Title: GP2X Showoff!
Post by: Optimus on July 02, 2006
It's more than one week since I got my new GP2X handheld. I've tried to port the ZeEngine3D to it (without the high poly objects though) to see it's true power (And that's only maybe a quarter of it's true speed, cause I haven't used the second co-processor and this baby can also be optimized much more). In the video below you can see both how the GP2X looks like and my 3d preview running on it.

That looks really cool. The objects in the video look to me to be quite high poly though. Sure you don't have the armadillo object but you've got that statue in there.
The GP2X looks like a smart bit of kit. How much does it cost and what do you need to be able to develop on it?

Around 180$ I think. And yes, there are gcc ports for ARM, like DevkitGP2X where I can develop under the DevC++ GUI. My project uses SDL so I can run and view it at the same time on PC for debugging.

Interesting sounding machine and knowing how successful the gp32 was I bet it will do well to. Having a portable mame would be cool :D

$180 is a great price for a nice bit of kit that can be developed on.
I remember paying £400 for a dev kit for the PS2 ffs!

I want one!!!  Not that I can affod it. LOL

BTW, does it have some SNES emulators already?

Yey, it has a quite good SNES emulator, which although is not as fast enough, but now it's about 15-20fps in Castlevania and maybe more in simpler games I haven't tested, so some games are a bit playable. And yet more optimizations are planned for this one..

I think Optimus releases his stuff using the name "Dirty Minds".

Actually, there is a new group in town. It was founded by a good friend with whom I meet in town and we go for coffee and talk about coding quite frequently. In our site (http://mindlapse.demoscene.gr) it's supposed that we are gonna rule (an elitegroup style joke :)) but our graphicians were so lazy and our first PC demo wasn't finished yet (Which is Nuclear's code in OpenGL with amazing pixel shader effects!). Later I joined and decided to release the GP32 demo under the Mindlapse label. My friend has just seen the GP2X and ordered one for himself too (because he really liked it has Linux and it's opensource ;)). So, i guess we are a PC/Gamepark group too now =)

I release CPC stuff under Dirty Minds, C64 stuff under Anubis and Nasty Bugs was a PC group I am into, but it became very inactive right now and we lost communication (my fault too). That's the reason I joined Mindlapse actually, also the fact that I am living in the same town with Nuclear means we could have code sessions together or frequent discussions about our projects. Even if I am lazy to send an email, irc or talk on the net, we can discuss about our laziness at the coffee store  O0

Hehehe so I should greet you as Optimus ^ One of several groups depending on which platform you are thinking about at the time of reading this scroll or;

Optimus / Dirty Minds & Mindlapse & Anubis & Nasty Bugs.

Glad that's clear :)

Heh..

Actually once upon a time I was preety much proud to be a member of some group, so I was even crazt to write Optimus/Dirty Minds^Nasty Bugs^Anubis^Mindlapse in my signature (well, without Mindlapse because that time was long ago ;)). Now I just write Optimus or Optimus/Dirty Minds because many people know me with this sig and it's also the group I started, having some good scene memories, a good friend coder from the group, etc. I am still in love with Dirty Minds (even if preety unmotivated to start coding a new CPC demo, the easiness of making demos on PC has taken my oldskool soul :P), Nasty Bugs are inactive, I have some good friends but we are far away each other and busy with our lives to make a demo that doesn't suck, Anubis was a good new thing, first time I was in C64, promising people but almost as inactive as me these days, also I am afraid to do a new C64 demo right this moment, and then there is Mindlapse which is promising because I am at the same town with my friend and we share it's other interests in coding. But Dirty Minds is THE group for me, so you can call me Optimus/Dirty Minds or simply Optimus, YES =)

Lol, that's cleared up then :)

£124.99 is a pretty good deal if you compare it to other handhelds that cant do as much. Only the PSP has some of the media side covered but it's not to easy to do homebrew on. I wouldnt mind one of these GP2X's just to play the emulator games on when not at the pc  >:D

I remember when I had Mame, I didn't do any coding at all for like 3 months because I was too busy playing old stuff abd re-living my childhood.

I bet that Pengo would be shit hot on that handheld, I must have spent £££££££ on that. And the other one I like (don't know if there is a version on Mame) is one that you did Jon, Time Pilot, I remember enjoying your version so much and playing it for hours, I was dissapointed that you didn't impliment the squadrons in your version (a favourite cheat of mine was to get the hindenburg almost dead at the first level and then take my score up to 300,000 on squadron bonuses before going on so as to get the maximum extra lives)... Nevertheless I still played it for ages, it was a damn fine conversion.

That's what I'd be afraid of if I got a GP2X... Still, the money is there at the moment if I want it, there's loads of overtime to be had at work.. I'm a little pissed that the cow object didn't make it into led blur btw Optimus!
