I have noticed today that some topics on this forum (not all) seem to be taking too long to generate, one in particular is in the coding challenge thread.
The page has taken up to 28 seconds to generate for me.
On the other hand, most of the other topics seem to be generating very fast, most below half a second.
You can see the time taken to generate the page if you scroll down right to the bottom after the page is displayed.
I've optimised all the tables today and emptied out all the unnecessary logs, I've checked the host to see what's going on.

It all looks healthy, the only recurrent error in the server log is that I have not created a favourites icon for the board for when someone bookmarks the site. If anyone wants to draw one and attach it to a reply here I will add it in the right place.
At the moment I am a little bit baffled by the slow speed.
Is it just me or are others experiencing this?

Yes mate, Im experiencing mega slow down on a 4MB broadband connection. Saying that, it isnt too bad that ive just noticed you've removed a theme. But there is defineatly something afoot, as yesterday had no troubles at all.
Perhaps, limit the sizes of that the pages can get to, especially in the crazy hanger. Say, 100 posts and then close it off and start anew one. I also recon, it's now a good call, to add the code Snippets category.
With the long topics with lost of replies, it's nearly impossible to get them to show. I keep getting 404 page timed out. So i recon, good idea for next time a code compo is arranged, that the replies of entries be enetered as a solo entry and not as a reply, Then after the deadline you can then transfer them over into the code snippets areas.
Just a thought, that may help ya.
Cheers and all the best,
Clyde.

By the way, if you want to make an icon for the board to be displayed in peoples favourites list, it should be named favicon.ico
Ta.
Nobody else has asked for a code snippets forum Clyde, I already said that I'd add one if it was wanted by more people, I know you've asked for one about 6 times now, I did hear your request the first time and I'm still waiting for feedback on it from some of the other members, so perhaps this is a good time for them to reply and support the idea. If there's support for it and a sensible way in which it can be integrated then I'll add it. I am doubtful though. There are already forums for several languages and I don't like the idea of having a non language specific forum which I think will make things hard to find.
But hey, I am not dismissing it out of hand, it won't be the first time I've ever been wrong.
So what I'd like to say on a code snippets forum is that if people want one, please post and say you want one and how it can be implimented. I know you want one Clyde.
Thanks for the feedback on the page creation times, there does definately seem to be some correlation between the amount of posts in a topic and the speed that the page is generated. This sucks and it's almost as slow as Pouet is sometimes and they have much more info.
Fortunately I can split the topics so I might end up doing that to solve the problem, however it's not an ideal solution and I fear that there is a bigger problem. There is no way that this forum should be taking this amount of time to generate topics with a hundred replies, that's not a lot of replies really.
I noticed from the web stats that we've been spidered by Google today and their webbot has used about 11mb of bandwidth, this *may* be one reason for the slowdown but I can't see 11 mb making a huge difference unless it's something to do with the way the bot crawls through the data tables and shared access.

Mate, my lips are sealed. And it's time I got that Chinese.
For the not so with-it people, whats spidering all about dude.
Cheers and all the best,
Clyde.

I'll add a poll and we'll do it that way, I do appreciate the suggestions though Clyde so take it the right way :)
Funny that, I'm having Chinese myself tonight.
[edit]
When you are spidered by a search engine, it sends a web bot that crawls through the information on your website, storing information for the search engines.
I submitted the site to about 30 search engines following my topic to see if I should advertise the site.

I'll email my webspace providers and see what the problem is.
Thanks Rbraz.
Nb. Clyde, Queries are normal, they are accesses into the SQL database and they are needed to make the pages.

The problem is not the forum, it's a temporary problem with the host, I got this back from the customer support team (they only took 45 mins to reply, fair play to them).
Hi Nick,
First, I apologize for the slow response time.
After confirming that your website is currently responding as expected, I
studied your server's server logs and it seems that there were several hours
of increased load due to two particular accounts that share that server. I
will ask our system administrator to evaluate whether these two accounts
should be transferred to another server.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Best regards,
Lisa Goldberg

I would like to also apologise for the slow response time, I've been working like billyo to try and get the forum running quick again today.
