We have a blank canvass at the moment, in about 3 weeks time I'll start to make the front page to this site so it seems like a good time to ask everyone what sort of things that they would like on the front page of dbfinteractive.
Obvious choices are links and shoutbox..

This months additions to the Showcase / Compos should be displayed I think

Something that encourages new members to post a little bit about themselves.I think yo'll find that once somebody gets over that first hurdle they are more likely to come back to see their replies and play an active role in the forum.They obviously like the site by registering in the first place so if you could come up with something on that first page i think it would make your site even more formiddable.

There should definately some teaser content for hot
topics in the forum for now - since the forum is the
most used function of the site right now.
So teasing compos, hot threads, new user might be
interesting.
Also, thought about a little flashtro/applet - but this
could be boring if you see it every time !?

Definitly hot posts & latest posts, next competition (if any to come).
Things like latest users, who is online, top users (most posts, more karma?), a random arcade taken from the list are also nice.
A java applet or a flash effect could become boring if displayed all the time. Now, it's a matter of taste.

Might be tricky to implement this one, depending on your database structure, but how about "the last 5 things that happened".
It could say "DaveedBeekham has joined the forum", "benny! has signed in" or "Jim has scored 5982 points on Chain Reaction" or something like that.
It might sound useless on paper, but if there's something popular going on, anybody logging in could see what it is and join in.

The SMF database has a lot of tables, however not everything has a time stamp on it so unfortunately if I was to impliment this then it would have to be limited.. I dont want to be adding fields to the database really if I can help it. Cool idea though! Incidentally maybe something could be done with XML.

Perhaps I could even moake a competitions page to show the winning entries off.
The way I'd like you to think about this is a multi-paged portal.
So on the first page it could be;
navigation
recent posts
who is online
shoutbox
Etc Etc..
It can be pretty much whatever we like.

Thinking about this i'm probably going a bit off topic.I guess what i was getting at was when the new member registered they could be redirected to the welcoming commitee thread where you could have a template post encouraging them to tell us where they are from, what languages they code etc ect.I'm not sure if this is possible but just a thought anyway.Sorry for going off topic back to the challenge.

Maybe have a 'feature of the month' showing the best demo/tool/game created that month, and have an archive dedicated to past winners. should get some more publicity to those wo deserve it, and encourage other to try for the top spot.

Maybe an idea to exclude the Hangar18 stuff as hot topics, and concentrate on displaying General sections and programming areas.

I don't know if this could be done but it might be cool to make a sinus scroller showing who is online. This would add a bit of style and be in the spirit of demoscene work.

If you're still impressed with the logo for the old YABASIC / Homebrew forum, I could make one in a similar style. I won't feel bad if you turn me down, but my drawing skills have improved a bit since then.

I've had a look at Intro Inferno, and I'm not quite that good yet. My attempt isn't nearly finished yet, but I'll work on it while I'm on holiday. Hopefully you'll like it.

As you have an advert on your opening page at the moment for Sundown Demoscene Party,
Why don't you have a background of the sunset. A dramatic red, and black silouette (probably spelt wrongly)

First define the layout and color scheme...then make your requests otherwise you'll get logos which won't fit your site at all...and gfxers will ban you if they work for nothing ;)

Once the content of the front page is decided, I will be leaving it up to whoever kindly agrees to make the gfx to design the layout, they will be a better job than I could.

hi guys...
personally i would prefer a site (maybe with some info/text) and ofcourse a nice dbf banner/logo, its a must!
however what about a maximum size (width : height) for a banner that can be implented to the site? When having a max size limit for the banner, everybody who is interested and can/want draw a nice logo can support this with his own creation of a logo.
On the serverside there could be a folder called /banners/ where are all (good looking and acepted) banners are stored like banner_000.jpg, banner_001.jpg, banner_002.jpg... With this way it would be possible to display everytime another (random!) banner on the site... something like pouet it did... I think this would be very nice feature and shows that the board is open for everybody and everything ;)

Tbh I am more interested in the content than the look at the moment, I need to establish this before I start coding after all... I can make it look pretty later. But they are good points :) Multiple logos is a great idea and easy enough to do in php.

Hi all, been a while since I've been that active but thought I would chuck some of my thoughts on the front page out there.
Since the main focus of the site and forum as always been about building a friendly and helpful community with interests in demo coding and in general oldskool style effects, the main page should reflect some of that. Perhaps have the front page or some part of it look like its taken from inside a retro styled demo or intro. Not sure how possible it would be but perhaps have some oldskool effects running via javascript (or even flash), the scroller some one mentioned being a good example, with a well designed logo and perhaps with the occasional sinus shift or something like that.
It needs to somehow show there's an active forum as well as show off some content.
anyone I am sure out of all the input something decent will emerge and hopefully bring in some more people.

Thank you for your thoughts Jon, putting aside for one moment the actual look of the site, your point about integrating the forum into the front page is a good one, this will be done somehow.
Luckilly we have Benny in the moderation team who might well be able to help with the Javascript side of things!
Logo and design brings me onto Combatking's logos.
I tried to discourage you at first from drawing them because you have your own very distinct style, you use really bold colours, but that style of graphics is not really a look that I would want for this website.

But unless you can draw to the standard of the logos I posted here, please do not draw one, it's really awkward to have to refuse graphics when I know people work really hard on them sometimes.
It's just that I want something really outstanding for the forum, I hope you understand and are not too upset.

After killing my installation of Macromedia Studio MX 2004 while trying to upgrade to version 8, I'm now left with no Fireworks. When I find the disk, I'll be able to work on this again, but that could take a while.
I'll leave the logo to the professionals, and do whatever it is I do best.

Haven't started to write it yet Clyde, thanks for asking though :)
I've been pretty much concentrating on writing remakes, a project I am being paid (a small amount) for and recently the remakes competition has had many hours of work and discussions about it between me and stormbringer, because the rules will have to be a little bit different to normal I want to make sure that they are right before it's launched.
I'm planning to get stuck into it once I have finished the paid project and Sundown party is over.
