Title: Showcase / Site Ideas.
Post by: relsoft on June 23, 2006
Hey guys, since I believe this is already a successful site? Why not make a proper main site instead of just a forum?  A proper gallerry(where we showcase everything that looks good here and a clickable image that hotlinks to it's thread) and a realeased prods by members here.  Even a tutorial section would be nice. :*)

That would be good, and I could help coding it, assuming we used PHP.

You'd be interested in some kind of php site with a showcase then? That is do-able.
Or in fact reading Rels' post, maybe even a nice front end with the best downloads could be sufficient?

On another token, I would possibly be prepared to increase the size limit on files that can be uploaded to the server, though if it gets to the point where all the bandwidth is going then I may start begging for donations ;)

Having a nice front page would be a nice touch. Good idea. I'll look into it, in the meantime if anyone has any ideas about this, please post them here.

Proper site, is a bit harsh, but we all know where you're comming from dude. And it's great to get these suggestions, can I ask though for them to be posted in the General section, so we can have this as purely for announcements of the site. Cheers.

A Showcase was something that I really wanted to introduce when I had control of Cool Creations. I had talks with my brother, to see if it was possible and what was needed. If it's something along the lines of Blitz Coder, I believe they used pearl to create the showcase. But Im no expert, it probably can be easily done the same in php.

And I've been thinking about this; if it was something to go along with, I do like the idea alot. All we'd really need to do is create a new sub category that was a link to the site that housed the showcase bits and bobs.

Only a mere idea / thought. How pratical it would be, I dont know as like I say I'm no expert, I just enjoy the hobby of coding gfx demos.

I'm not sure on the practicality of doing it either Clyde but I'd really like to try. A forum that has hosting ability is a real pull for new members, this forum works fine for that, and it is also something that I'd have really liked when I first got into PC coding.

If the worst comes to the worst I can always create another SMF site on the same webspace with a bigger upload capability and I know that will work definately.
I'm just not sure how much disk space / bandwidth will be taken if I do that.
Maybe it would be better to just be able to upload a pic of the prod and have the file on the submitters webspace.

How's about creating rules / guidelines for posting Completed work. So it fits the style of a Showcase. Perhaps something like a template post, that people can copy and paste and adjust to suit their prod. Or if someone is up for the challenge it could be talked about further. As it's a pretty neat idea.

It sounds pretty good to me. And, if you want a hand coding a frontpage, I've actually coded PHP for money before, so I'm pretty decent at it.

Starting to sound really good now.
Would it be possible to do something to have;

Screen shot (but restrict the file type to Jpeg / png and 40kb). (uploaded to the DBF site).
Comments.
Rating.
Link to product.

What I really want to avoid is people having showcases with no files attached, I really hate that over at CW.
Title: Re: Showcase / Site Ideas.
Post by: Clyde on June 23, 2006
That is frustrating at CW, as they've intermerged Worklogs and Showcases. Hence why lots of entries get misplaced and ignored.

This talk and ideas, has really brightend my day. Cheers, and it would be so cool for this to happen.

I think it will become a reality in the coming weeks :)
I have a lot of faith in that.

If I can help with any of the scripts i wrote for intro-inferno, just ask me, i'll be pleased to help you.

Druid, you're very kind, we may just take you up on that. The intro inferno site is really, really nicely done, great logos too. I'm looking forward to uploading the next DBF prod over there actually :)

What we are looking for (I think) is something that would group the demos by the language they are written in and with space for comments.

It's not really going to be so much for the ratings, although I'd like there to be a rating on the showcase, it's not mega important as there is Pouet and Intro inferno for that, but I'd reckon that the comments and feedback would have a different sort of flavour, I think people would post the prods there for more of a coders point of view on them in the feedback.

Damn, I know what I mean but it's kind of hard to get it accross, some of the members here that used to go to an old (and now sadly dead) site called Blitzcoder will know the kind of vibe that I mean.

Post by: Clyde on June 23, 2006
I think you mean, people who code in basic languages rather then the big boys C \ ASM etc, would appreciate the work and effort more so, and would judge rate it more fairly. As Pouet can be a tad cruel at times.

And I'm looking forward to uploading some of the Gravity stuff at inferno, as it really rocks. Welldone Druid dude.

Post by: Shockwave on June 23, 2006
Well, not exactly Clyde, but you're on the right sort of track. I think that maybe that would have been truer to say in the past but the site has become much more diverse with C++ and ASM stuff here too. And really there's not a lot of difference between them all, an effect is an effect no matter what it's made with.
What I meant was that on Pouet you get very honest and sometimes brutal criticism, it is usually along the lines of;

Rocks.
Sucks.

Etc.. If you think back to the days of BC, the comments tended to relate more to how the product was put together. The judgement of the product isn't as important as getting quality feedback. I'd hope that the showcase would be used in that way.

What would definitly rock would be some tuts....real tuts, not simple commented source codes.  Even if a forum can host tons of informations, a "real" web site would definitly be more efficient.

That would be a fab idea too, as one thing there isnt alot of FreeBASIC specific tuts around.

Tutorials would be great too.
The BC site had a load of tutorials, they were really useful. The way they did it was that the author could use their own html and a link would be generated in the forum if there were any questions / feedback from the tut (I might be slightly wrong about how the link was generated but I know it happened somehow).

Memories hey! :)

All this sounds so cool. And Im sure it will be a real crowd pleaser too.

This would be a great addition to the community, and I'd love to help coding this.

It's going to happen Phoenix :)
Please post your ideas here and we'll see what we can use.
Blitz Amateur is doing some code on some sample templates at the moment, he'd be the one to contact via PM if you have any suggestions. Me I know jack shit about PHP coding, I'm relying on you guys :)

Ok, I PM'd him  :) So what's on the wishlist? Articles, showcases, comments/rating, maybe screenshot of the month?

I like the showcase idea. It might even push me back into making some demo-like stuff again. Its been quite a while since I did something last. I wouldn't mind trying to write a couple of tutorials also, if you decide to have a place for that as well.

Me I know jack shit about PHP coding, I'm relying on you guys :)

If we all share our knowledge and share the tasks, we could set up something really interresting in no time..but honnestly, the php-mysql thingie is not the biggest deal.  Design is, I think, the most difficult part...any designer offering help?  ;D

Do you have MSN or any other IM, Druid? I use MSN; msvanis AT hotmail D0T com. It would be nice if we could talk :)

On the ideas for the Showcase, it's really nice that the peeps here want the showcase and it's even cooler that there are some members here, namely Druid, Phoenix, Blitz Amateur who have kindly offered to code it.

This is perhaps the single most important thing that can happen to the forum at this time, it's something that we will all benefit from and I for one want to make sure that it goes ahead. I've been involved in joint projects before and they need careful planning and organising. As Blitz Amateur is a member of DBF and has FTP access to the domain it is easier at the moment for him to go ahead and code a template.

In the meantime, if you have suggestions and ideas for the showcase, please do post them here, we appreciate them.

That's not snubbing your offer Phoenix, or Druid. If the showcase looks even a fraction as good as Intro Inferno I'll be very happy!!

If you post your ideas here, we can sort through them and Blitz Amateur can incorporate them into his program and if you are here to consult then I'm really sure that he will appreciate the help as the project carrys on further.

You'll all have the opportunity to debug the showcase and offer code suggestions as we get a working template together. Thanks you so much for being so positive about this and helpful too, I'm really proud of the members we have here, it's not like any other community I know of :)

btw, the intros/demos do not have to be hosted here, we could use intro-inferno: we put links here to II....dunno what you think about that?

Rel, thanks very much for the offer of the tutorials, I read some of your tutorials and they are among the best I have ever read, that will be really great!

Druid, it's really kind of you to offer hosting for the products :)
As far as this domain goes, we have about 600mb of webspace and roughly 28gb of bandwidth a month left at the moment.
I was thinking when this site was re-launched that it would grow slowly like the last one but it's exceeded all my expectations so far and I can't believe that we have over 50 members already and it's not even been 3 months.

Judging by the amount of traffic on this site from googlebot and other spiders I would guess that in the coming months we will get a good search engine ranking which might increase the membership even further.

It may come to the point where things will need to be hosted externally. I could probably stand the financial commitment of another 1.2gb of webspace and another 60gb of bandwidth so we should be ok for a while.

I am not even sure what the limits are going to be on uploading stuff yet.
Blitz Am is working on a showcase but I have only seen a very basic template so far and not anything that actually works yet so as it develops I'll have a better idea.
