Title: ScreenBlow
Post by: DeXtr0 on August 12, 2007
Hello all,

Here is my 2nd oldskool demo attemp called ScreenBlow

I'm still learning how to code so don't expect too much  ;)

Credits:
Idea & Code : DeXtr0 / dAWN
Code:  eNeRGy / dAWN
GFX : Jizzy / dAWN
Music : Stalken (1998)

Since the file was a bit too big to upload you can download it here:
http://www.dawncreations.com/Downloads/demos/DX_ScreenBlow.rar

All feedback is welcome so I can improve my knowledge..

I hope you like it a bit,
DeXtr0

P.S. Special thanks to all the members of this forum that helped me with tips/ideas regarding the sinusscroll.

It worked here (XP SP2) maybe it crashes with Vista?

Anyway, fwiw I think you really nailed that sine scroller effect, it looks great :)
Nice to see some new oldschool code.

Where are you going to release this? :)

XP SP2 here too.  I just get a black screen and nothing will shift it.

@Jim,

The only thing I can think of might be the version of DirectX or the amount of internal PC memory ?
Allthough I'm not sure since I'm not really an expert in that kind.

I hope somebody else can shed a light on this one.

@Shockwave: Since i'm new in "releasing" demo's I have no idea where to post it  ???

All tips are welcome,
DeX

Mmmm. Well that's a good question.

If you release it on Pouet it will get bashed because of the file size, some of the critique will be quite brutal, some of it will be helpful and constructive so if you think that you can handle that then you could post it over at Pouet.

Another place that you coulkd release it is Intro-Inferno, You will get some file size bashings but generally better comments.

Also you could release it over at Bitfellas too.

The intro has really nice artwork and the code is nice too so I think you should release it somewhere. Probably Intro Inferno would be the best place as the site is dedicated to small intros like this one.

I would try and fix the bug that caused Jims computer to crash first though.

Hey Shockwave,

Thanks for all the tips regarding posting.
I will do that "after" I got the problem with Jim's PC figured out.

I'll drop him a pm to start fixing it.

Cheers,
DeXtr0

P.S. Thanks for the positive feedback regarding the scroller

Check your PM.  I just ran it on my Vista PC and it works fine there :D  Very nice demo - you've got the sine scroller exactly right!

Problem is with upack (different packer than UPX).  If I unpack it with PE Explorer it runs just fine.  If I repack it with UPX it runs fine too, except it's 100Kb larger :(

Good news is your code is fine  ;D

@Jim: File Repacked with UPX, I hope it works now
@Shockwave: File submitted to Intro Inferno

Dextro,
Congratulations that was the longest time I ever watched such a one screen demo. Very well done to all of you! I'll tell you some stuff I really liked: colours, nice and subdued...the design, starfield one way, scroller other, logo off centre, really good, logo was cool and spinning cube reproducing the scroller was good too. Lastly the scroller was great, simply great.

To improve it a little, make the horizontal lines top and bottom of your scroller wider and alpha blend them a little at the edges. This way when they get copied onto the cube , they wont alias so much. Also clean up your letters around the edges, especially H and B.

Great job. Thanks.
