Post by: Shockwave on April 17, 2007
AMIGA CLASSIC PROMO COMPETITION!

This time the competition is really different, and also the prize is much more valuable than normal.

We are looking to you to help make your community a success!!!

Here's your task.. Make an intro to promote the new "find a coder" facility of this community!!

There is a twist though..

Please visit this site;

FLASHTRO (http://www.flashtro.com/list.php?c=art)

And pick one of the classic Amiga Cracktros, your task is to take the language and API of your choice and either make a perfect conversion of one of those cracktros, or take one of those cracktros as your inspiration and do a new take on it.

Before the rules, I want to apologise that this time it has to be exe only as this intro is going to be spread to promote the forum. Next time we will do something that the Yabasic guys can get stuck into as well!

Rules;

There are some great prizes. In fact to reflect the extra effort needed in this competition the top 3 placed people will each get a copy of;
COBRA (http://www.squeakyduck.co.uk/index.php?categoryid=29)

Please note that if any of the winners already own Cobra, Graham K has agreed to upgrade them to Cobra3d for free. Thanks Graham!

All Valid Entries get +2 Karma.

Good luck and enjoy the comp :D If previous ones are anything to go by, this one will be great!!!!

Hi shocky.

can i shear this compt , by using my old demo 'prophecy2Demo' it was ported from www.flashtro.com.

i will change the scrolling text , but the big problem is it will not work in everyone's system because as you know it uses my OgreMagic which requiers a good hardware GFX card.

Thanks for the support Emil :)
All executable Windows entries are welcome, I will pick the ones which are most highly voted to use to promote the forum! Maybe something could be done to make it more compatible :)

Would different gfx in the same style be acceptable as in diff logo ?
Does it have to be cracktro ? Can it be intro ?

thanks shocky.  :)

It must be listed in the cracktros listings in flashtro, these are famous cracktros that will hopefully attract more interest and also insisting that it is a conversion or update of something on Flashtro will make comparison easy.

Like;

Here's my Prod.

Here is the Flashtro Version.

Of course, if anyone wants to re-draw the gfx / base a tune on an original that's cool :) Ripping is not compulsary.

Nice, now I will have to dig the IDE out again. Great challenge theme. I already have a good idea about which one I will be replicating.

- You agree that the finished intro will be used to promote the new requests forum and will be spread to other places on the internet.

Are there any preferred 'DBF+GVY' logos knocking about that we can use to promote the site? I'm not much of a graphician (logo creation, for me, means typing the word into PSP and applying a gradient).

 :o !!
you have read in my mind or my posts about my project of Amiga cracktros remakes  ??? this post (http://dbfinteractive.com/index.php?topic=1599.msg25949#msg25949) or this one (http://dbfinteractive.com/index.php?topic=1715.0)
I already tried my first (not yet fully finished) : from http://www.flashtro.com/page.php?id=62
skidrow robocod (http://cyberpingui.free.fr/skidrow_robocod.zip) (updated)

but I not thinking about a contest...but It'll be cool to see results (I hope on the sharing of the sources  :P )

some questions :
where to post entry ? I done my intro before the contest, so I need to update the scrolltext...

how many intros we can submit ?

Quote
You may use media (gfx+music)
for gfx, ok, but for the music, some intros use exotic format and not all mods are converted in standard module or ahx. I found BP player, but for Sid, dm... more difficult

some intros are already win32 ported :
http://www.intro-inferno.com/production.php?id=89
http://www.intro-inferno.com/production.php?id=38
http://www.intro-inferno.com/production.php?id=2428

new port possible ?
Title: Re: CLASSIC AMIGA FORUM PROMO COMPETITION!
Post by: Shockwave on April 18, 2007
Bbear;

Nice conversion :)

You should post a new topic in this, the community projects forum with the title;

CLASSIC COMP : SKID ROW ROBOCOD

If the intro uses non standard music format, you can either get a compatible replay routine or make one, or get a musician to convert it or pick another intro!!

Of course, please feel free to do a conversion of something already ported, maybe you can add something different to it :)

Add as many as you like mate. You can post 100 if you want to!

Sledge, there are some logos around here, or you can always adapt a logo in the original cracktro or even use the original logo as it is :)

Cheers for the questions!

And Roly, I will PM you after you finished your birthday celebrations :)

some questions :
where to post entry ?

I also created a party named "DBF: Classic Amiga".  Feel free to post them as well and select "DBF: Classic Amiga" as party, "oldschool demo" as section.
Please note: votes there are not taken into account for this contest as it's just hosting files, not organizing this contest :)

Now, about the convertion itself: wow, i really like it!

Cheers,
druid

Would combining several different cracktros fit into the rules? There are so many great ones, and so many that have great parts, I would love to make a compilation of my fav effects.
Title: Re: CLASSIC AMIGA FORUM PROMO COMPETITION!

I think , if we include the source code of each entry , it would be nice and let others learn from our forum.

just my thought.
Title: Re: CLASSIC AMIGA FORUM PROMO COMPETITION!
Post by: Shockwave on April 19, 2007
Tetra, you could do that I guess, or you could make several entries if you want :)
Title: Re: CLASSIC AMIGA FORUM PROMO COMPETITION!

Just another quick question -- I took the rule about linking to here and flashtro.com to mean that there should be some live links in the intro itself. So I've included a logo from each site to click on which were, of course, nicked from each site. Is it going to be kosher to include them? (I don't know how closely this place and flashtro are associated so if I have to ask over there then just say.)

Here's a (temporary) in-progress screeny to show you the kind of thing I'm talking about. (You can see that my effort is more of a pastiche or homage than a pixel-perfect remake -- just the bigger greets text and the music to do!)

@Sledge:

Screenie looks cool. The idea of clickable logos is great IMHO. Thought about
something like this, too. I had in mind that a little start gui pops up, where you
can normally set the resolution and stuff and there I wanted to place some
textlinks.

But your idea is neat, too. How does you approach it ? If you demo is running
fullscreen and somebody clicks on it with the mouse - does the demo end and
the browser pops up or how do you want to manage it ?!

Anyway, interesting marketing idea ;)

I'm using Blitz3D so am pretty much stuck with the default behaviour -- fortunately when you launch a URL from a fullscreen B3D app' it minimizes and continues to run, which is exactly what I want. To start with I just ran it windowed but it really needs to hog the system (ie go fullscreen) to keep the display smooth, so I've been quite lucky there. I like the idea of having the links in a gui pop-up but having the logos in the main demo gave me something to talk about in the scroller!

just my 2 cents: what if URL changes?  or is unavailable?

ANyway, screenshot looks great.

bbear: what about uploading your intro on intro-infernro?
Title: Re: CLASSIC AMIGA FORUM PROMO COMPETITION!
Post by: benny! on April 20, 2007
Generally, if you publish something via the internet you should take care
of that it stays there and the url stays the same.

Ok. In reality it is of course different - and it seems that there are some
dead links now and then. Although sometimes people refer to the new
url - in the end - nothing is for the eternity.

So, as far as it belongs for the compo and the existence of the two boards
I think we can dare the risk that those urls might not be available in some
years anymore ...

Just my 2cts.

That's a great idea Sledge, rest assured that this domain name is safe for at least the next 9 years!!

Of course, you can feel free to include a link / text in any way that you like.
As far as this place and Flashtro being linked are concerned, musashi9 is a member of this forum and I am a member of Flashtro and that's about it. :)

I added Flashtro as a link in the front page of this site a long time ago, it's a brilliant place.

And I am so miffed :) I was going to convert that one Sledge :D

Never mind, I have a plan b!

Thanks to those who posted kind words about my screenie. The main reason I registered here was because the existing users looked like real scene enthusiasts, yet without one iota of elitism -- maybe I shouldn't be surprised to stumble across a scene-related community that does not turn its nose up at those who prefer high level languages, but I am!

@Shockwave
My main concern for the logos was that I didn't want to use them then find that their respective site owners were miffed that I hadn't asked. You're cool about it, so that's good, and musashi9 is a member here so making sure he is too should be straightforward.

@Druid
I'm glad you raised the issue of URL expiry because if we're announcing the new forum feature then it should be made clear to people whether the information is current or not. I will probably stick a date at the start of the demo so anyone who gives it a look in, say, twenty years will know not to expect the links to be valid!
Title: Re: CLASSIC AMIGA FORUM PROMO COMPETITION!
Post by: Shockwave on April 22, 2007
Sledge, there are some places one the net that are really a pain in the arse, we've always tried to do the opposite here. There is still eliteism in the scene but it usually comes from the people who have no talent :) Most famous scene people I've talked to are really nice guys.

I'm glad you registered and I'm looking forward to seeing your cracktro conversion :) Subzero is a member of Intro-Inferno and posts there often, he's the guy who did the music in that cracktro so I am sure that he'll appreciate the conversion :)

Theres never any bitchin here in fact you probably found that out already. I hate over-opinionated asswipes that never seem to help anyone, too busy with their own running commentry. Criticism is alright, but only when it is constructive criticism. I mean you cant please all the people all of the time but some people sure can piss off the majority (over time).
