Title: k+ karma
Post by: Shockwave on March 29, 2011
I tend to give good karma when I see someone going out of their way to help someone else.  I have also been known to smite people sometimes - usually if I can see that they have used code without credit.

A few years ago, karma was a much more common thing to see given on Dbf.  I would always see k+ on posts.. karma became the currency of good will on this site..

We don't do it so much these days for some reason but it is the perfect way of thanking someone for help that they have given.

I am interested in trying to revive the custom and I am thinking of allowing karma to be changed more often.  I M interested in your thoughts on this and in particular I am interested to know what circumstances would lead you to award good or bad karma to someone.

Do you think that posting k+ is a waste of time, or is it an important strengthening aspect of thisccommunity.. could it. E one of the things that sets us apart from other places and encourages new members and ore, topics, posts and helpful behaviour..

?

I think Karma can be a good stuff ... but the point is that it is not enough visible.
It would be cool (I am taking the same scheme used in a French community programmers forum) that with a message with +3 karma can be coloured in gold (for example (gold because it would looks cool on this forum ))
I mean, ok for giving the karma ... but actually, we don't know where / when the karma is given. Moreover, yes, some people have lot of karma, but what did it change ?

I still click people's karma (usually +) all the time, but I don't usually post to say that I did it.
Which probably isn't working the way we want, because it's the posts that say "K+" that are more obvious.
So what LittleWhite is saying makes a lot of sense.  Seems to me though that karma belongs to a poster and not a post.  But we definitely don't want karma league tables.

What LittleWhite and Jim are saying makes sense to me. I you could get the board automatically add the K+ (and maybe the giver's name) to the original post, that would make the process easier for users. Colouring the post in the index would be nice too. Not sure how to avoid the karma league tables issue, but maybe everyone competing to be the nicest and most helpful person on the board isn't such a bad thing...

Not sure if the karma always belongs to a person rather than a post. I think it's probably a combination of both.

As a new member, I think the whole karma approach is a nice touch.

Karma racing - the slowest yet most rewarding of all extreme sports ;P

But seriously I mentioned an idea to Shockwave back when I was on the mod team, that we should have a score below our avatar saying how many times a person has been thanked for a particular post.

It helps greatly to narrow down the really helpful posts from all the information it can get lost in. When you're searcing through
topics its a great way to cut to the chase. It also encourages those who have helped others.

I mostly give karma without posting to tell about it, I would imagine that its the norm I dont know where exactly where most of my karma came from. But it would be nice to see which posts were seen as most helpful.

Thanking on ppl's post is a good and motivating deed IMHO. For newbies the Karma
thing might sound a bit unfamiliar. I remember that I did not understand the Karma
thing in first.

Anyway, instead of writing KarmaUp/K++ or something like that, I like the way other forums like the mochigames forum is handling this. They have a special THANK YOU button at each posts (next to the QUOTE, MODIFY... buttons). So, if you like the post, you simply click on the THANK YOU button. If you have clicked on the thank you button, that specific post has a footer saying:

Quote
Normal post ... bla bla blub
-----
Thankful people: benny!, Shockwave, ...
-----

I do not know if that is possible with our forum software, but I really do like this way of saying thank you cos it makes the whole process more transparently. In addition you still have the ThankYou-Score-Count beneath your avatar.

Those are interesting responses and not the ones I expected to hear to be honest with you, but in a good way.

I can't remember why I didn't impliment the thank you system before but it realls does seem to be unanimous amongst the people who've replied.

There are definitely thank you mods available for SMF.. It will almost certainly mean another field in our database and thus make us even more incompatible than we are now but it is probably worth doing.

I like the way it is. Ok, some Karma points I haven't got the foggiest idea where they came from and why, but that doesn't matter. Someone liked what I wrote, did or shared and that's enough to know. Of course I'd like it better if they left a comment, but it's better than nothing. A "thank you" button wouldn't change much imho. You'd know who it was, but I think it would even more prevent people from actually posting something, just like that darn thumb up "like" stuff on facebook. Keep it as it is!
My 2 cents. Over and out. :)

Yup, I would give it a try if there is a proper ThankYou! plugin around. I do not know the plugin policy of SMF but maybe you find a solid one which also supports a clean de-install option. So, in case a lot of users do not like it we could remove it quite easily.

I would say let's try it but only if it does not cost you too much time. If I can help in any case, just let me know.

wise words... actually I can't remember exactly how I received my K+ but, as benny! said before: "I remember that I did not understand the Karma thing in first."
A "thank you" button seem a very useful... I've only a single concern about the "thank you" thing who can resemble the most popular "I Like It": I just hope this doesn't make it less meaningful as it is now.
BTW: changes are always welcome when making life easy!!! just remember the K.I.S.S. motto...

I don't really mind that karma thing, after all it's just some counter in some database.
Instead I prefer when people give some feedback. Something like "Hey, I tried your suggestion and it works fine" or even "Your crap didn't work for me, I solved it another way"...
