Title: iPad
Post by: zawran on May 24, 2011
So while waiting on getting a decent Android tablet I decided that I might as well try and see what all that iPad fuzz was all about, so I bought an iPad2 and just got it today. Do any of you guys have an iPad and if so what do you mainly use it for?

I will be using mine for testing my iPhone/iPad apps once I get as far as starting on making some for the apple products. At the moment I'm only working on Android apps since I can compile those on my PC. Eventually I will buy either a MacMini or a MacAir or something to that effect so that I can compile for that platform as well. I'm using Monkey where the code I make works on all platforms, so its just a matter of getting the hardware, which is expensive.

I'm thinking that I would be using it on the couch as well for playing games and surfing the web.

I'll like to know what you use yours for, if you have any that is. I know its a step towards the "evil enemy", but I'm going to try and make a little bit of cash of it so I think I'll be fine since I had a good motive for buying it. Besides if I don't like it anyways I can always sell it for 95% of the cost since Mac people seems to be paying top dollar for used equipment :)

lol ... that is exactly the story of mine. I like Android (have an Android mobile phone) and in general don't understand most of the Apple hype, their strict rules and closed technology. So, I studied the Android tablet market and was really disappointed to see that there are no good solutions yet. According to several reviews the Android3.0 OS is not really user friendly yet and suffers from poor performance (esp. the browser). Again, this knowledge is based on what I read in reviews. In addition, devices like Motorolas Xoom were comparably expensive compared to the Apple devices. That's why in the end, I also did buy an iPad2 (WiFi only).

I will be using mine for testing my iPhone/iPad apps once I get as far as starting on making some for the apple products. I'm using Monkey where the code I make works on all platforms, so its just a matter of getting the hardware, which is expensive.

I also want to run certain apps on the device. However, I am not into native app development - more stuff you can do using HTML5/Javascript/Flash. So, the OS did not really count - I just wanted the user experience when it comes to the size of the device as well as the touch controls.

I'm thinking that I would be using it on the couch as well for playing games and surfing the web.

That's currently the major situation I use it, too here ;-) Next to using it on my ride in the train to work.

Most of the time I use it for browsing the net, playing games and doing some business stuff (like MindMapping etc). As I said above, I use it indirectly for getting the user experience of having a pure mobile touch device and for testing some self-made apps on it.

All in all I have to say that the iPad2 is a nice gadget (concerning the hardware). The basic OS is really responsive, the browser feels extremely fast. What really annoys me is that I have to use iTunes to sync the device with certain data and that Flash is not supported on that device.

Besides if I don't like it anyways I can always sell it for 95% of the cost since Mac people seems to be paying top dollar for used equipment :)

That's exactly what I had in mind. Compared to other computer brands, whereever an apple is on it - the value of the hardware does definately not decrease as fast as any other device.

By the way, if someone reading this thread can recommend some iPad specific (HD) apps (games, multimedia, business,
lifestyle etc) - it is highly appreciated!

Thanks a lot mate. Some of them I already knew ... the others: Starfront, DeadSpace (Is it the orginal one from XBox? - cool), Dungeon Hunter 2, Air Attack, Galaxy On Fire 2 ( ELITE ), Dragon's Lair I will check out.

Btw...is there a service to stream videos/movies? Whenever I buy a video via iTunes, I have to wait until it is fully downloaded?

Thanks in advance!

best,
benny!

I use mine mainly for surfing the web and reading pdf magazines in bad. I didn't think I'd use it all that much before I got one but couldn't imagine being without one now.

I play the odd game now and again on it.  I've been really enjoying Crypto Families lately, it's worth checking out: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/crypto-families-hd/id386532458?mt=8 (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/crypto-families-hd/id386532458?mt=8).  It's a puzzle game where you need to crack codes using an Enigma machine to reveal words. Quite fun :)

I did manage to get some time to play with the ipad today. It seems quite snappy and doesn't really pause too much. A bit weird that you can only have one app shown on the screen at any given time. It makes it a bit more difficult to use it for more professional purposes like when you want to be able to view emails, calender, tweets and feeds at the same time. It seems like such a waste that you only have that one thing going. But so far the games have been fairly great and I have found a couple of productivity apps which I will be taking a close look into.

Yeah, I don't really consider it a productivity tool. Trying to do anything 'serious' on it get's quite frustrating, especially due to the awkward copy/paste system.  Typing anything of length on a virtual keyboard is a pain too :)

For me the main reason i bought one was i read a lot of books so it was better for me to have something like this just for that alone i have got about 100 books on it so mainly D&D books....

Oh and James Rollins, Dan Brown & John Connolly... :)

D&D ftw :D

Dont own an ipad, father got an android pad recently, given it was dirt cheap I expected it to be crap but it's actually pretty good, great for web browsing on the sofa or watching some youtube. Only down side is it doesnt seem very good for games, Angry birds wouldnt run properly, had sound but no picture, probably some lack of opengl es 2.0 support. It does what he wanted tho so guess the price was right :)

I LOVE my D & D books big time  :updance:

A sad fact i met Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman at a book signing at birmingham once years ago & took ALL my books for them to sign ( a bloody big bag full ) & they said i could only have a few signed...

I am still buying them now i have about 450 so that's why an iPad for me no more room .....

I have to say that I'm a little disappointed with the ipad, its alright for games, but I just haven't been able to find good productivity apps. I've decided to buy an Android tablet to see if that makes any difference. I've ordered an Asus Eee Pad Transformer. Not a great name for a tablet, but it has quite good specs for the money. I hope that it will be more useful than I've found the ipad to be. I'm not sure yet if I'll keep the ipad or sell it. I lend it to my brother so that he has something to play with. I don't play games all that much so I doubt that I'll be using the ipad too much.

They should be sending it on monday, so I'll have it early next week. I'll report back on my findings when I've had time to try it out for a few days.
