Shockwave mentioned that I could post about this here so here goes.
My forum Shmup-Dev is kicking off a small mock-up contest. Shmup-Dev is a forum dedicated to the production of shmups or shoot-em-up games. These games are pretty much described as a game where your character shoots enemies while being able to move in 4 or so directions. To sum it up a flying/shooting game. The quality and consistency of the coders here is why I'm mentioning this here.
What is a shmup?

Motorherp, the other Admin has set up the rules.
Ok lets get the ball rolling on this and see if it takes off. Since this is the first session I'll create the theme this time around. If you're unsure what this is all about please read the 'Rules' sticky in the 'Rules and General Discussion' board.
Start Date: 19th May 2008
End Date: 2nd June 2008 (note this session might be granted an extension depending of how long it takes people to notice this and get on board considering this is the first session)
Rules / Concept: Create a shmup with meaningful gameplay in which the player is not allowed to fire their own projectiles.
Hopefully that makes sense to you all. Try to be as creative as you can in developing meaningful game play and scoring systems based around utilizing the environment and enemies in new ways. An existing example of this would be 'Shoot The Bullet' by Shanghai Alice. If you have any questions please post them here.
Good luck.

As a regular at Shmup-Dev, I'd like to encourage any who are interested to participate. It's shoot-em-up games, and rapid prototyping, a couple things I love.
I'm going to try and put together a little list of games that might inspire for this theme.

Do you shmup guys remember a game called Layer Section, on the PC about 1994-5? Has anyone exceeded that as a shmup?

Of course, Layer Section is a great game! I have it in a compilation game for my PC.
