories so I'm interested in what other people think - if there's enough support for it then we may do something like this.

The main difference between a demo and game is some level of interactivity and some sort of score.
Interactivity is usually a good thing for demo-effects, too, as it is much more fun to play around with it than watching the same fixed timeline when running it.
Personally I like games with demo-like visuals very much, eg. +/-, Bittrip Runner or even Rez.
So I don't see a reason why you shouldn't ask sceners to do a small game...

Game comp would be cool, but meaby an interactivity challenge would help to keep things more general and demo related.
I'm up for both!  ;)

Demos always seemed to me like they were, well, demos of game engine technologies.  There are very few demos out there that couldn't be turned into games on their respective platforms without much effort, provided that you didn't have to adhere to a 4k limit or so.

Based on what I've learned from the current competition, I'll be making a cube-based game in the near future.
