Title: Firefox 4.0
Post by: va!n on March 21, 2011
I have to say, i am a really big firefox fan since years! From time to time i try other browsers like opera and chrome too. For me, firefox with all his great addon like NoScript and AdBlock is the best browser. Now i have installed the new final Firefox 4.0 and the first thing is the new (lighted / cutted down) GUI which is not really how i like it but its okay. Something i really miss, is the Statusbar, where you can see source adress when hover a linkadress. The new firefox is really a lot faster as the old version and i am really a bit impressed! Now its time to use and play a bit around, to see how stable it works and what are the good/bad sites of the new GUI. Btw, all of my old addons seems to work.

I'll have to give it a try - I was once seduced by the speed and layout of Chrome, but I was put off Chrome by the rubbish Flash support.

If FF4 offers the best of both FF3 and Chrome, I'll upgrade as soon as I can ;)

I'm using a beta version of firefox 4 since a couple of months.
It is in many situations slower than ff3 and consumes more ram than ever - but, hey, it's a beta...

It appears somewhere in the bottom of the main-window now (which is okay but not particularly good either).
In an earlier version it appeared in the address-bar (which was completely stupid).

The new gui works well as you can see more web and less firefox.
And I never managed to crash it.

I had some real headaches with text rendering with the previous FF4 betas.  Fonts on most sites seems really smudged and hard to read.  Just installing the release candidate build, which will hopefully sort the problem out. Anything to get as far away from IE as possible :)

Edit: Nope, just installed the final version of FF4 and the issue is still there.  Looks like over-zealous anti-aliasing of the text.

Can you post a screenshot? Here all text rendering seems ok.

Here you go. It's particularly bad when sites use small fonts. The anti-aliasing makes it really hard to read the text:

glow.mozilla.org (http://glow.mozilla.org/) shows a pretty neat download counter for firefox 4.0. At the time of writing about 130 are downloaded each second

@Raizor:
Sorry, i know i dont have the best eyes and even having more problems with my eyes last time due fact of some health problems. But i dont really see a difference to my rendered font here and i can read the text without any problems. So i am a bit wondered if my eyes are now really so bad?

No status bar?

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo :'(

The font in the sreenshot uses subpixel rendering (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subpixel_rendering) - if you use a crt screen (or lcd with odd rgb-layout) this can look rather crappy.

I like this version ... lot of screen space (wow my screen is so huge :D)).

Otherwise, the status bar is not missing ... if you hover a link, you can still see the URL (fortunately)

I have upgraded - I now have room to see more on screen than I did before, which is great on my low-res laptop screen.

The animated smilies above this post (while I'm typing) are running slower though. I may need to defrag.

Maybe it's just me va!n. I probably just need to get used to it after years of aliased text :)

Just found this excellent set of tips for setting up FF4, this seems to cover turning of the subpixel font rendering too.

Just downloaded it and I love it, a lot cleaner and structured. I like the new status bar as a subtle popup.

Unfortunatly the fireFTP add on seems to have some problems recognising files on my ftp server now, names are now weird numbers with a date, filesizes 0, and dates undefined... I hope I manage to solve this soon because I used it regularly.

I'm using it now and it seems a fair bit faster on my computer to be honest.

Since the beginning a doubt about this app ... but ... why not.
It's a huge number. And German the first in Europe :)

After using FF3 a lot, I changed to Google Chrome while having problems with FF3.6. The problems were a lot of performance ones (slow). I like Chrome a lot, especially because of its fast javascript engine. But I really miss some FF addons on Chrome.

Now seeing support of WebGL in FF4 and an even better javascript engine, I switch back to Firefox again I think.

Chrome also has a compatability problem with Flash player, in that the keyboard layout switches back to US English, no matter what it has been set to in the operating system (under Windows XP).

This can be annoying when trying to type email addresses into a Flash form in Chrome using the proper UK English keyboard layout, and even more annoying for other languages.

I did like the layout of Chrome, but now that FF4 has a similar layout, I'm happy.

Totally agree here. I really love FF4 (using it now since some days regulary). And most of the addons are already ported and work with the new version.

Plus, I just heard FF mobile is now available on the Android market.
