I cant wait to see what the PS3 has to offer homebrew-wise. What with it being the most high tech of the next gen consoles it would be a shame if there wasnt a NetYaroze/Yabasic equivelent unless Linux is gonna be it.
Title: Re: PS3
Post by: Clanky on March 12, 2007
For sure! A PS3 yabasic... wow - imagine!

But I think Sony have introduced Linux into it as an oporating system so it's like a computer? *correct me if I'm wrong*
Title: Re: PS3
Post by: rain_storm on March 12, 2007
Yeah I think that it wont take too long before some pplz get homebrew software runnin on it then we might see a PS3 demoscene emmerge

I dont think PS 3 will be SOLD OUT due to HIGH Price !!! When PS 3 price down in Xmas then people might buy it! maybe!
Title: Re: PS3
Post by: rain_storm on March 22, 2007
I'd say they will be sold out at least for a short while there is a high demand for it even though most people here dont wanna fork out for it straight away but remember how many years it was before PS2 dropped in price i think it took more than two years here just to drop a little bit so whats the point in holding off two or more years? they definately wont be going cheaper by xmas and I know I have better things to spend money on come the festive season I expect to have one as soon as GTA, MGS or Gran Turismo are available.

In celebration of the release of the PS3, I managed to bring my Dreamcast back to life.....
Which generally means a weekend of Soul Caliber ahead....

I'm a happy bunny
Title: Re: PS3
Post by: Shockwave on March 23, 2007
Enjoy it Graham :D

And they don't seem any heavier than an xbox 360 :)

In work today there were two great big metal cages full of PS3's, I'd say there were several hundred units there. I only had two to deliver today myself.
Title: Re: PS3
Post by: Hotshot on March 23, 2007
Soul Caliber is ace on dreamcast ( I still even kept my dreamcast! )
Looking at software of PS 3 games....I still dont understand why Virtua tennis is £49 and Motorstorm £39 (should be otherway around?). XBOX 360 for Virtua tennis is £39 where PS 3 of Virtua tennis is £49! ffs

Games arent worth that much as I would be happy to pay at least either £20 or £30.
For budget price should be like £15 to £20.

C64 Budget price was Best things ever happend and no one couldnt even beat £1.99 or £2.99 a game.....that was FAB !
Title: Re: PS3
Post by: Shockwave on March 23, 2007
There's no way you could develop a ps3 game and sell it as cheaply as that nowadays Hotshot...

The best advice if you have a limited budget is to get pre-owned games I'd say.
Title: Re: PS3
Post by: rain_storm on March 23, 2007
A local games shop has an offer advertised that will sell PS3 cheaper if you trade your PS2 as part payment that might buy a game or two
Title: Re: PS3
Post by: Jim on March 23, 2007
The stores here will sell you a PS3 for $750 (instead of $999) if you trade in an XBox or PS2 and 20 games.

Jim
Title: Re: PS3
Post by: mike_g on March 23, 2007
:o Thats a lot of games they want.
Title: Re: PS3
Post by: Jim on March 23, 2007
It is shocking really.  They'll trade in for about $10-$20 a game most of the time, and then seconds later it's on the shelf for between $29 and $60.

One retailer here is offering it for $950 if you also buy a game.  Another is offering a game and a 2nd controller in the pack for $1050.  I don't think any of them yet come with a completely free game.  They must have been given so little margin in the $1000 price tag.  I'd really like one...

Jim
Title: Re: PS3
Post by: Shockwave on March 24, 2007
I'd like one too and the game trade ins... It shows that the shops make most of the markup in the games and sod all on hardware.

Sony are sweating on this console selling well.. Apparently they have invested so much money in gaming and they have been lagging behind.

If I am typical of the market then they should worry.. I don't think I'll be buying one of these myself unless Gran Turismo and Grand theft auto is seriously amazing on it and even then I'd probably wait a year or two, unless someone gives me a free one :) I just don't think a games console can be worth so much money can it?
Title: Re: PS3

Sony saying that the Price drop wont be until NEXT YEAR!
I do like motorstorm and formla 1( I wish they did bring on XBOX 360 but good news is AIRCOMBAT 6 is coming to XBOX 360   Lovely ! )

GTA 4 Screenshot or Video will be show on 30TH March (The Graphics will be slimair as Table tennis game or maybe little abit better)

GT 5 (racing car game) wont be out until 2007 or 2008 at the early

my (amazing) strategy: buy a PS3 from a japanese site, where the yen equivelent is £250 (the retail price in japan). With the cost of a power addapter and p+p, it will still be cheaper! Success!

@Loopy - From what i've heard, the different platforms will have some exclusive content which could be made available for other platforms sometime later as downloadable.

@Jim - Nice one, did you get a game with it?
Title: Re: PS3
Post by: zawran on March 26, 2007
I am very happy with mine so far. I have bought Motorstorm and Resistance: Fall of Man and both titels are really great. Motorstorm is fast paced desert race with all kinds of vehicles and is a lot of fun especially in multiplayer. Resistance is a first person shooter, and I was a bit uncertain that I would like fps games on a console, I had never tried before and always believed that a keyboard and mouse is needed. But I was pleseantly surprised and it only took about an hour to get a lot more comfortable with the controls. My brother and I played Resistance for 13 straight hours only taking a short break to get something to eat. :)

@zawran:
I am getting jealous. Sounds really cool - but un / fortunately - no time and money
for sitting 13 hrs non-stop in front of a game on whatever console it runs.

Nevertheless - sounds liks big fun ... hope still visit this board regulary ;)
Title: Re: PS3
Post by: zawran on March 26, 2007
It wasn't ment to be 13 hours, but once we got started and we got used to the controls, we just wanted to see what would come next. Fortunately it was on saturday and my brothers girlfiend wasn't home, so we had the time :) But yeah, its also rare that I have so much time in one sitting to do something like that.

Resistance would be the main reason right now to get a ps3, it's made by insomniac games, so it's gotta be good!
Title: Re: PS3
Post by: zawran on March 26, 2007
Its the best first person shooter I have every had the pleasure to play. It might just be the PS3 fever talking, but seriously its really, really good.
Title: Re: PS3
Post by: Jim on March 26, 2007
I got Sonic and Fall of Man.  There are hardly any games available here.  Toys R Us had a really good deal on (console, 2 games, $900 vouchers for $1100), but they've totally sold out of games and it'll be weeks before they get a lot more.  I couldn't imagine getting the console on its own - it doesn't even come with a demo disk, you have to download it all!
Only Big W here seems to be taking the launch seriously, KMart and Target all have some games and cosoles in but they look like they don't care.  2 display boxes and a handful of games.  No posters, no standees, nothing.  Harvey Norman had a huge display, but no games, no price list or special offer, and they had the music turned up too loud, so I left there quickly.

Only comment on the games so far - for some reason the sound in the FMV at the start of Sonic is all stuttery which was a really bad start :(  The console itself looks beautiful and weighs a ton.

Now I need to save up for a 1080p telly, 576i looks just like PS2.

I heard the new sonic was really shit, and I mean really. This is coming from hardcore sonic fans like myself. We want to like the game, but... it sucks.
Title: Re: PS3
Post by: Jim on March 27, 2007
It's shit.  I agree.  I might persevere to see where I can get to.  The loading times are really annoying.

Good thing is, if you have decent broadband, is there's gigs of free stuff to download from Sony, and you can download it all in the background while you're playing.

Jim
Title: Re: PS3
Post by: zawran on March 27, 2007
576i isn't great looking I will agree. Fortunately I just got my HDMI-DVI converter plug today, so I can run it in 1080p on my 24 inch lcd I usually use for the pc. The two games I have so far only supports 720p, but its much better looking that the 576i I was looking at until now via the composite input. During the weekend I was playing with my brother on his 720p dlp projector, and it really looked great and even with split screen during Resistance, we still had plenty of pixels to provide us with a decent looking screen.
Title: Re: PS3
Post by: Shockwave on March 27, 2007
That's interesting that the resolution is getting better on the ps3, I have been so out of the loop for so long now, I hadn't even considered that the screen resolution was getting better.

When the first next gen consoles came out, dreamcast, ps1 etc it used to be much vaunted how many triangles they could draw in a second, now I guess that as the consoles are more powerful, the resolution is becomming more important..
Title: Re: PS3
Post by: Jim on March 27, 2007
Xbox360 was 1080i (1920x1080 interlaced) and now I think it does 1080p (1920x1080 progressive).  PS3 goes up to 1080p.  Interlaced means that it displays the even lines of the screen on one frame, and the odd lines on the next frame.  Progressive means it shows all 1080 lines every 24/25/30th of a second.  Normal PAL tellys are 576i - that's 288 lines each frame @30fps.  So there's a long way to go up with a new telly.  The composite output of PS3 is pretty good - I'm going to get a component cable and see if I can persuade my kit to do 576p, but I'm not too hopeful.  Should get a slightly better picture though.  Theoretically, component can handle 1080p.

Hey Jim

Are you happy with Playstation 3?

I just saw Second hand PS 3 at game shop selling at £399 ( just like Amiga price good old day)

Title: Re: PS3
Post by: Jim on April 03, 2007
So far it's cool.  Hardly any games available for it here though.  And I'm waiting for Sony to send me my blu-ray edition of Casino Royale to try out the player.  I got a component cable and the picture improved a bit, but I need to upgrade all my other kit to get the best out of it (TV, AV Amp).  It really has so much potential I want to see where Sony are going with it.  Perhaps if you're short of cash you can hold off buying the console until something spectacular happens.

Title: Re: PS3
Post by: Jim on April 04, 2007
You can install a lot of Linuxes.  Gentoo, Ubuntu, Red Hat, SUSE - apparently the basic PPC Linux Kernel has been taken off death row and added to the 'officially unsupported' list, due to PS3.  Is that a good thing I wonder?!

Jim
Title: Re: PS3

You will be able do programming in PS 3 if Linuxes.  Gentoo, Ubuntu, Red Hat, SUSE allow you do so.

Title: Re: PS3
Post by: Jim on April 04, 2007
Right, it's a full blown Linux and you have access to gcc and a number of dev kits to get at the CPU cores.  The biggest pain is that you can't get at the display processor, so it only has framebuffer graphics...
Also, the wireless network doesn't work yet, though I think Sony plan to fix this.

The killer app for PS3 is to make it a media centre.  Until the wireless works, and someone can port a decent media player that can run in TV modes, Linux is a bit futile.  Work is afoot...http://freevo.sourceforge.net/screenshots.html (http://freevo.sourceforge.net/screenshots.html)...yes please!

Long weekend coming up - I might have a go at loading it.  I partitioned the PS3 drive ready for it before I did anything.

Yes well, as it says in the wikipedia article, it's more like one CPU and 6 SPE that you can code on. The SPE are a hell to code, because they have only 128k of accessible memory each, for both code and data. You're forced to do DMA transferts from the main RAM by hand to "feed" them, and DMA transferts back to main memory to get the results... So, it's really challenging to get anything out of it...  :)

Though the linux install and its Cell+framebuffer access could mean... raytracing on ps3 ;) That'd be a real challenge...

Untill the price drops to 150 USD and I can play some shmups on it I'll pass. I'll just continue using my Wii to play games from the mid 90's. Playing with my Wii behind closed doors is nothing that I like admitting to however.

Title: Re: PS3
Post by: Jim on January 20, 2008
I formatted my disk to make sure I can put Linux on it at some point, but no, I haven't installed another OS yet.  The homebrew people managed to get the 3d hardware going, but Sony shut that off (intentionally or unintentionally) with firmware 2.10.  If you really want 3d in Linux and you have a lower firmware, then don't upgrade.  But as with the PSP, new games insist on the latest firmware.
www.ps2dev.org (http://www.ps2dev.org) have a lot of good information.

Thanks Jim, I've not partitioned mine yet and I'm not sure if I'm going to lose everything when I do although there's not anything terribly important it would be a bit of a pain so I'll wait untill I can get an external drive and back it up. My PS3 is fully updated atm.

I've D/Ld yellow dog 5.0 which took 10 or 11 hours, strange things went on, at one point it had downloaded -150% and later it was up to 350% of 3.3Gb and now it's on my HD it says it's 1.1Gb.
Title: Re: PS3
Post by: Jim on January 20, 2008
Weird!

When you re-partition the disk, you'll lose anything on the disk - save games, downloads, etc.  Could be a pain which is a good reason to do it up front even if you don't plan to install Linux yet - which is what I did.

I suspect people will find another way to initialise the 3d hardware (RSX) - either that or Sony will provide an accelerated Linux driver...

Jim
Title: Re: PS3
Post by: Stonemonkey on January 20, 2008
Had some problems burning it, nero reckoned there were problems with block size or something and it looks like it's only written 1.1Gb to the disc so I'm going to download it from somewhere else (although can't remember where I got it the first time but the % complete going into negative numbers might give it away).
