HOMAGE TO THE SPINNING CUBE - VOTING
« on: May 21, 2012 »

Homage To The Spinning Cube!

It had definitely been too long since we had a challenge and Jim set a really great theme for this one!

The spinning cube is just about the most well known of all demo effects and you've come up with some really imaginative interpretations of the idea, they've all been a real pleasure to watch :)

So here we go then, a fine selection of 11 productions, all waiting for your votes!

Please pick your three favourites, they are great demos and you really should look at them all before you vote, the entrants deserve it!

Before you vote, a small word about the sponsorship.  The cash prizes are made possible by the generosity of the people who donated to the treasury.  Even though it is very generous to abdicate from taking your cash prize if you win, please do take it.

To keep things fair, here are the rules for voting and votes are checked by administrators.

Voting rules:

  • Please vote for 3 entries, you MUST vote for 3, not 2 or 1.
  • If you do not vote for 3 entris your vote will be removed.
  • Please do not vote for yourself or you will be disqualified.
  • Voting is open for 5 days from now.
  • In the event of a tie break, there will be a vote-off.
  • Please view all the entries before voting.

Good luck everyone!

Description :

When is a cube not a cube?  When it's a cube on a cube on a cube on a cube!  As well as the cool cube effect, the look of the intro is enhanced by Padman's easily identifiable oldschool style, you can really tell his demos apart from the others and as always with Padman this is a really nice intro.  Will it see him return to winning form?

Knurz says in his post for this entry that he was debating whether to post this or not, but I'm really glad that he did, especially as this is a first production in OpenGl it's really very good.  At first you think that it's just going to be a static background with a text writer, but then the cubes appear and form into a large pulsating cube in the centre!  The background also has a really wonderful cycling Dutch Colour scheme (in a good way), now let's see how it does in the voting!  Maybe Knurz can snatch a podium finish on his first attempt.

Description :

Another very nice piece of Flash bashing by Combatking here.  The classic vectorbob object of a cube defined by it's edges is displayed, although in this one the vectorbobs are nowhere to be seen - Instead we have an object that is made up of smaller roatating cubes, so we have 32 spinning cubes as a homage to the spinning cube!  That can't be bad :)

A Wild entry from Yaloopy, in the inimitable and classic ultrapaste style witness the fabulous construction of a sepia toned Clyde!  A welcome return indeed.. Will Yaloopy return to the podium after the voting though?  That's up to you!

When Kirl enters a challenge, you can bet that you're going to see something you didn't expect!  Shortly after the challenge opened, we were greeted with a wireframe teaser which had some ambiguous and really cool messages.. After the deadline passed, the real entry was revealed - a rather cool origami wild entry.  Genius!

Description :

Blacksheep is a relative newcomer to DBF and this is his challenge debut, this production is already No.2 in top of the month over at Pouet and it features a really nice collection of cube based OpenGl effects, accompanied by a rather brilliant tune which was also created by Blacksheep!  Brilliant stuff.

Description :

After winning the last challenge, Raizor is back with another really highly polished and excellent intro.  There's rather a lot going on in this intro, my favourite aspects of it are the way that the nice DBF logo is formed out of cubes in the beginning, and also the lovely rubbery cheddar menger sponge!  There's a lot to like about this though so give the sponge a spin and see if you think Raizor deserves another podium finish!

Description :

The long awaited return of Optimus to a DBF challenge and this time he's brought us another lovely looking effect... It's a spinning cube that is made up of a grid of many smaller cubes with very pretty shading and a pleasing pulsing effect.  The colour spectrum reminds me a little of thermal imageing, that's about as well as I can describe it but when you watch it for yourself you'll see how cool it is.

Ever watched the running man?  Combatking is clearly a fan, in this one he gives flash a good workout as well as the character made out of cubes!  Watch him run over a scrolling plane with some spectrum analyzer bars thrown into the mix for good measure.  Nice work in flash and for all CombatKing's fans there is an amusing text writer too.

Entry Name: Slowly and Slowing
Author : Jace StKnights

  Topic

Description :

Jace leaves his normal choices of weapon (an Atari ST or Web browser) to one side and despite the title, it's not really as slow as he makes out.  What we have here is a rather pleasing cube formation, several types of display from dots to transparrent are shown, the cube theme is extended further with the choice of font and incidental rectangular effects that are also happening in this great intro.

Description :

This has to be the first time I've ever heard a thin Lizzie song in a demo :)  It works really well though, it's kind of like guitar hero and makes you want to pick up the WII and have a blast on Warriors of Rock.  You'll see a wireframe cube with some light coloured dots moving along the edges rotating in time to the music over a flat wireframe backdrop that reminds me of frets on a guitar neck.  3 Entries from CombatKing then, a really great effort, maybe it's a tactic to win 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the same challenge!

Really sorry about that, I've changed the description now.
Thanx! (that's why I call it slowly  ;D In opengl it would have been so fast and powerful  ;) )

Just a question (should perhaps takes its own topic): why didn't you send a mp to all the registered users for the challenge (or the old ones) to participate or vote? There will perhaps have more people for it?!?
