Title: PROCEDURAL CHALLENGE VOTING!
Post by: Shockwave on May 16, 2008
In this challenge, the task was to create an image, scene, animation, texture, basically a graphical computer program which did not load any graphics :)

All the entries to this competition use various methods to generate the display proceduraly.. That is to say that all the graphics are generated within the program..

I am impressed as can be with the sheer quality of the entries this time around! You are going to have the devils own job in choosing your favourites out of the wonderful programs you have contributed to our second procedural challenge! :)

Last year produced some excellent entries, this year there were even more and in a really nice variety of different styles too! We have had everything from shader language to dos entries, animated effects and static textures, all in all we have 16 great programs submitted to the challenge.

My most sincere thanks to you all for the time and creativity, they were all a pleasure to watch :)

Onto the voting then, below you will see a summary of the entries to help you choose your favourites.

It would be folly to ask you to choose one so please choose your favourite three!

You MUST vote for three in the interests of fairness.
Self-voting is not allowed (this can and will be checked).

In the event of a tie for first place there will be a vote-off to choose who gets the cash.

I would also like to take this opportunity to commend the sportsmanship of the forum members here for the help you have all offered each other in making your entries compatible, it really warms the heart to see such good sportsmanship :)

Dr.D
Scrolling Landscape and clouds.

In this entry, a procedurally generated landscape smoothly scrolls across the screen from right to left comprising of cotton wool like clouds and a hilly landscape.

Mind
Procedural texture experiment.

Texture-San puts the power into your hands with this entry, this program is capable of generating a multitude of different textures using a variety of methods, everything is easily controlled with a user friendly interface that makes creating your own variations a doddle.

Rain Storm
Procedural Tunnel.

This entry is Dos based and as Rain Storm continues his journey of learning low byte coding skills he makes more and more interesting things.. In this entry, concentric rings animate outwards from the center of the screen towards the outside.

Fluffy Clouds.

This program generates a static texture of fluffy high altitude clouds, it was definately not inspired by the Welsh weather, which I can assure you is usually grey! The routine takes a while to generate the texture so a little patience is needed.

Dr.D

GLSL Plasma.

Dr.D has used Opengl shader language here to create a very authentic looking rgb plasma similar to the kind that was very popular on 16 bit systems like the Commodore Amiga. The red, green and blue components of the plasma bars blend into each other to form new colours as they contort.

Optimus

Perlin Raytraced Sphere.

The name almost says it all really, a large sphere bounces up and down on the screen, intersecting a plane, the plane is texture mapped with the classic Xor texture, favoured by so many low byte intros, while the sphere is textured with a perlin noise generated texture, all raytraced.

Nkk_Kan

Golden Hypnosis.

This program uses some sin/cos pattern to draw a series of circles around the screen with a golden colour palette, the visual effect created here loosley resembles the classic Shadebobs effect on the Commodore Amiga.

Deleter

Wood.

Deleter has given us a procedurally created wooden texture. This image is static but it is of high quality and it has an almost hand shaded look about it, as if it was drawn with pencils.

Ghost

Psycho.

On the borders of the screen you will see an effect that looks similar to the axial product, colour cycling away.. Then in the centre of the screen, a variety of computer generate patterns blend into each other, changing in time to the music.

Jim

Spider.

I might be wrong here but I believe that this is Jim's first attempt at shader language, two large spheres appear on screen and emmit other spheres, which get gradually smaller to create two interesting looking objects. One has a psychedelic looking texture, the other looks like wood.

Hellfire

Cave.

This entry uses pixel shaders to create a cave structure, Hellfire takes us on a journey through the caves with a realtime generated stone texture and sparkly specular lighting as the camera smoothly travels around the cave.

Liquorice Allsorts.

Some people hate liquorice, I am one of those people but I always found these colourful looking sweets great to look at. This entry just uses glu quadrics (specifically disks and cylinders) to generate the different sweets that appear in an animated fountain on the screen.

Rain Storm

128 Byte Fire.

Rain Storm dusts off his assembler again to give us a rather nice animated fire effect in only 128 bytes, it runs smoothly and looks great on graphics hardware that is capable of displaying mode 13H.

Pixel Outlaw

Lindenmayer Nocturne.

Pixel Outlaw creates a wireframe night time landscape complete with a forest of fractal trees over a pseudo-3D looking background, complete with the moon and a nocturnal colour palette to match! The program generates new scenes constantly as it runs.

Paul

Flame.

Paul shows off his texture making prowess by giving us his Flame entry.
This takes a little while, but bear with it.. The flames look like they have been drawn in chalk.

Voltage

Waterworks.

To start off with, random circles are drawn all over the screen, then three water sources pour into the screen from the top, the water flows over the circles and into the gaps. Soon, the screen becomes flooded and a new image generated so that the fun can start again!

Hooray :updance:

This was a really interesting challenge with wonderful entries and I had a hard time selecting only three favourites.
I would like to congratulate all co-competitors and big thanks to everyone who voted for my entry.

I'm gutted that I didn't get a place, especially because of how much ground I personally broke to get this out  :kewl: (not really)  I normally max myself at 15hrs coding for these demos, but clearly that's not enough, and is a great sign of the commitment people have to this forum.   I must try harder!

Great comp, and many thanks to the new forum members who entered, especially Nkk_Kan who didn't quite make it this time - keep it up mate, we're looking forward to your next competition entry. ;)
