[ATARI ST] Rodney vs. KFC

Hi guys,

This is something I have been working on lately. A little 'game' for the Atari ST/STE. The zip archive contains the exe to run from a hard disk and a disk image which can directly be used with an emulator like Steem or Hatari. Real hardware with CRT monitor is highly recommended! Because I am a lazy sod I will just paste the contents of the Readme here for further info.

Anyway, I hope someone will enjoy this little gem

Rodney vs KFC

A "game" for Atari ST / STE computers.


Story:
------
Rodney, step-triplet of Ruff and Rad Rogers just had his
compact disk collection nicked by the damn
Klepto Foreign Chickens (KFC) gang while on his way to the
Dullsville copy party. As the KFC have been terrorizing town
for way too long now Rodney decides to put an end to it.
So he heads back to his home, grabs his anti-chicken gun
and runs to the KFC hideout. Once arrived at the location
he notices that he only got 5 minutes and 30 seconds left until
the bus is departing for Dullsville. F**k! He needs to find and
fry all gang chickens fast and also needs to get all his disks
back in time.

System requirements and other blurb:

Atari ST(E) with 1 MB of Ram
Color monitor
TOS 1.00 to 2.06
Works from hard disk or floppy

STE version recommended, as it features ingame music
+ sound effects. ST version only has ingame sound effects,
which is kinda meh.

Available Keys:

Title screen:
[M] toggles ingame music on/off (STE only)
[ESC] quits to desktop

Ingame:
[Q] quits (to title screen)

Hey Padman!

I having some troubles to run it

I'm using steem emulator and downloaded the new one from sourceforge, it start loading and then go back to atari desktop, sometimes I get the game title screen and music but after few secs it goes back to desktop.

I'm using  "tos206.img" image and tried machine stf (1mb) or ste (4mb) without any luck.

Hey mate,

What a bummer. I have tested it on a real STF (TOS 1.02), STE (TOS 1.06), on STEEM, SainT and Hatari Emulators. It runs without any issues here, even on  Hatari for Android.  I've used TOS 1.62 for development, but also tested it successfully with TOS 2.06. I can only imagine that some emulator settings are causing this or that the 'all files in one' screws things up somehow. I'll check on the emulator settings and will compile a version with a separate data file and post it here.
Anyway, many thanks for testing it out. Really appreciated!

Ok, I just tried it again and I just can't get it to crash, even with the oddest settings.

Here's the setup I used on PC:

Steem.SSE.3.9.4.Win32.D3D
tos206us.img (find attached)
ST Model: STE
Memory Size: 1MB

Please note that pressing [ESC] quits to desktop from the title screen. So make sure to setup the joystick input properly as the game expects the fire button to be pressed to start. I've attached a screenshot of my settings, it uses the cursor keys and space when numlock is off to emulate the joystick.
I've also compiled a version with a separate data file, the new disk image (RODNEY_DISK_ONLY.zip) is also attached. This version will only work when started directly from the disk image, so don't copy the files to an emulated hard disk.

I've finally get it to work! Thanks for your help as well.

The problem was with mouse, if I move mouse on title screen the game close and go to atari desktop, when playing it works without any issues.

I'm not brave enough to get all disks in 5 min  , at least I killed some angry chickens and found the exit door

Glad you got it to work! You are right, when you move the mouse in the title screen it quits to the desktop. I ran the program like a thousand times, but actually never moved the mouse I'll look into it and fix that, thanks a lot for the hint!

Hi Terry,

Well, without Sprite Works I wouldn't have started this little project as I never really used GFA Basic in the 90s. But with all the example code provided it still is a great resource for anyone wanting to code games on Atari ST these days. I wish I had already known back in the day that it existed. Thank you very much for creating this extension and also many thanks for specially registering on this forum to leave a comment.
