Title: The Liquid Challenge!
Post by: Shockwave on February 13, 2010
LIQUID CHALLENGE 2010 center]

:stirrer: !Welcome To The Liquid Challenge! :stirrer:

It's been quite a while since the last challenge, this time we are throwing the net out wide.. The challenge is to make something to do with liquid.

There are so many ideas that you could use.. Perhaps you'll make an accurate simulation of water flowing, maybe you'll use a different liquid like mercury or steel. Maybe you'll melt a block of ice, perhaps you'll even simulate something like flying past a coral reef or a shipwreck, maybe a fishtank... Possibly you could model the gas bubbles inside your pint of beer... Maybe your garden sprinkler will inspire you.
You may even want to simulate a volcano with it's exploding lava... Up to you.

It's up to you what idea you decide to model, the remit is simply to do something that has liquid in it.

:) Here are the rules!  :)

  • Your Demo must contain liquid of some kind.
  • You can use any platform that is compatible with windows XP+Vista.
  • You may write something for web browsers as long as it works in IE7 or Chrome or FF3 (or all!)
  • Wild (Video / Animated) entries are allowed.
  • Procedural graphics entries are allowed as long as it is one single file <16kb no animations allowed, file must not permanently write on hard drive.
  • The following emulators are welcome: Vice, Winuae, Saint, PS2 Yabasic
  • Please give credit if you use ripped sound/gfx, or even better credit the original artist.
  • Please write something new for the challenge, no previously released stuff.
  • Do not use ripped routines. (dlls, libs, fmod, sdl, frameworks etc are fine but say what you used please!).
  • Entries to be posted in this forum please with the title [LIQUID] entry name
  • Entries may be posted between NOW and Midnight of [10th April 2010]
  • The winner [S?] will be decided by a poll of forum users
  • If 1st place is tied there will be a vote-off to decide the winner.
  • Late entries will not be counted for voting.
  • Please PM any correspondance regarding rules to me, don't discuss them here such posts will be removed and not answered.
  • Please include a screenshot of your entry in your post.
  • Please only post finished work, if you update your entry the final one will be voted on.
  • After the submission deadline You may NOT post ANY further attachments to final or other versions of your entry ANYWHERE on this forum until voting has closed.
  • You may post a video of the entry along with the binaries (useful if you use shaders etc).
  • Prize money is by Paypal only. No other forms will be discussed.

;D Here are the prizes!   ;D

  • 1st Place  £10 - Sig - 15 Karma
  • 2nd Place - £5 - Sig - 10 Karma
  • 3rd Place -  Sig - 5 Karma

I have too say:
"Youpi a new challenge"

But, I am really dead between all my projects ... moreover when I have planned to go to this BP 2010 ( You know :D )... and maybe with a demo.
So, after BP, I will try to do a demo for this challenge. ( Let's be a bit foolish ).

We will see, but I can't promise

I'd like to enter this, but only if I get time.

When you say: "Procedural graphics entries are allowed as long as it is one single file <16kb no animations allowed, file must not permanently write on hard drive.", could you please explain further what you mean?

Are you saying we can't have graphics files that are larger then a total of 16kb, or something else?
Title: Re: The Liquid Challenge!
Post by: Jojo on February 13, 2010
JL235, that means: Either do a demo or do procedural graphics, i.e. a still image that is being generated by the computer in no more than 16kb.
Title: Re: The Liquid Challenge!
Post by: Shockwave on February 13, 2010
JL235, as Jojo said it means to create a static picture without external graphics.
16kb is generous, I reccommend Pouet.net if you want to see some really breathtaking procedural graphics in 4kb. The rules for the procedural category were lifted from Breakpoint party last year and the file size limit upped to 16kb to give everyone more of a chance.

This is just one option, if you fancy making something that moves instead please do!

I answered these queries, but I mentioned in my post, please PM me any questions you have on rules, I don't want this to turn into a nitpicking session on the rules as has happened in the past.

Finally there is an expression.. A rising tide raises all ships.
If you are not going to enter the challenge I'd thank you not to post here saying you won't / probably won't be entering.. I don't want this challenge to end up with just 4 entries like the last one!

I am really paying close attention to this challenge and future challenges will depend on whether enough people try for this one.

That sounds like a great theme around the kompo and plenty of time! Now everybody get to the werk with liquid!

I'm entering. I need something to break me out of this cycle of php coding. Just a change.

Shoe-horning AI into this could be hard, but adding some sort of food chain would be cool. (de-ja-vu alert). Interactivity would be great.

Great subject!

Normally these are the most busy times for me but I have something in mind. There is enough time..

Oh maaan, I just switched to Ubuntu, meaning I can't code with B3D and take advantage of some of the cheap ways to get water fx that it offers. Good excuse to have a play around with BMax, though...

Oh, hello everyone!

This is getting frustrating - each time I choose a new idea, someone else does it the next day.

I'm not saying anybody is copying, just that great minds think alike, which is making it difficult to come up with a unique idea.

It's going to be harder to choose who to vote for this time than it is to code  ;D

Still, I think I've found something unique this time. It's so strange I doubt anybody else will think of it.

I still intend to enter something, I just hope I can unravel the spaghetti mess that is my OpenGL code in time :(

I've been having difficulty in changing the colour of an object using ActionScript.

Then I realised the language is written in American English, and changed "new Colour()" to "new Color()" and it works!

I should have something ready for the deadline :D

lol ... that is really one of those bugs on which you eventually spend some hours on
finding them.
Title: Re: The Liquid Challenge!

It was compounded by a weird string of spelling mistakes and syntax errors. I'm not sure what I was thinking at the time, or even if I was thinking at all, but I've been back through it and got it working.

Had to sacrifice a lot of the pretty icing-on-the-cake background graphics for the frame-rate, but hopefully it was worth a vote or two.

I am not sure but I think 18 entries to a comp here may be a record, well done!

I will be formatting the posts today, voting will start tomorrow :)

Thanks for all the effort you put into your entries, it's a tough call as to who's going to win.
Good luck everyone!

[Warning, the following post may contain a subliminal message]

Very many entries this time.
Ordinarily, we don't see many.
There are some that I can say I'd definitely vote for, but it is hard for me to choose a favourite.
Excellent work.

Really great effects,
And a marvellous display of coding skill.
I think everybody who entered tried there best.
Nobody should leave this contest disappointed.
Brilliant, truely brilliant.
Ox tail soup.
Wow.

Finking about suggestions for the next contest.
Or is it too early?
Understanderbly, we'd best get the voting and awards done first.
Now I spotted a lot of new names this time.
That's encouraging.
Again, my congratulations to everybody who entered.
I'll stop ranting now.
New PC needed for next time.

Hey guys!
I must say I almost deciphered the subliminal message, but
probably due to bad eyesight I encountred some
problem, so I gotta ask: am I not looking right
or what does VOTfE mean ck0...  :D? I guess
there must be a spelling mistake or
rather just some misalignment
on the screen. Well, never mind, good luck everybody
!
;)

I modified an old Super Mario Bros. sprite and scaled it up.

It may have been a misalignment - it was a long line.

Well, in any case the subliminal aspect of the message has now been destroyed :)
I saw something like this on a gravestone once, the inscription read "FUCK YOU" if you read it down the left side.

It's on the internet somewhere if you care to google it.

Thank you. The only explanation for the uncontrollable compulsion must be the slightly hypnotic effect of 1001 brightly coloured dots moving about on screen.
