:xmas:CHRISTMAS COMPETITION 2007 :xmas:

:snowman: WELCOME TO THE CHRISTMAS COMP! :snowman:

On the back of a fantastic Halloween competition, the doors to the Christmas Competition 2007 are now open!
Again we have a nice varied amount of allowed styles and platforms so hopefully we will have some more really great entries just like the last competition!

Christmas is a fantastic time of year, celebrated in different ways in different countries, you could choose to use any theme to do with Christmas or the season of Winter (unless you're lucky enough to live somewhere that you can sit out in the sun on Christmas day!).

Choose anything that you like to do with the festive season :)

Again, this time, you can use any language that you want, as long as it runs in any of these environments;

Win32 , Dosbox , Vice , Winuae , Saint , PS2 Yabasic , Firefox / Internet Explorer

You may create a multi part demo, a single screen intro or a  game! Maybe you might even remake a classic christmas demo from the past!

Again, the possibilities this time are very varied we're sure that you'll enjoy this comp!

:xmas:  :snowman: HERE ARE THE RULES!  :snowman:  :xmas:

:xmas:  HERE ARE THE PRIZES!  :xmas:

So, there you have it! We really hope that you enjoy the competition, last years Christmas competition had some really cool entries and we'll look forward to seeing what you come up with this time!

Good luck :)

Good luck.

By the way, the self voting thing will be disallowed and made quite clear when the comp deadline is over and the polls open :)

No VBA as an allowed environment?

Do you mean VBA - Visual Basic for Applications, or VBA - Visual Boy Advanced Game Boy Advance emulator?  What did you have in mind?

No VBA as an allowed environment?

Allowed platforms;

Win32 , Dosbox , Vice , Winuae , Saint , PS2 Yabasic , Firefox / Internet Explorer

So if it can be run on Win32 it is allowed.

I meant Visual Boy Advance and as other Win32 emulators are specifically listed I guess it's not allowed.

A man of your talent can find another platform that's more accessible this time? I will look into that emulator and maybe add it to the allowed platforms in the next one though depending on how accessible it is :)

Sure! I meant to mention it for the Halloween comp but it totally slipped my mind. I'm not necessarily looking to do a GBA demo (although I might if it were allowed) but there are a fair few people who tinker with it so it might be nice to consider in future. I really want to use BlitzMax for the XMas compo as I've invested a bit of time in picking up its OOP-ishness. Still racking my brain as to what to do...

I have my idea, but it borders on the religious - very slightly.

I'll create it and run it past a few people before deciding how to proceed.

As long as it does not have any teddy bears called Mohammed it would probably be ok to be a bit religious.

Funny scandal that. But Christmas is a fundamental religious holiday. As long as the demos aren't trying to forcefully convert I see no problem with a bit of festive imagery.

Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Jesus, if you have a little faith then there's nothing wrong in putting that into your intro I think :)

Here goes - the lines in question read as follows:

Quote
Christmas is a very special time of year. It means many things to many different people.
The first Christmas was celebrated during the height of the Roman Empire.
It is difficult to say when exactly this occurred, but most people agree that it was the birth of a highly influential individual.
Most of you know who He is, and I won't say too much about Him, so as not to cause a fuss.
Let's just say part of his name is in the word "Christmas".
It wasn't until many years after this event that Christmas became a widely celebrated festival.

The there's a bit about how the celebration of Christmas became popular and how it changed, then:

Quote
Probably the most widely recognised character in all of this, at least amongst the children, is Santa Claus.
Many of us know of the legend of Saint Nicholas, of whom it is said gave away the wealth he had inherited to the poor and the sick.
According to news papers dating as far back as 1773, families of Dutch descent would gather in New York during December.
These gatherings were to celebrate the passing of "Sinter Klaas", shortened from "Sint Nikolaas".
At this time, the story of Sinter Klaas didn't have a single image - rather a range of different styles.
With the celebrations occuring at the same time of year, and with Saint Nicholas' legendary generosity, the two holidays merged.
He was reinvented as the bringer of presents to the children, and by 1822, was recognised as a portley fellow who lives at the North Pole.

Hopefully this will be acceptable. ???
