So today I was able to get a like new PSP. It cost me $110 USD. I have heard that there are some roms and such that you can play and also some other fun things to try. It is an older psp (one of the first I think) so all of the hacks should still work. My question is what things can you do with the older PSP systems? I don't really care much for the game selection (all sp0rtz and Fhurst Pursen Sh00terz) I'm more interested in emulation of older games and other neat things.

You may need to downgrade that PSP too.

I was told that it was an early version but it turns out that it is a 2.8. I've heard horror stories of people ruining their systems when trying to down grade. I'm hesitant to ruin a 200 dollar system. However I'm kind of upset because the game library doesn't really "tickle my fancy" either. Playing roms for my nes games would be great but it seems that I got the worthless version. I'm not into FPS games much or sports and it would appear that that is all there is. Heaven forbid they release a 2d game or two.
I do plan to get the Gradius game for it however. (Even though I have 1 and 3 (two versions of 3 actually(One for SNES and the other for PS2)))
I'm probably going get a DS today for more games than roms. I sort of wanted a portable emulation machine but Sony is bending me over and delivering a sound reaming with the firmware thing.

Every PSP can be downgraded using the "Pandora Battery" technique. You downgrade to 1.5 and then upgrade to the newest custom firmware. It's safe to do this as long as you get the files from a trustworthy source. You're right, there are some sites with bricking software, but the Pandora Battery can unbrick even those PSPs.
There is a load of cool homebrew for PSP - what are you interested in? Most people are in to emulated handheld games.

I'm not too concerned with music and media as far as homebrew goes but some homebrew games might be cool. As far as emulation goes I would like to play some classic shmups. I'm going to look into this Pandora Battery. Got my DS today too for 80 usd. I'll be looking into that too.
One thing that bothers me is the battery pack concept. After a few years they will loose capacity and become worthless. I have all of my old systems still so I think wayyyyy into the future.

Yep. New games often insist on a new firmware version. The install comes on the UMD with the game. If you have the equivalent custom firmware it works just as well.

I agree, I'm planning to get a PSP only for the roms too. If you try to crack up your PSP you should make a backup of the system files, I'm not sure if the PSP will recover itself like the iPOD. I had an iPOD in the past and when I deleted any system file it would came back after I re-connected it. I would copy the PSP system files to my computer as a backup.

It definitely doesn't recover automatically. If your PSP gets corrupted and you can't reboot it the only way out is to use the "Pandora Battery". There's no easy way to copy off the system files (they're hidden in a flash memory) and if you corrupt the flash and the PSP won't boot, there's no way to get them back on again, unless you have a mod chip.
