have a dig around at a local antiques places.. you might be shocked what turns up!
I went and had a look around the YMCA shop, there was some pretty good stuff in there and I ended up donating an old table to them which I was going to throw away so it was a good idea.. Unfortunately they didn't have any solid wood desks but I'd definitely check them out again if I was looking to buy some furniture.
