Title: What do your Family and Friends think?
Post by: Clyde on February 20, 2009
Do any of you tell your parents, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunties, cousins, Gran's and Gran Dad's, partners, wife, husband, dog, cat, gold fish, and hamster about what you get upto on the computer?

Do they share an interest in the end result of your productions, obviously they wont understand what goes into making one, unless they code them selves.

Nobody is really impressed much by my work in my family. They don't get the depth and effort that goes into coding to them it is just wasting time on the computer.

Dad, take a look at this game I'm working.
Ah. Did you get your room picked up?

Yeah I still live with my parents while I go to local college. :xmas:

A few people I know are interested in my web coding ability, and are willing to pay for it, but the rest of them think I am wasting my time.

Most of my friends don't understand why I do what I do.

It used to be frustrating when I was growing up that my parents didn't seem to understand it, but I can't say they were unsupportive.

I tended to code in the evenings when everyone was watching the telly so they didn't want to be disturbed.

My brother knows about whats involved as he does programming of allsorts for a living, but generally feels demos abit boring.

My Mum thinks that I waste my time on the PC, and should get out more. My oldest sister hasn't seen what I get upto on the pc, gfx demos in general. My younger sister thinks they are pretty cool; im waiting until she see's some over at Pouet net.

The Jack Russel Terrier cross that I looked after called Chip, barked whenever there's flashes from the screen, so I presume he enjoys them.

As for the Goldfish, well he didnt really say too much.

Yeah - same here. Since my childhood my friends simply couldnt share
my interests. Somehow I felt they do not "understand" intros and the
creativity behind them. Whenever I showed them an demo - they asked

"Hey that look cool, is it a game - what can I do with it?"

When I explained them that it is just a non interactive show and there is
no gameplay involved they didn't understand it.

They think I'm a genius and a millionaire.  They are only half right.  They also think they are entitled to infinite free telephone technical support.

lol  :D

Pretty much the same responses here, friends don't see why I find it so interesting, waste of time etc etc...
I think part of why they don't find it impressive, is because they probably mentally compare what you've done to
other visual work they've seen which is'nt driven by code (either film effects or rendered stuff).
To do something mildy impressive visually/audibly with programming is a great achievement that can only
be fully appreciated by those who understand what's going on under the surface.

...They also think they are entitled to infinite free telephone technical support.

ROFL ... I really know that. And they are also quite disappointed when they
realized that I am not a master in WORD or EXCEL and I do not know every
configuration settings of Windows.
