2013 UDG CHALLENGE VOTING

UDG Challenge Voting Open!!!

This has been the first challenge that I’ve participated in for over a year.. I had a long time to think of a theme for the challenge and in hindsight I think that I picked quite a difficult one.   

It succeeded in putting off all but eight entrants, but the result is a very worthwhile and interesting batch of demos in a variety of styles, ranging from raymarching to 2D techniques, all have their own charms and they are all really entertaining. 

I’ve certainly enjoyed watching them and appreciate the time and effort that you’ve put into them.

The thing that is really encouraging is that we had three new participants who were not put off by the tricky theme which is surely a good omen for future challenges..

I already have a few ideas for the next one, but before we do that we need to decide the winner of this one, you’ll have three votes to choose the three productions which you think should be on the podium this time so without further ado, please read the voting rules and vote for your favourites![/b]

A small word about the sponsorship.  The cash prizes are made possible by the generosity of the people who donated to the treasury.  Even though it is very generous to abdicate from taking your cash prize if you win, please do take it.

An abstract entry featuring Penguins, Chevrons and Basketballs.  Several patterns are shown throughout the demo and the Penguin cannot apparently ever obtain the Basketball.

A large light sourced cube, A 3D Starfield and a chunky scroller all rendered out of 16 green blocks give this one a pleasing retro look.. Sort of like something you’d see on a vintage system with a more up-to-date effect, if you watch until the end you're treated to another effect too.

Nuclear’s competition debut treats us to a really smoothly rendered 3D scene of metablobs using the marching cubes algorithm, the nice choice of colours and UDG blocks enhances the effect.

Another debut entry, and an excellent one too with an original piece of music, smooth sine scroller and a waving plasma-like background which looks semi-transparrent due to the clever use of transparrency in the tilesets.

Who would have thought that you could fit MC Hammer and his parachute pants into just 16 little blocks?  In his own inimitable style Padman has done just that and thrown in a few other pleasing effects for good measure.

Using a selection of random blocks which are created at start-up, you can draw your own pattern and run it through a variant of the famous life algorithm.  The results are a pleasing selection of organic patterns which look like alien creatures.

You have to take your hat off to Canopy who used this challenge to create his first ever demo, you get an intro screen containing some large text which then progresses to a Green scroller over a silver bar background.

You will find a selection of well known effects including vectors and chequerboards in this entry, all software rendered out of round UDGs that are supposed to look like little LEDs.

Strangely, I was able to view all of the entries on my home laptop this time round. Excellent work everybody. May the best entry win.

Good luck everyone. Some really nice entries again for this compo. I couldn't come up with any interesting ideas at all and you guys seem to have really nailed lots of different themes and ideas. Great stuff!

Just got back from an evening out with the family, I had to log on and check the results though and what a buzz!!!  I am really happy to have come first this time, I didn't think I would and the same feelings are here this time that are there with every other challenge, whether I'm placed in the top 3 or not - It's a real pleasure and an honour to participate amongst you.

Congratulations to Combatking and Nuclear for 2nd and 3rd places respectively and to everyone who participated in the challenge and voting.
