Title: So, are you lot basically mainly demo coders?
Post by: puki on March 23, 2011
I've never been into the demo coding scene - other than buying demos for the Amiga.  I only joined years ago when that "Clyde" boy was squeaking at us Blitzers to come over here and Large about.

So, are there any normal coders here - ie people that can code in anything other than 2D/pseudo 2D?  Say, like doing an FPS game etc - a 3D game?

What's the story?

I suspect Clyde was promoting the forums as legitimately as he could - encouraging people to join another fourm while posting in another is always a sensitive business.

We're mainly demo coders here, though I tend to lean more towards 2D games and educational tools. I'm looking into expanding my skill-base into 3D graphics and physics models, but there are plenty of people here I can learn from.

Yes, this site is for people who are interested mainly in demos.

From time to time other stuff gets discussed but it's never really been about games.

I used to buy most of my demo stuff from a place called NBS who were on the Isle of Wight.

I liked their disk labels - it was sort of a night scene of a haunted house or something and a cat - maybe a moon too  I still have them all somewhere.

So does anyone here play computer games?

Other than demo coding, what else do you lot do?

Anyone ever take a sneaky look inside a NASA system, etc when they are a bit bored?

Me too!  Do you know what happened to them?  No one else has ever heard of them.
I did a (very sad) disk for them, of which I don't even have a copy.

I've dabbled in many genres of game, and my favourites (call me immature or childish) include:

Goldeneye (N64)
Sonic the Hedgehog (Original, 2, 3 & Knuckles)
Pokemon (the main RPG series)
Super Mario Bros (The 2D platformers, especially World and New)
Command & Conquer Generals Zero Hour (PC)
Super Mario Kart (All versions, though I haven't played the arcade version)

While I find game programming to be challenging, demo coding can often be a way for me to focus on one or two effects or functions and explore them to the full without having to work on other parts of the program as much. I can then develop these features and use them in later projects. It's all very useful.

Wow, I remember those disks. I haven't thought about them in what must be 15 years now. But I can see them clearly in mind.

I lean more towards the reverse engineering side of things, I've always loved to take things apart, see how they work and then duplicate them. This is why I have such respect for the 256 byte demos. I honestly find more fun/challenge in crunching bytes then playing games. I'm weird like that.

As for video games, I like to create GameShark codes (http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/914326-vagrant-story/51724920) and mods/hacks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZGf9WZgEFg&feature=channel_video_title[/url) for Vagrant Story. I wouldn't mind writing a cracktro for it at some stage. But I've given up the notion of writing my own game engine.

There's always been some degree of overlap between demosceners, crackers and video games, they all branched off from the same root.

I dug out a NBS disk:

The postal address was a residential bungalow on the Isle of Wight.  I'm not sure if PD distribution was their main venture as they were called Newport Business Supplies or Newport Business Services (something like that).

EDIT:
In fact, I just noticed that they moved address at some point as some of the disks have a different address on the back of them.

EDIT:
Yeh, there was also a shop which is now a Samaritans charity shop.

So, I guess that they just went out of business in general.

The address was 1 Chain Lane, IoW.  Which is industrial units.

All my Amiga disks, games, programs, and Amigas went to Oxfam.

Oh. It's not the one I remember. The one I'm thinking of was black on white and had a spiders web on the image too.  That's certainly a cool looking label though :)

I remember the too. I used to buy blank disks from them sometimes. They had a good collection of pd disks and were one of the least sucky pd companies.
