Title: What demo do you wish you had written?
Post by: Shockwave on January 13, 2008
I was looking at the new Northern Dragons textmode demo
Clockwerk (http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=43567) and I love it, it remined me of the one they released last year..

Signal To Droids (http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=28665)

I have always had a soft spot for textmode demos, and I've seen loads of them that have better things in them than Signal To Droids but for me the demo just totally rules! I really wish I had been the one who made it. I think it's probably the music that makes it rule so much.

The ascii effects are pure ascii and not some frame buffer > ascii conversion and I really believe that in the future I will code in this way too.. I love ascii demos and I'd really like to make one.

I love Cerror's tunes, he's my second favourite musician. His songs rule in both of the demos above.

Yeah. Cerror's tunes rock indeed.

Concerning ASCII demos I totally agree. They are very creative. Furthemore,
they are what the scene should be about - creating effects which are not
seen in every 2nd pc game.

I think I just came.

Very strange to see an all-positive set of votes on pouet, isn't it? Just shows the level of genius that went into that demo.

For me it would have to be  A Deepness in the Sky  (http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=8282) by mfx. This is my all time favourite demo it is absolutely mind blowing. I would really have loved to have had a part to play in its creation.

@rain_storm:  I haven't seen that demo before, very nice.

I've always liked the glow/gloom effect, it looks fantastic.  How would you code it though?

I was thinking...

1) Draw lots of bright - Like maybe change each pixel intensity from 0.0 to 1.0, to something like 0.0 to 2.0 but have a cut off at 1.0.

2) Then post process the 2d image, by blurring it vertically, then horizontally.

Does that sound right?

Northern Dragons always have great Ascii demos frea, probably they have thier own routines. A lot of ascii demos are framebuffer conversions though

I don't know many publishers or demos but to answer the question.

You know, many times before I found this place I wanted to create an effect that had no purpose and I felt that there was really no logical format to do it in and gain any acceptance. Now I can create an effect or series of effects just to see them work and call it a demo rather than some useless piece of junk. :updance: One of these days I want to finish my 3D scene generator but not during the current compo.

Stupid question, but what are the main sources for demos?
