Title: Need feedback for a logo :)
Post by: Hezad on October 19, 2008

Heya :)

Some of you already saw my website. I coded it quickly because I wanted a particular ambiance. But since i'm not a good web developer, it's everything but scalable (no css, no php, only pure html  ::) ).

So here I am, I'm looking for a relatively simple CMS which I could easily modify (especially the color chart). I searched on the internet but there are so much different CMS .. And very often, it's way more suitable for a portal than for a personal website.

In fact, I need something looking simple and/or sober which I could edit easily, without thousands of links everywhere. Ideally, some user feedback possibilities would be cool (comments mainly) but the most important thing is I must be able to modify the color chart and the images (I have a very precise idea with autumn colors..)

Any idea ?

thanks :)

What technologies do you have available with your host?

What version of php does your server have?
Do you have any SQL databases?

An ideal combination to enable you to add and change content easilly is;

HTML generated with php scripts.
News items and other updates retrieved from an SQL database.
Site colours and layout controlled by css.

So really the combination of those four technologies.. You can have a website that is changable, dynamic, beautiful and functional.

Not that many programmers seem to like writing php scripts but I have created a lot of templates and would be willing to put something together for you using your ideas, as long as it wasn't too complicated and that you don't mind waiting until I have finished the portal here?

Mate, that would be awesome ^^ But I don't want to bear you with it, please take your time and please do it only if it's funny for you to do it :)

Please tell me if you need anything (a schematic ? color chart ? more informations?) if you work on it :)

Thanks !

I'll be happy to do something..

Just need a few days to finish what I am doing and hopefully we can chat about it. In the meantime if you think about what you would like on your site and what you want it to look like that would be great.

An alternative would be to use something like
http://wordpress.com/ (http://wordpress.com/). There are thousands
of great looking templates already available. Plus
there are numerous plugins to let you expand your
sites' functionality.

Hey :)

@Benny : I'm really sorry, I totally forgot to answer you >< Thanks for the advice, but I have chosen Joomla! since I already used it some time ago :)

@Shockwave : Thanks again for your proposition, but I decided to use Joomla! since I already used it. I'll remember your help though. Don't hesitate to ask if you need anything !

I already started to add stuff to the site but I prefer to wait for the banner to be made before "officially" announcing it :) And in fact, that's the reason I'm posting right now :D
I could make the banner myself I guess, but I saw awesome (and I mean, really, astoundingly awesome :D) graphics here.

So here it is, if anybody with good graphic skills had some time to spent to make me a banner (the point is, the size is already fixed, and the color chart too), it'd be an honor to use it on my website :)

here is a temporary link the the site if you wanna take a look to the chart. The banner should replace the one where you see a .. dude hidden in high grass, watching you through goggles ^^

Link : http://narky00.free.fr/NewSite/ (http://narky00.free.fr/NewSite/)

The size of the banner is 1275 * 251. I'll try to put the color chart in a txt file if necessary.

Of course, you're free to do whatever you want, the only thing I want is a minimum correlation between the banner and the website content (obviously :p). Maybe just drawing "Hezad" in the way you want .. I don't know :D

Well, I know it's not a small demand, so I'd understand if nobody wants/can/have time to do it :)
But anyway, I'd like to have some feedback on the way I organized the different sections :P

Thanks a lot !

If you have no luck I'll ask Dicab for you Hezad :)

Joomla is an interesting piece of software, it's quite customisable.

Thanks for the link to DBF too, it's appreciated :D

@Hezad:
New site looks nice. Choosing a CMS to manage your site
is a good idea IMHO. Never touched Joomla though - but
it has a good reputation AFAIK.

Yes it seems popular..

Here's what I like the look of;

There are a load of plugins available..

http://extensions.joomla.org/ (http://extensions.joomla.org/)

I am going to be biased towards a custom solution though I'm afraid ;) In any case, good luck with it Hezad.

thanks ! Yep, Joomla is pretty powerful and has a big community. As shockwave noticed, there are also a lot of different extensions which is always nice :)

I permit myself to do a little UP here :)

And I use this UP to tell you about a thought I had : I can't say if my website will generate a lot of traffic (I think not but who knows ? ;D) but well, the only thing I can propose for the person which will do this is a text link to its website or the website of his/her choice on all pages of my website (I have an advertisement module).

That's not a lot .. But I'm afraid it's the only thing I can offer !

I know most people here are not interested in there own profit. I saw that a lot of time : people here like to help, to share, to learn and don't expect anything in return. That's a quality I really appreciate. But this time, I'd like to brought my tiny help so here it is ..

Thanks in advance, and I hope I won't look insistent or pressing !

heya :D I started to work on the logo :) But I need feedback, it's just a beginning but I'd like to know (graphists, I need your help ! ) if I'm on the right way (colors, typos, text/line location..), and if you have some ideas. Right now I really don't know what to add on the left :S

The first thought was "playing with the hand-made underline to draw something nice (silhouette ?)"

The second one was "what could be the second one ?" ;D

Doesn't the text "Wanderings between ...." look a bit pompous/pretentious ?

thanks :)

"Wanderings between" doesn't seem pompous at all Hezad, it's a good description of what you do.

It's hard to say if the logo colourscheme is bad or not when it's viewed on its own like this, I guess that it will suit a dark page layout quite well.

Well, in fact, it's just supposed to replace the actual header of the main page (yeah, the guy with goggles in grass ;D) without changing the layout ^^

Layout which is more clear than dark :s

Maybe a darker colour scheme would suit it better.
The hand drawn sketches can be an effective look though and warrant further experimentation.

I followed your advice and used a bit darker colors. Also, it's more sober now. What do you think ?

Nice, now add some highlighting to the edges of that box to make it look like glass and it will be great :)
Title: Re: Need feedback for a logo :)
Post by: Hezad on November 15, 2008
uhuh here is the aqua one then ^^ But I don't know .. It gives a "toy" impression lol
Title: Re: Need feedback for a logo :)
Post by: Shockwave on November 15, 2008
Highlight is too fat, not a glass look imho mate
Title: Re: Need feedback for a logo :)
Post by: Hezad on November 15, 2008
Sure :) I should draw sharper highlight. However, I tested the "non glass/aqua" version and I like the result, I think I'll keep this one for now :)

Oh by the way, I updated my no-ip account so http://Hezad.no-ip.org/ now points to the new site :)

I wish I could read your site!

British schools suck at teaching European languages.
Want me to add the site to the links now?

:S at the beginning, I wanted to write each entry in both french and (approximative) english but honestly, it'd be too much work. Anyway, the "articles" section will have some articles in french, some others in english I guess (the first article I ever wrote was in english :P I'll copy it on the website soon)

no hazard ^^

The only problem with the filter you are using is that the box is a strict rectangle and the reflected light looks like is was made for a button with rounded corners. You could always do by creating a semi transparent gradient layer that spans the top of the box.
Title: Re: Need feedback for a logo :)
Post by: Hezad on November 16, 2008
well I didn't use any filter in fact excepted some blur ;D

The rounded corners were planned but I didn't do them since I kept the previous one  :D

edit : (thanks shocky for the link !)
