Title: [IMAGE PROCESSING] Snap 'n' Filter
Post by: combatking0 on July 22, 2011
I've been a bit short of time for this, otherwise I would have had this out a week ago and started a second entry.

After looking at the 2 entries which have been submitted before this one, I see I'm up against some stiff competition, but here is my attempt, and I hope it raises a few smiles.

I apologise for not making it in the classical demo style - I wasn't sure how it would work, but after seeing to examples and working on this, I think a second entry may cover this.

Now that the excuses are out of the way, I would like to introduce my entry, "Snap 'n' Filter", which allows you to take a picture from your webcam, or load an image from your hard disk, and play with it.

The effects can be stacked, for example, I used the "Live Mirror 1" and "Distort" buttons on the sample image, but there are some proper filters included too - please experiment with the program, and tell me what you think.

The program cannot save the images you edit with it, but if you have even basic image editing software, it should be possible to take a screen-shot of the program and cut and paste the output image from that.

I look forward to seeing more "proper" entries, and I hope you enjoy this one almost as much.

This is a nice little tool to play with. Well done! :) I have to admit I especially like the grinning mode filter in the left picture of the screenshot!  ;)

Two minor complaints: Would have been cool if you could load images from any folder and if webcam buttons were disabled when in "offline" mode and vice versa. I got a little confused in the beginning.

Edit: Ok, just read in the readme.txt, that it's not possible to load from any folder in Flash, didn't know that.

Nice! Fun to play with, but I agree with padman's complaints. Keep it up!

Awesome effects very interesting stuff for me as I am currently looking into dithering and colour quantization. A shame I don't have a webcam to test but thanks for including an option for loading files.

A good selection of filters there Combatking :)

My favourite is the 1 bitplane dither, it renders the image surprisingly well.

Thank you everyone. I apologise for not being able to get it to load images from outside its own directory - this is due to a security limitation of Flash Player being a Browser add-on.

It stops malicious web coders from making applications capable of reading a client's hard disk, but they didn't have something like this in mind when they made it.

I think you have made a great job here, I really enjoyed trying each effect.

Good stuff CombatKing  :)

It would be nice to have some adjustable parameters for the different effects and maybe some kind of morphing between the effects. I know that would probably eat a lot of ram though, especially if you generate the 'tween' images between the two effects.

You're right there, Raizor. A morphing effect would be nice, but Flash 8 runs so inefficiently that it would be very, very slow indeed.

It is nice to see that you didn't settle for just a single effect or two.
Looks like a few of them work in a similar way but many options there to play with. :)

Thanks Pixel_Outlaw, I knew I'd have trouble running this in realtime in Flash, so I decided to put more effort into the variety of effect options.

It doesn't work very well in my computer so i can't try all features. Some of the effects only affect at half of the picture but that is my own problem. This demo is really good if we are talking about effects, this is what I spect, the chance to apply some various effects and play whith it. I only miss one thing:The buttons must be ON/OFF cos' when you apply one effect, i will like to deselect that effect and try any other, but if you click one button, the effect is aplicated once more , over and over. Guess you don't have so much time to spend on menus and settings, so its a great demo. Good work

The buttons are intended to be single click to operate, but the effects do end up applying one after another, and there is no back button.

That's a good idea, thanks.
