Title: Same as Screenshot?
Post by: Shockwave on January 16, 2009
This is going to be an invitation for the next retro computer museum event.

Perhaps if my fellow group members in Codigos like it I'll even release it as a 32kb in the scene, but for now I have done a few things different to normal and I'd appreciate a little bit of testing please!

What I am hoping is that the display you get is the same as the screen shot.

I'm not looking for ideas for the intro (yet!) as it's going to change a fair bit, I'm more concerned that what you see is the same as the shot.

Many thanks guys.

If it fails anywhere I'll be grateful to know what machine / card :)

Thanks.

Is OK here too.  Pretty fx.  Windowed it probably needs WS_EX_TOPMOST else the window doesn't appear on top.  When you click/alt-tab it to bring it up, it turns back in to an edit box (that's the tiny framework "edit" class problem), click it again and it will crash.

Yup. Sweet effect, runs smooth and looks like screeny.
Message handling in windowed mode is wrong. To repro-
duce it:

- Open fx in window mode
- Click outside the window
- Try to re-activate fx window

On my machine this results into a crash.

Only problem is that my head is spinning :)

Thanks for the feedback, the edit bug is a well known *ahem* feature of the hacked framework, the same thing is true of everything made with it, I'll add WS_EX_TOPMOST but I don't think that the other bug is going to be fixed sadly.

Nice colors and design idea.

I just found a little bug with your shape connection when it rotate, take a look at attached image, I have marked it with an arrow

I would like to mention that most modern flat-screens are not 4:3 anymore.
On many devices hardware-scaling 800x600 results in ugly artefacts and wrong aspect ratio.
It's totally okay if you can't support every display's native resolution but when running in windowed-mode I'd atleast like to move the window to some appropriate position.
As long as you're not heading for 4k, please spend a couple of bytes on ergonomics.
I'm sure many users will appreciate your effort.

The effect and colour-sheme reminds me very much of this (http://www.dbfinteractive.com/forum/index.php/topic,3065.0.html) btw.

Ack thanks rbz, I hadn't calculated PI accurately enough, I fixed the gap.

Hellfire, yes, you are right of course, I'll alter the windowed mode.

The intro is indeed quite similar looking to that Fegefeuer cracktro by Widowmaker, I like the overlapping squares effect in that intro.

Runs smooth. Nice design.

Thanks.

I'm stuck for an effect to happen in the middle now.

I attached a new version with some of the issues fixed, Anybody got any ideas what I can put in the middle?

It's not essential that the chessfield stays.

I would definately like to do something cute looking.

Shockwave,
Would it be possible for the logo to go there? with something done to that? Just a thought?

Yes that could be done :)

I am looking for an effect really though... The logo doesnt really suit the visuals so I was going to display the logo at the start and transition between them.

The purpose of a "background-effect" is to give a feeling of "depth" to whatever is in front of it.
But it's rather difficult to figure out the depth of the chessboard, for several reasons:
- there is no shading but a constant 2d-colour-gradient (which is irritating)
- the chesspattern repeats too often, so you can't tell a direction from the visible edges.
- there is no connection between the board and shape in front of it
So in my opinion it doesn't really work well as a background-effect and it's hard to tell anything that could "fit" in front of it.

Maybe I would try to give the chessboard some structure or make bars out of it, like this
(http://ada.untergrund.net/screens/k/klone_5.jpg) (http://ada.untergrund.net/showdemo.php?demoid=24)
- just with a "something cute looking" color-sheme ;)
That could make a nice scroller, too...
Maybe you can make that shape in front of the board some sort of lens to disconnect the background when in- and outside of the shape.

Yes, you're right... It does need something to give it a sense of depth doesn't it?

Thanks.

Ja. Indeed. Very good answer, Hellfire. Makes sense!

Well smart Shockwave; just love that shape shifting outline.

I'll think up some ideas for you; the main one that springs to mind, is transition effects for images of PC's / sinus text writter - both on and off.

I also remember you doing a nifty text writter in Blitz, where you used different sized fonts to make the letters fly onto the screen.

I really like Hellfires idea of using a greeble (spelling?), I'll favour a tunnel because that will leave a nice hole in the middle that I can do something with.

I remember that typer Clyde, that could work with a nice squidgy font.

I have to talk nice to Dicab to make me a nice mesh for the middle now.

There's also a 3dsmax-plugin called greeble (http://www.greeblelicious.com/thumbnails.php?album=toprated) (which obviously inspired texas (http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=51448)).
Maybe you can create the geometry procedurally by randomly extruding/scaling faces of your mesh:

I'm not quite sure if that "hole" works well with your foreground-shape, but it's worth a try...
