Title: Synth Music Test
Post by: Rbz on May 24, 2007
As you know, I'm working on a music player using gm.dls samples, and here a first preview, no gfx added sorry.

I'm not a musician, so there's only two pages of "music" and no sound effects added yet.
Packed with crinkler 1.0a

Please tell me if it work Ok for you.

Works fine here, too. Good work!

Works here xp, sp2 Rbraz.

But I can hear noise in there (crackling) and I dont think its a volume problem so maybe you arent clearing the sound buffers to zero before using them? Just a guess.

Worked for me too :)

Nice Bassline! hehe, is this for use in 4kbs?

Yes, is my intention to use it for 4kb prods in the near future  O0

Very weird, I'm clearing (ZeroMemory) all buffers used, just to make sure the problem isn't with volume I have attached one version with low volume for you to test.

nice one rbraz!

works fine without distorsions here mate  :goodpost:
Title: Re: Synth Music Test

Rbraz, distortionson first one, tested on two platforms, but second one is clear. It must be a volume thing. So problem solved but I have bad news. I ran the first one you posted several times and once it failed to play anything. It may be rare but you should know just incase it happens on a compo machine.

BTW Im going to Riverwash 2007 and they take remote entries, they have 4k and 256b so if you want to submit something, I could represent you and make sure it runs on compo machine etc.

Thanks Chris, I'll check it again, you know, when we code those tiny prods we always compromise (hack)  a lot so it's not a surprise if it stop working on some PC config. , I can live with that  :)

About Riverwash, sounds cool, if I can find some free time (and inspiration) to work on a tinyprod  I'll contact you for sure  :)

@Chris:

That's a nice offer, Chris. Thanks a lot. I'll will keep that in mind. Maybe I can finish something to
release there. Though, I never heard about riverwash and looking at its amount of competitions
I hope there will be enough entries at all ( e.g. splitting up 4k-comp into 2 sub categories .. )

This Riverwash first year because Symphony has closed down. This is the only real Polish demoparty now.
I worry only that there wont be enough newskool entries as Poland is a bit hard core. However rumour is that
ps, dipswitch, sirgarbage, preacher and a few others are going to be there. It could go either way...I think with
remote entries it could attract entires from America or even Japan.

Ok, I have decided to enter this party, probably it's my best chance to enter in one demo party because there's no one near to me.

I guess that 03 months is enough for me to make a prod and it will be 4kb  ;)

Title: Re: Synth Music Test

Cool. Looking forward to it. I am still undecided if I can enter. Atm I am quite
busy. But will see ...

Not sure if I will have time to enter riverwash, I've spent too much time on this 4k music player, but finally I've something usable, and I'm really proud about it :)

About the music, hmmm  ;D , this is what happen when you give the right tool to the real musician, and this is just a music test !

Awesome stuff.

@rbraz:
cool coding and very impressive to see what how far you pushed your tiny music player. lots
of bytes left to finish a 4kb !!!

Title: Re: Synth Music Test

Well done Rbraz, sounds good. How big is it? How did you do it? Any tricks?
Sounds like small clicks on some instruments here when the volume is loud you can hear it through headphones. Maybe its just my system though.

Chris
Title: Re: Synth Music Test
Post by: Rbz on July 22, 2007
Thanks dudes  :)

@chris: the player with this nice music data = 950 bytes, and that music use 4 patterns the max patterns could be 8 pat.

There's no big trick on byte usage, the player use 4 channel but I need to use 2 bytes for music data except when there's no note to play which in this case is one 1 byte. The first byte is the note and second byte have the sample to play and volume control.

The big trick here is to let the musician use their own music tracker, I'd provide the gm samples, the final file should be saved in .xm (fasttracker II format), and I use a special tool to convert back to my own format. This is really good, because we save a lot of time on music development and make the music artist happy :)

That's all, btw I can add directsound effects but not for now, I need to think a tiny and versatile way to use it.

Cheers,

First of all hello to all!
I'm Positron, I left the amiga scene in 1993 (perhaps 92). But I never stoped to look Intros and Demos. Today mainly on PC.

the player with this nice music data = 950 bytes, and that music use 4 patterns the max patterns could be 8 pat.

I'm mightily impressed! Nice work.

Title: Re: Synth Music Test
Post by: Rbz on February 04, 2008
Here's the first preview of my soft synthesizer:

http://www.rbraz.com/temp/4k_SoftSynth_Test.rar

Not yet optimized, but the player, with all features enabled, takes around 1040 bytes and that 30 seconds song occupies around 70 bytes.

Player features:
-4 different oscillators: Sine, Saw, Square and Noise
-Envelope (Attack/Decay)
-Special Drum mode
-Tremolo effect
-Vibrato effect
-Volume control
-Cutoff and resonance filters
-Delay effect

ToDo:
-Distortion effect

I'm still looking for a good, "tiny specialist", musician to try it and help me to make it better, in the mean time I will be trying to learn how to make music myself  ;)

it totally from scratch or does it base on any existing
code?

@benny!: It was coded from scratch, just directsound output code is the same used on gmdls version.
I have started coding it in November 2007 and it's not yet finished but all things that I have learned during the development of the old gmdls version helped me a lot.

This has one of the nicest sounds of a small synth I have heard.

I know that a lot of musicians really hate writing synth songs though so here's wishing you all the luck in the world to find someone who can do it justice.
Title: Re: Synth Music Test

Yeah. C'mon musician ... even if the composing and
testing might be a pain in the a*** - but the result
can be really cool and guess it could be nice for a
scene musician to be part of a 4kb intro ???

Maybe I need to start coding an intro to motivate a musician to help me with music...

If you are prepared to do a joint product I can recommend ampli or strobe from Titan both of whom are very capable with tiny synths. Hang out in #titandemo on efnet. The best way I found was to create all the graphics first so the music guy knows you are serious and its worth his effort to learn your tool.

But hang on you are in Ravebusters and there are like 6 musicians there! Are you saying that Daxx etc are not interested?
Title: Re: Synth Music Test
Post by: Shockwave on February 07, 2008
it would strike me as really strange if none of the musicians in Ravebusters would support thier only coder, especially as you just released that lovely music disk for them.

Ampli is indeed great at writing tiny songs, also a good personal friend of mine and I could ask him if you cant get help from your group.

Nope, I can't say that, all that I know is that they are busy lately. I have started a topic at trbs forum about this synth and no one answered or downloaded it yet.

Ampli is indeed great at writing tiny songs, also a good personal friend of mine and I could ask him if you cant get help from your group.

How bad is this ?  Badly in need of a musician I think but some interesting sounds and a lot of potential. Is it a realtime synth?
Title: Re: Synth Music Test
Post by: va!n on April 16, 2008
@rbz:
its not easy to say how good or bad the tunes are, because i cant say how good or bad the tools of the musicians are (like, what tracker is he using, what are the features of the synth engine, what kind / number of samples and possible sample finetuning is possible for the musician and the synth engine?)

I think the two tracks are possible a good start but they are not my Kind of taste, possible because some notes seems to be wrong in the track.

Anyway nice synth and keep on your nice work on it!

Yes, I agree  :skint:
tracker version play in realtime and 4k version song is precalculated at start.

Paranoimia *couch* version it's not finished and sound wrong of course (sorry Felix Schmidt  :P) , I did it just to test tracker capabilities.

Title: Re: Synth Music Test
Post by: Shockwave on April 17, 2008
Bad?

The samples sound really nice, I think that a real musician could make something amazing with this synth. The samples are about the nicest I have heard in a 4KB synth.
Title: Re: Synth Music Test

shockwave... maybe there is a live behind the demoscene... i'll ever support rbraz! but:

1.) i have much work at this time and my job (reallife) is more important.
2.) i have a new appartement 500 km away from the old one... it was very hard to manage this!
3.) i was not online for a long while because i had'nt internet connection!
4.) i have big private problems because i think about to separate from my wife!

All that problems fucked my brain so much, that i really can not stay in my group at the moment... more embarrassed is, that members seems to could'nt work without my presence. :(
