Yet again, we have another selection of really great entries to this challenge!
This challenge was very important to DBF because it marks a significant revival of the site, in fact it is more busy now than it has been for the last two years.
Thank you to the people who took the time to enter this challenge, you've really shown your support for this 10 year old community and the effort that has gone into these demos is really excellent.
There is a lot of karma up for grabs this time so what these fine entries need are some votes.
There seem to be two approaches taken to this challenge. One is the interactive approach where the user destroys something and the other approach is more of a simulation with physics. It's going to be hard to pick a winner!
To keep things fair, here are the rules for voting and votes are checked by administrators)
Voting rules:
- Please vote for 3 entries, you MUST vote for 3, not 2 or 1.
- Please do not vote for yourself or you will be disqualified.
- Voting is open for 7 days from now.
- In the event of a tie break there will be a vote-off.
- Please try and view all the entries before voting.
Good luck everyone!
-
Blobsteroids (Optimus) - Some large connected elastic structures fall slowly from the top of the screen, you can fire spheres into the structures and when they have taken enough punishment they break apart in a very smooth and satisfying way.
The action is very slick and smooth, no matter how many objects are on the screen.
-
Face Burner (Combatking) - In this interactive entry there is an opportunity to burn a selection of notorious and just plain annoying personalities.
After choosing who you want to burn, you just click on part of the face that you want to set fire to and watch them burn slowly away leaving only a faint outline of where they used to be.
-
Bobfield Surfer (Padman) - In true oldschool demo style we have something that looks very much like a crack intro here. A surfer surfs back and forth, generating some nice bubbles which float away and burst in a natural looking way.
In the background you can see fireworks and at the end of the demo the screen disintegrates into tiny squares.
-
Wreckathon (Kirl) - Destroy the DBF logo bat and ball style! Actually this doesn't do this demo justice, the design is great and you can set fire to the logo or shatter it.
You can even destroy the scroll when the logo is gone (and there's a nice surprise if you read the scroll until the end).
-
Shatter (Xetick) - The camera rotates above a beautiful voronoi generated stained glass window. We are treated to two different slow motion animations of the glass exploding out of the window as the camera continues the slow pan around the scene.
-
Toy Destroy (RBZ) - Some cute sprites from Mario are turned into 3D animations made out of cubes, some of the sprites are dropped into the screen and break apart when they hit the floor with nice physics and shadows. This continues through a selection of objects until finally someone drops a bomb and it all ends with a very satisfying explosion.
-
Hammer VS Laser (Combatking) - Cans of Spam drop out of the sky , and you have control of a hammer which you can use to smash them. In the meantime there is a laser beam intent on doing the same thing so it's a race between the two things.
The action can be controlled with some sliders on the right-hand side of the screen.
-
Touching Cloth (Jim) - A cool bit of physics here, images of kittens and bunnies are texture mapped onto a cloth which is suspended by two of its corners, the cloth begins to tear under its own weight and falls apart.
There is a nice debug mode here too where you can examine the mesh and cause the cloth to tear faster.
-
Most Crappy Destruction Ever (LittleWhite) - You journey through space towards a planet, 3D stars rush past as you do so. When you reach the planet there is a lighting effect as it heats up, it then explodes outwards as a series of lines.
-
I <3 Teddy (Shockwave) - An endless series of cute teddy bears scroll by on a conveyor belt, you have a shotgun attached to your mouse and naturally it's loaded.
You can blast the teddy with the shotgun, each mouse button controls a seperate barrel and the stuffing blasts out of the teddy in quite a satisfying way when you pull the triggers.

Whew! The top 3 are really close together. 24 people have voted so far.. would be cool to get this to 30! if you have voted, thank you - if you haven't, please do! these entry deserve your votes.

I realise that I'm up against some very high quality graphical programers, so I'm glad to have even one vote :updance:
Still, I think it may be poetry time:
Fairly good turn-out this year,
And it's great to see the forum live again,
Can we celebrate with a beer?
Everyone, except the designated driver.
Bad as this may sound,
Underneath the ground,
Reginald lost his ten-pound-
Note, so his sorrows cannot be drowned.
Everybody frowned.
Remember when I did something like this last time round?
Does anyone else have a competition based poem? Subliminal messages are all the rage.
-
It was a great challenge!
crafty submissions,
and lots of cool ideas!
not as good as mine though,
that's why you should vote for me.
rats!
how did this subliminal thing work again?
yeah, I suck at it.
messed it up...
erm, oops?
:bricks:

I woke up about 2 mins ago and realised the voting is closing in 10 mins time!
Got my vote in with 3 mins to spare!

Awesome, congrats rbz and Xetick! :updance:
Yay to all participants, love looking through the entries, there are never enough!
Great subject again and it's cool how these challenges really push me to finish something within a time frame, I have this nasty habit of jumping projects before finishing them. Learned a lot, already looking forward to the next challenge!
Thanks for the votes everybody!

Well done guys this was a tough one. I really don't know where you guys found the inspiration.

Congratulations, Kirl, and well done to everyone who got more votes than Face Burner. ;)
