Title: Show Your Desktop
Post by: Hotshot on February 08, 2007
I was going to show you my desktop but the problem is..My PNG image of desktop is 578KB and the Ms paint is shit as they dont open Png image...eh?

I was thinking that JPEG is low kb files than png....correct me if I am wrong.

png is smaller for pictures with few colours. Stuff like photographs have lots of colours and shades and are smaller as jpgs. And mspaint DOES open PNG files, or at least it should.

it depends on the software thats compressing the file I have software that can scrunch up a jpeg smaller than any png equivelent without much loss in picture quality. but ms paint is absolutely diabolical at compression and when you drop the number of colours down to a lower colour depth paint will choose the worst colours possible. I use paint shop pro but there are better ones out there

jpg is usually smaller - the better programs(PS, PSP) will let you input the quality of the image you want - the lower the quality usually the smaller the compressed file.  If you want a good free program to do this stuff dl GIMP opensource grafix program much like Photoshop and in some ways better.

To me Slinks, this computer is simply a tool, nothing more :D

It is eye-gaugingly ugly! The '98 blue and grey is better looking than the ultra bright mocking glare of the big chunky buttons. I am miffed I can't install a black theme without ruining everything else, but those are the breaks.

you really got something against XP huh, I never saw anything wrong with it a lot better than linux now thats one os that can be easily broken in the hands of an amateure

I just think it's a travisty, and that mircosoft should make an alternate version of all their os's that cater for people with more than one brain cell. In fact, he is a list of why Xp sucks the anus when compaired to '98.

* Big chunky buttons and colours that cause permanant damage to the retinas
* All important system files have to be manually un-hidden when on a new machine. They were hidden to protect the computer from morons with a delete key.
* Same goes with file extensions. Just leave me alone, if I don't want file extensions, I'll tell you!
* Old DOS programs need system tweeks to get them to run, and some won't work right at all.
* The 'new programs installed' speech bubble that pops up each time you open the start menu after you install something. Like no shit, I'm aware I just installed something!
* The 'firewall is on' speech bubble. That WAS the general idea!
* Having to disable the desktop cleanup wizard. Almost as if I was incapable of cleaning it myself.
* Not being able to rename the recycle bin without modding the registry. What is that about?

I'm sure I could go on, but I really don't feel like it!

I seem to be the only one here who uses a modern operating system. Dual screen (24" horizontal and a 21" vertical monitor) with multiple desktop software. I used to keep my desktop very clean and tidy, but since moving to a new PC I find I look at it very rarely and so stopped caring. I think it's because I never shut it down now, just sleep, so I end up having loads of apps open at once.

Having moved on from XP almost 5 years ago, when I now encounter it I find it terribly out dated. From Powershell, to the sound mixer to the Start+arrow-keys-window-moving-thing; I find XP unusable without this stuff.

Shockwave: I like how you arranged your icons into little battalions of apps and folders and how your installed games perfectly match this scheme  ;D
