I have been puzzling over the black rain theme that we're using for the board, specifically the border around the edges.
Obviously I would liek the portal to look pretty close to the style of the board and I have been wondering how to make those nice borders because they are not image based and are not a standard border style.
I've sussed it out now.
What Crip did was to have a 1 pixel border on a containing table, making the background colour grey and having some padding.
Another table is contained inside this with the right hand and top edges only being coloured.
Nice effect.
Respect.

Most standards purists would slate the use of tables for layout/presentation as bad practise and tell you off for not using style sheets.
But if it works, it works. I'd do the same.

Oh I agree totally.
In fact I am one of the biggest standards bores you'll ever find but I was just so totally blown away by the simplicity and cleverness of this idea... And there's no simple way of achieving the same effect in CSS...

If something works like that then imo while it might not be the "correct" way, it works so must be correct within the bounds of the enviroment, in this case the browsers are capable of using it to create the layout so it must be valid.
The shot you posted looks pretty good SW, keeps the feel consistent from what I can tell :)

Thanks, I have an instance of the forum and portal running on my pc here, the portal can be logged into now and it fetches the recent posts too :)
